I know some other people complained that the low end Fermi cards were better because they had 128bit memory versus 64 bit, but out of the 730s, the GDDR5 should have a fair bit more memory bandwidth than the others, and at that price point, that's usually the problem? I have a GTX750 as well, it would be nice to know the relative performance down in the basement. It's easy to find this info once you get out of the low-end.

Should have grabbed a 750ti or a HD 7750 for the HTPC...least you can game on it if you want or game with a friend or family member in the same house..it is quite fun IMHO ...had a lot of friends bring PC's to my house for long gaming sessions.

I'm poor as hell, marital issues will do that. The main purpose was to obtain HDMI output. Since I'm also saddled with a older TV, even if I can try some games, I'm limited to 1360x768, so I got that going for me, which is nice.

I don't believe so - it's a custom form factor and I don't know that you'd be able to find anything that would fit in it. Possibly other Dell SFF power supplies, but I don't recall seeing any above 240W.

But what type of license do I need for the Optiplex 990 SFF, do I have to buy a Dell one? Or any Win 7 license will work? Also, if I buy a 32bit one, will I get the Win 10 64 bit upgrade?

I was going to suggest that of all of your options, the third is the best to me. Any version of Win7 will work, but I'd definitely recommend a 64-bit version, even if you're just sticking with Windows 7 for now. When you do the upgrade, Win7 Home will upgrade to regular Win10; Win7 Pro or Ultimate will upgrade to Win10 Pro, if that matters to you.

Also, Microsoft hasn't really put a time limit on the free Windows 10 Upgrade, and it's possible they will just make it a free upgrade indefinitely, but all we've heard so far about the free upgrade is that it would be "for a year", so if you're thinking of moving to Windows 10, I'd suggest doing it by next Spring.

Indeed! Those 128-bit DDR3 Fermi cards are actually significantly less capable than the GDDR5 ones. They've got 96 "cuda cores" capable of around 270GFLOPS, and 28GB/s of mem bandwidth, compared to the Kepler ones with 64-bit DDR5, which have 384 cuda cores capable of almost 700GFLOPS and 40GB/s of bandwidth. There's no real comparison.

As for benchmarks? If you're on Windows on that system, I'd suggest grabbing 3dmark. The free version has some tests which are perfectly suited to low end cards (Cloud Gate, which I used to get the numbers in the first post of this thread, and a few other scenes). You may also want to check out Unigine's benchmarks - you can run them in all sorts of resolutions and settings to test performance. They've pushed out four benchmarks now since their first one a ways back, each one more complex than the last, so they might help you gauge performance as well. The Unigine tests will also run on Linux if you're using that.

I tested my GT730 GDDR5 and got 11750 for the Graphics Score on CloudGate. The Physics score wasn't even in the ball park, but I tested on an ancient Core 2 system.

That sounds about right. I'd expect it be about half the speed of your GTX 750 in games - should be perfectly capable for 720p gaming at middling quality settings.

How about this card?
EVGA GeForce GT 740 02G-P4-3740-KR 2GB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 Low Profile Video Card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487096
Looks like it's single slot, and should be faster than a Geforce GTS 250, has 2GB GDDR5 on a 128-bit so the chip would be less bandwidth straved, 384 cores from the Kepler gen.
It would take you 2,363 continuous hours or 98 days,11 hours, and 35 minutes of gameplay to complete your Steam library.
In this time you could travel to Venus one time.

Thanks but do you think i can use "GTX 750 Ti N750ti-2GD5TLP 2GB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI " it has 640 CUDA Cores VS 384 cores for EVGA GeForce GT 740 02G-P4-3740-KR.

Does it mean it as 2x the power ???
Thanks

Looks like the heatsink sticks to far off the card to fit. You could try it but I say nope not going to happen.
That last picture at newegg showing what comes with the card, if you look at how high the heatsink is raised off the card.

Yeah, that GTX 750 Ti is a dual slot card, and that chassis needs a single slot one.

Either the GeForce GT 740 GDDR5 or the Radeon R7 250, these will be the best you can get from the 2 vendors right now to fit that build.

