Every so often (a couple of times a day, anyway) a small window will pop up and overlay a (320x240?) section of my browser, then disappear. This happens far to fast to capture, certainly less than a tenth of a second in duration. I don't know what it is and I'm concerned it's something not good.

Perhaps Windows already has a tool that will tell me what it is/was, but I'm only familiar with Task Manager. I need something that logs everything that is brought to the forefront and provides a method for me to query the properties of the executable.

Any tips?

That only shows you things which are explicitly logged though. I think he's looking for something to let him monitor all window open/close activity.

That is correct. Error logs are helpful, but a tool that simply shows what windows have been open/closed over x time will be much easier to sort through.

Having said that, this "information" entry is all over my logs:
DllHost (11700,G,0) The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency is enabled in ESENT due to the beta site mode settings 0x800000

Maybe I'll goof around with the event viewer tools and see if there's a link between my on-screen events and this logged item.

I used this little tool when I had similar issues with loss of window focus to pinpoint what caused it:

Keep it running in the background and it will print the active process name on a new line every time the focus changes.

There is also Process Explorer from MS which is like task manager on steroids so it might be helpful:

Not even kidding. Even though I'd disabled it long ago, it still pops up at 12:05 PM every day to tell me ... something. What it's trying to tell me is the next mystery to solve, I guess.

Oh I needed a tool like this a while back! I'm definitively keeping this in my tools folder!
