Ok, on the CPU use thing, we have identified a problem with the NewEgg 120x600 ad and have requested a fix. That should rectify that problem.

As for crashes, do they persist? From what I gather, the problem only comes with the magical combination of Firefox, the AdBlock extension, and the Flash extension. Right? And only on the main page of the site, and only intermittently there? Please confirm all of this, and I'll see what I can do to isolate the problem.

Oh, and forgive me for dragging my feet on this. I've been terribly busy, and frankly, for a while I thought the problem only affected people blocking our ads. I would pay to purchase a tool that would crash the browsers of those people, so you can see my lack of motivation. ;)

i'm using firefox 1.0 and TR is the only site that crashes it. I had adblock installed on a previous version but deleted it and installed 1.0 fresh..

the flash stuff will load but it will crash before i see any of the main text on the page.

I've actually not had any problems with the newest version of firefox. It appears to have gone away, at least for now.

I've been having a lot of issues with the scroll wheel not working on TR lately, assumed it was something with the install since I did a clean install a week or so ago, but I guess not

Cool. Thanks for looking into that.

I wonder if the other crashes could be related?

Unlikely, JBI. The offending Newegg is the 120x600 that doesn't show up on the main page.

Hmm...

I'm positive I've seen the "CPU usage pegs and browser acts weird until you hit reload" issue on the main page in the past (like, last week). Though it doesn't seem to be happening today.

Ahh, you must not use XP. It wants to tell Microsoft about every program that crashes.

My crashes didn't involve Adblock - I only had a flash blocker installed. I gave up the flashblock... Was too tired of restarting Firefox to get to read TR :)

I think you're right about the ad only crashing people trying to block it, my firefox only started crashing when i tried to install the flashblock extension (and that was a last resort due to the 100% cpu utilization and thrashing it was causing my HD)

I won't be blocking the ads anymore, but right now I am still getting the high cpu utilization even on this page :S (there's a VIA EPIA Ad and the newegg thanksgiving one at the top), i would submit a screen but i dont have anywhere to host it :S

Speaking of the Newegg... why are they still running day-after-Thanksgiving ads anyway?

I've been a longtime reader of TR and user of firefox... joined forums to reply to this thread. With FF 1.0PR I had consistent crashes (with flashblock installed). Updated to latest flash version as well as flashblock, still crashed maybe 6/10 times. Uninstalled flashblock and the crashing stopped, but still (currently) have high cpu utilization. Will report more details when I have time to reproduce the problem detail by detail, but too bad, I really liked flashblock. Also have anecdotal evidence that flashblock causes instability with other sites as well, but I have only experienced it with TR.

I think I have narrowed down the CPU usage issue a bit.

If I have multiple TR pages open in Mozilla, and two (or more) of the pages happen to have the Crucial Ballistix flash ad on them at the same time, the CPU utilization pegs, the mouse scrollwheel stops working, and the browser becomes unusably sluggish.

In general, the netshelter flash ads seem to be CPU pigs... but the Ballistix one appears to be the worst by far.

I didn't have the crash problem until I installed flashblock. Coincidence?

Looong time reader of the main page, just registered in the forum to post a reply here. Techreport is generally the second site I hit after I boot my computer (the first is google which is my homepage). Keep up the good work.

Anyway, on to my experience with this problem: I have Firefox 1.0 with flashblock and I get these crashes all the time. The only other extensions I have installed are nuke anything and ieview. The crashing has been going on for quite some time now but I won't be removing flashblock any time soon - it really makes browsing much more pleasant.

I have resorted to opening the front page using IE :(