Also, the GTX 750 Ti is not twice the power of the GT 740 GDDR5, it actually uses a bit less

Thanks, I currently using the i5 igpu HD4600, so is the Jump up to GT 740 2GB worth the switch ?
and if i can wait for like 6 months, is there any better single slot card coming (e.g.750ti single slot card ?)

Yes, it should be worth it. However, 2 GB will be limiting in a year or 2.

I don't know if there's something better coming in the next 6 months, but I doubt it will be until the next process node.

From NVIDIA, the GM206 is too big and power hungry to be squeezed into a sub 75 W envelope low-profile single-slot design, and I see no incentive for a GM207 when GM107 is still selling. AMD can't afford new chip designs and already have Oland in the same space for the OEM Rx 300 series as in the retail Rx 200 series, so if there is a retail R7 350 it'll be just a rename and firmware tweak, a la Bonnaire to Tobago is my guess.

Rumors might be suggesting NVIDIA to be on 16 nm in Q1-Q2'16 and AMD to be on 14 nm in H2'16, I have no idea how accurate those are, or whether the big or little chips land first this time around, but the next generations will be a lot better for the same power draw than the current 28 nm designs.

Many MMORPGs are bottlenecked by CPU more than by GPU. There are simply too many objects to show. Clever DirectX 12 implementations could improve efficiency on that front, but it'll take quite a while for those to show up.

So , on my case, 16GB Mem, SSD, i5-4690 w/HD4600, to play Archeage , you think it is bottlenecked by CPU or GPU ? Thanks

The only other option you have is a new case to accommodate a two slot card, modify the case and try to fit it in on the top (above your cases single slot?) with one these:http://www.moddiy.com/products/PCI%252dExpress-PCI%252dE-Extension-Cable-Riser-%2819cm%29.html or last option is turn the dual slot card into a single slot like: http://www.overclock.net/t/1504887/true ... gtx-750-ti

Of course you are GPU-bound, you are not bottlenecked by that CPU in ArcheAge. You have all the CPU power you will need, and all the RAM too. Your storage is not a problem either.

I'd be somewhat surprised if you were CPU-bound in any games, MMORPG or not. I'd actually be surpised if pretty much any AMD A8 or A10 couldn't do better than gaming on that IGP. It is your weakest link.

Edit: supporting evidence I found (not that I think it's not obvious...) http://gamegpu.ru/mmorpg-/-onlayn-igry/ ... t-gpu.html
has some bar charts that are relevant, and says it's a CryEngine 3 game.

I would get the GeForce GT 740 because it has 2 GB of RAM, rather than the Radeon R7 250 with 1 GB.

I don't know their relative performance though, so if you can find any benchmarks comparing the 2 cards which show the Radeon beating the GeForce at your resolution by more than 10%, that might swing it back to the Radeon. If those benchmarks are of other CryEngine 3 games (e.g. the Crysis series) and on a good fast i5 or i7 quad core like yours then so much the better.

Edit2: http://uk.hardware.info/reviews/5446/7/ ... 080-medium
says the Haswell iGP is not so much for this engine.

Edit3: You can always just test if you are CPU- or GPU-bound: drop the resolution and all the graphical settings (in this case, from the Medium preset) to the lowest possible values, and if FPS goes up you were GPU-bound. Heck, you can go nuts and see what effect you get from weakening your CPU by disabling cores in the firmware: if the performance does not drop, your CPU is enough. Not that this is necessary, but it's how you'd work it out for yourself.

That's a good link. Near the bottom of the page, there's a small chart showing CPU scaling at 1920x1080 with a GeForce GTX780Ti. The Core i5-4670K provides similar performance as miniitxman's i5-4690, averaging 99 fps in that test, 180% as fast as the i3-2100.

Yes, it's just a shame it's all in Russian ;) Wasn't saying CPU didn't matter, just that the one miniitxman has is enough.

The memory scaling chart below, showing from minimum to maximum settings, is nice too, as is the one with RAM incrememts...

Unfortunately to get any of the available low profile GTX 750ti's that are not truly a single slot card you have to replace the 750ti's heatsink with a true single slot heatsink.

