Microsoft kills HUP for Office 2019

Mon Aug 12, 2019 6:59 pm

Instead of paying $13 every four years or so, Microsoft has decided that I should pay four times that amount... every year.

I remember doing that back in the day. I sign up for the $99/year o365. I use it for both the office side of things, but also the 1 Terabyte of OneDrive as a second online backup for important files from my NAS.

I guess I will have to keep moving around this Office 2010 license until the end of time...

Subscription-based models have always been the golden goose that professional software vendors have been pushing for. The logistics for it with the majority of potential customers made it economically unfeasible until last decade. Retail software's days have been numbered.

Office 2013 for me, but I'm in the same boat. I have it installed on a Windows VM to help with migration, make it more accessible over the network.

I recently had a frustrated executive from a small non-profit describing how she wanted traditional install licenses for Office for new computers, and that they were only given the subscription option. I know "small non-profit" is not Microsoft's core market, but here was an officer trying to do the right thing and pay for her licenses, and being stymied.

One of the lesser-known benefits of Office 365 is that they offer email hosting for a very competitive price when bundled. My workplace will likely go to 365 from standalone 2013 when we upgrade from Server 2008R2/Windows 7 in the next couple months, but the savings from the current (lesser quality, more expensive) email hosting offsets all but about $15 per user per month. (At least that was my understanding when I looked at it; I'm not really the numbers guy). I believe it also comes with something like 1TB of online storage per 5 users, and is supposed to integrate well into W10.

In any case, for single users I would find it difficult to justify paying anything for Office for personal use, (as Libreoffice is more than adequate), let alone deal with subscription shenanigans.

The last version of Office I actually purchased was 2003...

Unless the latest version of LibreOffice has improved in the past three years, it cannot handle my more advanced Excel, Word and PowerPoint files without errors or formatting issues.

Yes, unfortunately this still seems to be the case. For basic stuff (which probably covers ~95% of home users) it's adequate. If you're doing fancy stuff and/or moving documents back and forth between LibreOffice and MS Office, it is problematic.

Speaking of Libreoffice, looks like there's a new article this morning....

Arstechnica - A Look At LibreOffice's new 6.3.0 "Fresh" Release

"The open source office suite LibreOffice released its version 6.3.0 last week. This was a major release that added many new features, as well as interoperability enhancements (read: better import and export of Microsoft Office documents) and performance increases."

Same here. One reason I don't upgrade to any further MS version is that I have to stay compatible with my old OS platforms. But I've not heard of any significant additional functionality of newer versions beyond silly feature creep.

The Fourier Transform feature looks interesting! I'm gonna give it a try.

Its been too many years since I needed to do an FFT. Those data sets are archived on MO disks. Besides, I only did FFT's to compare the results with the SVD principal components analysis I was doing back in the 1980's.

Edit: That and I also recall using an algorithm in Draper and Smith to compute a regression line by line so as to preserve accuracy when i was using a spreadsheet to calculate isotopic age dates. Its just exciting to see some more exciting math functions in a spreadsheet that is typically precision limited. Other than rolling your own of course, which is what I did in FORTRAN using (back then) freely available SVD codes.

I use some of the new functions almost daily. Specifically minifs and maxifs.

My favorite LibreOffice interoperability anecdote involved a large Excel file that was corrupted after a crash. Excel refused to do anything with it. LibreOffice was able to open the file, resave it in an Excel compatible format, and then Excel opened it again. I got everything back.

That was a few years ago, but it still amuses me.

Ya seen that through work, now a 365 subscription, no thanks. My office 2013 pro + isnt that great either, the windows lag when dragged around the screen among other things. I missed the 2016 pro + offer and got stuck with a copy of 2019 pro + which is better than the 365 subscription.

I will use that until whenever, then use ms office online or a free substitute, I rarely use office at home anymore now anyway. I'd pay for corel office before MS 365.

I hate subscriptions too, but this time around, I had to go with Office 365. HUP has limitations and is technically only available for a single computer.

Even two computers was enough to justify going the 365 route, and I don't use the mail or one drive features.

I use the drive as a tertiary backup destination for the Synology. 1TB can hold quite a bit of important documents/photos.

I also use Excel on mobile frequently enough. I just hit my annual renewal yesterday actually.

Barf...I might be on board if they included fancier software like Visio for those prices. But for the most part, all I need is Word and Excel at home (sometimes PowerPoint), so it looks like I'm out $150 the next time I need an Office license.

WTF is the difference between "Premium" and "Classic"?

I assume apps and services. "Classic" is limited to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. "Premium" adds Outlook, Publisher, Access, OneDrive, and Skype (wasn't that free?).
