Last Chrome version with h264 support?

Fri Nov 17, 2017 9:53 pm

I have three browsers with Adobe Flash or Shockwave installed, so now I need a browser with h264. A ton of Google research indicates that previous versions of Chrome had it, but its been either taken out or disabled in current version. Of course, not one of the sites reporting this bothered to mention which was the last version of Chrome with h264 support, but I believe the last non-beta/non-dev version was Chrome 8.0.552.224...can anyone here confirm this?

The current version of Chrome works with H264 just fine. I'm pretty sure because after using inspector on a couple of embedded videos and they are clearly H264 in .mp4.

Here's a site with H264, WebM and Ogg/Theora video embeds that you can use to test your browser compatibility:

The current version of Chrome is 62.0.3202.94 - it supports H.264.

Chrome 8.0.552.224 is from 2010.

For YouTube, use h264ify.

(Quite dumb forcing VP9 on GPUs that don't have hardware decoding for it. AKA, most of them.)