So far this EVGA gt 740 LP card seems to have the best true single slot LP heatsink that will fit onto a LP GTX 750ti here is the link to the 89$ card/heasink
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 00a1700053

The purchase the LP EVGA card of your liking and mount this cooler on it and then sell the gt740 or use it in a bigger rig or keep the gt740 as a backup card.
I also read the gt 740 is a 64 watt card and the 750ti is a 60 watt card but I have no proof to that.

Sure your spending $215 but you are getting 2 video cards. Also EVGA's single slot GT 740 cooler looks nice:)

Also would a 90 degree PCIE adapter help with your case...from a quick glance I do not think so.

I'm curious what we'll see out of the last few cards in the GeForce 900 series. Or if we'll see anything!

NVIDIA has a working low profile single-slot solution for GM107 in the Quadro K1200, but it's expensive ($300 ish) and I really can't recommend it if you're just gaming. It's quiet, though, and it works well.

I'm still holding out a little hope that there's a GeForce 940 in the plans and it will be basically a GeForce version of the Quadro K1200. That's really the last chance we have to see an improvement in performance in this form factor until the next generation GPUs launch.

Meantime, I think EVGA's 740 is a fine card, and if you can get it for a good price, would be a decent upgrade over the HD 4600 you're currently using. But it might be worth sticking it out just a little longer to see what comes of gthe GeForce 940. EVGA has a product category page for the 940 on their site (but no products) and at least one website is reporting specs similar to the K1200 and a release date of last week.

Whether or not that means anything is anyone's guess, but I'd like to think there will be an affordable single-slot low profile GM107 before end of year, and that would be a real step up from the current options.

Just verified the EVGA full sized 750ti is a 60 watt card according to the details on EVGA's site so that LP single slot cooler on EVGA's gt740 and its shiny copper is rated for 64 watts so you should have no throttling problems transplanting the lp single slot 740 cooler onto a LP 750ti.
2600k@4848mhz @1.4v CM Nepton40XL 16gb Ram 2x EVGA GTX770 4gb Classified cards in SLI@1280mhz Stock boost on a GAP67-UD4-B3, SBlaster Z powered by TX-850 PSU pushing a 34" LG 21/9 3440-1440 IPS panel. Pieced together 2.1 sound system

If you decide to buy both cards and switch the heatsinks around just remember you need to redo the thermal interface compound. This would work Arctic Silver CMQ2-2.7G Céramique 2 use it myself.
It would take you 2,363 continuous hours or 98 days,11 hours, and 35 minutes of gameplay to complete your Steam library.
In this time you could travel to Venus one time.

Too bad EVGA just does not make a true single slot low profile GTX 750 ti with that cooler on it they would sell a whole lot of them since they would fit in every premade slim tower, small form factor PC's made by the likes of Dell Acer Gateway etc the list goes on and on and they would be ideal for the slim Steam box. Anyway I think they would sell a ton of them.

I do not understand that every GPU manufacturer out MSI EVGA ASUS SAPPHIRE ZOTAC GALAX ETC, has not jumped on the 750Ti's Single slot Low Profile wagon since it is the best available for 1080p and can make most any PC into a fine 1080p gaming rig/Steambox. Are their design teams that lost that they can not see the profits since I do believe the low profile cards are actually cheaper to make since the circuit board is smaller but that is besides the point.

I like that , the sooner the better, is that 16nm or 28 nm ? even lower than 60w ? , the lower the TEMP. the smaller the fan that lead to more single slot card.

Well, if they take the design of the Quadro K1200 and make a regular GeForce version of it, it wouldn't be anything new - just another GM107-based card.

There's always the possibility that they update it to GM2xx, so the entire desktop 900 series is using the same generation of Maxwell, but I don't know how likely that is with them working on Pascal at this point.

Finding rumours about the low-end cards is always difficult - people flock to tech websites when there is new about the new high-end cards, but aren't nearly as interested when it comes to mainstream and low-end.

And yet the GTX 750 Ti is one of the best selling cards out there due to most prebuilts having low wattage PSUs with no PCIe power connecters, making this card a simple upgrade. Replacing a PSU is a PITA to do.
