How loud are the R9 270X and 280X in real world terms?

Thu Dec 19, 2013 8:08 pm

I've got to hand it to them, Techreport does a great job measuring the db level of all the graphics cards. They also note that these cards can get really loud; there is a mention of a power tool at one point. That seems really irritating to me, and might influence my choice of what card to get. So, does anyone have a good guide to how loud these cards are in real world terms (Ie, as loud as a blender, as a washing machine, as an idling car, etc). Also, how closely does the noise at the point they measure it compare to the noise outside a case and a little ways away, i.e. where my ears are. Pretty much the same, or is it muffled fairly well?

Put an MSI Gaming 2G R9 270X in my bros PC and it's pretty quiet. I think reviews show it pretty quiet and cool as well with the MSI twin frozr cooler.

The reference 290s are the ones you should really be worried about.

I have a couple of non-reference Gigabyte 280Xs. They are pretty quiet. I run them with no case. I can barely hear them over the air conditioning. In heavy load, it is like a car idling (still pretty quiet).

The reference 290 is more like a leaf blower in heavy load. The fan almost never hits 100% on its own though.

No info on the 270X.

I have a XFX 270x running GPU projects about 4 feet from me and I don't even know it is there. the MB and GPU are not even in a case. I think the power supply fan is louder than the GPU fans... and that is not loud at all either .... I had to literally put my ear right next to each of them to see which one was louder LOL

My 280x is quite....whisper quite. After a long gaming session the fans do kick up but it nowhere near handheld-vacuum volumes. Its still pretty quite.

Oh and for reference I have the Gigabyte R9 280x Rev 2

It depends on far too much; Room temperature, case-cooling, model of card, clockspeed, cooler type/quality/size.

I have heard a whisper-quiet 280X and a very noisy 7970 (basically the same thing)
I also own an inaudible 7870 and have come across a 270X that sounds like a hurricane under any load.

Generalising by GPU is utterly impossible, you have to narrow down your question/comparison to a specific model and revision (I have bought four cards of one type before to discover that an older revision on one of them had far more aggressive fan settings)

Thanks everyone! It sounds like I'm going to wait until the 280X is back in stock then look for a non-reference one with good reviews.

I have a HiS IceQ X2 Turbo Boost 280x in my PC and I never hear it over my CPU fan. To throw some more light onto it all...

Antec P180 Case
Top and Rear Exhaust are 120mm Antec TruQuiets
Front intake is also a 120mm Antec TruQuiet
Bottom center fan is a 120mm Antec TruQuiet
PSU is an Antec Earthwatts 650w with a single 120mm fan.
The only fan you actually hear in my case is the 120mm fan that came with my Cooler Master 212 Evo. Compared to all of my case fans, and the 2 fans on my GPU, this is always the one you hear.

Then again HiS have made their business based on cool and quiet.

Seconded - currently running 2x HIS IceQ 7970 with blowers and I think they're probably the quietest way to run crossfire in a smallish case (2x120 intakes, 1x120 exhaust)
