I smell a story. Let's have it!

I smell a story. Let's have it!
It just seems like...
1. Every time I try to build someone else's code that uses it, there's a problem because they are assuming a newer version of Boost than what's in my distro's repository.
2. If I try to build Boost from current upstream source to fix issue #1, it is likely to fail because it's assuming a newer version of the C++ compiler than is in my distro's repository.
2a. The time I tried to fix #2 by installing a new upstream version of g++, it caused a subsequent Nvidia GPU driver installation (several months down the road) to fail because the version I installed did not support the Spectre/Meltdown mitigations required to rebuild Nvidia's driver shim.
3. Even if #2 is successful, the application I was trying to build often STILL doesn't build correctly (the errors are just different).
4. If I try to use Boost in my own code, I end up confused more often than not. If you do something wrong, the error you get from the compiler is very cryptic, and involves multiple levels of template instantiation, making it very difficult to figure out why things went off the rails.
