Paint Shop Pro 8

Thu Nov 13, 2003 10:24 pm

I've been doing alot of drawing on my computer lately. It's fun and entertaining. What I'm wondering is if PSP8 is a big improvment over 7.

I'm using the demo of 8, and I might buy it. But I can find copies of version 7 somewhat cheaper I assume.

Anyone know?

Jasc® Paint Shop™ Pro® 8.0
Release Notes

New Feature Highlights

Paint Shop Pro 8 is the most complete software for easy-to-use professional digital imaging results. Combining a unique set of automatic and precision photo editing and graphic design tools with an integrated learning system, Paint Shop Pro 8 helps you deliver superior results with power and ease. It’s your complete solution for print and Web.

Automated Productivity Scripts™
Save time and eliminate repetitive work by recording and saving any series of editing steps or actions as a Script that you can apply to other images. Scripts can be set to run automatically on an image or you can activate them yourself. Apply scripts to multiple images at once with enhanced Batch Processing support. Scripts can be easily shared with other Paint Shop Pro 8 users. Edit saved scripts without rerecording all of your actions using the built-in Script Editor.

Image Editing and Compositing Tools
Use the Background Eraser to quickly remove background sections from photographs and cleanly place the remaining image on another background to create sophisticated compositions. Organize complex images with multiple layers and Layer Groups. Create and edit Mask Layers to reveal selected areas of an image. New selection options make it easy to enhance and smooth active selections, while Selection Edit mode allows users to create a selection on their image with brushes and other creative tools.

New Painting Engine
It’s easier than ever to paint and retouch images with Paint Shop Pro’s new painting engine, which gives you smoother control over brush strokes. Save custom brush tips to use with any brush tool or to share with others. Expanded brush variance options deliver more flexibility and artistry to your fingertips. Expanded support for digital tablets provides more control when using a stylus.

Image Deformation Tools
New deformation correction tools make it easy to adjust images that aren’t quite perfect. The new Straighten tool automatically fixes crooked images imported from scanners or cameras. Keystoning and other perspective errors can be fixed with the new Perspective Correction tool. Digital camera users can apply the Lens Correction filters to correct pincushion, fisheye and barrel distortion effects.

Integrated Learning Tools
The new, integrated Learning Center makes it easy to learn Paint Shop Pro 8 with step-by-step Quick Guide tutorials, links to Product Tour movies, and integrated Help topics.

Warping Tools
The new Warp Brush lets you paint distortions directly onto your images for fun, creative effects. The Mesh Warp tool alters an image by distorting a mesh laid on top of the image. Load and save deformation maps to easily apply warping effects to other images.

Web Page Backgrounds
Use the Seamless Tiling and Offset Effect filters to prepare high-quality seamless patterns and tiled images for use as Web page backgrounds.

New Filters and Effects
With Paint Shop Pro 8’s variety of new filters and effects, achieving stunning artistic results is easier thane ever. Smooth skin and produce romantic lighting effects with the Soft Focus filter. Add realistic bubbles with the Balls and Bubbles Effects filter. Use the Halftone filter to represent your image with dots. Simulate the placement of a glass lens on your image with the Magnifying Lens effect.

New File Format Support
Paint Shop Pro 8 has added support for over 15 new and enhanced file formats, including JPEG 2000, PDF, SVG, Postscript Level 3, and lossless JPEG. View and edit EXIF data such as exposure levels, shutter speed, date and time and many other details.

Dynamic Personalization™
Paint Shop Pro 8 delivers a new level of workflow flexibility and customization options. New palette docking options, custom toolbars and the ability to place any tool or command on any menu or toolbar in the program make it possible to tailor a work environment that is perfect for you. Save your changes as a custom workspace or choose from a variety of default workspaces for different workflow option.

Known Issues & Changes

The following are known issues or changes from previous versions of Paint Shop Pro that may affect your use of Paint Shop Pro 8:

  • Lines and preset shapes can appear excessively jagged when “anti-aliasing” is turned off and a small stroke width is selected.
  • The rendering of gradients used on text objects has changed from Paint Shop Pro 7. Previously gradients were applied separately to each character in a text string; in Paint Shop Pro 8, a gradient is applied across the entire text string. If you would like to render text as in Paint Shop Pro 7, select the text object then choose Convert Text to Curves>As Character Shapes.
  • If you use Animation Shop, you will be unable to export frames to Paint Shop Pro 8 and/or update them back to Animation Shop. Further, you will need to save layered files in the Paint Shop Pro 7-compatible format in order to open them in Animation Shop.
  • In order to better differentiate Paint Shop Pro files from similar file types used by other applications, we are now using long file type extensions, e.g. *.pspimage.
  • In the installation, Paint Shop Pro 8 created a folder called “My PSP8 Files” (by default in your ‘My Documents’ folder). This folder is used for any resources that you create or add to the program, e.g. tubes, brushes, gradients, patterns, textures, etc. To set additional file locations, go to the File menu and choose Preferences>File Locations.
  • Paint Shop Pro 8 introduces support for WIA (Windows Image Acquisition). As a result, support for some devices may be different than in previous versions of Paint Shop Pro.
  • Due to the size of the deformation map that must be saved in each Undo step, large amounts of RAM can be consumed when using the Warp brush or Mesh Warp tool. If you use these tools frequently on large images, we recommend increasing the size of your Undo limit. For better performance, you may also want to free up additional hard drive space and/or add RAM to your system.
  • Rapidly pressing the Backspace key multiple times when entering text may cause an error. We suggest pressing the Backspace key less rapidly and/or not holding the key down to delete text.

We hope to address many of these issues in future updates and appreciate your patience if these affect you in your work with the program.
