Adobe Acrobat X can it run in background?

Sun Aug 27, 2017 6:05 pm

So, I'm using Adobe Acrobat X to convert batches of excel spreadsheets into a single PDF. Running this is a bit slow and it opens one sheet at a time to get each image. So, you can't do anything else with the PC while this is going on. Is there a way to make this run in the background either in settings or with a newer version? The Excel is version 2003. I can't go to any higher version due to compatibility with needing to link instrument produced (very old Excel sheets) to make reports.

If you have an extra Windows license you could run it inside a VM.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Its such a slow process, maybe it should be used as a benchmark. :D  I get some speedup if I open Excel and then make the sheet just a few squares and then close Excel. Then when Acrobat opens the sheets it just opens a tiny sheet. I suppose displaying a spreadsheet is not an accelerated task for video cards. All the system drives are SSD's. However, I do have a directory on C mounted as a newtwork drive and I am running the job from the network drive files. I'll have to try doing it directly on the actual drive directory to see if its any faster.

Eh; 15 Excel files took 1min:50sec to compress on the native drive and 1min:53sec on the network drive. No real difference.

You could set the process priority to Below Normal- that way the OS gives other processes first dibs at CPU time, making your system a bit more usable.

If the original OP is still having an issue with slow AAX or for anyone else having a similar issue, this fix really helped me:

Uncheck these two options from Edit>>>Preferences>>>>General>>>
Uncheck Show online Storage when opening files and Show online storage when saving files.

It's a software issue. IIRC, any slightly older version of Acrobat is going to be almost entirely single-threaded. Moving to a newer version and/or trying something else (we use the paid version of Foxit PhantomPDF at work) could result in a substantial improvement. A different version of MS Office could also show an improvement (as I believe it's opening them directly in MS Office and then "printing" them).

afaik you don't need a license if you're running the VM inside the same machine/license
