best freeware media player?

Sat Mar 25, 2006 1:33 pm

I'm an avid fan of BSPlayer and have using it for a few years now cuz of its great subtitle support and skins but recently they put adware into their free version. What kind of media players does everyone use? I can't stand WMP cuz it sux. Guess I could go back to divx player like I did before BS...

Why does it, as you say "sux"?

doesn't support all my media correctly, Alt-Enter for full screen?? Ctrl-P for pause??? Also eat a lot of resources, etc. I know they're little things that I personally find annoying but if I can get a better, free player, why not?

I'm a big fan of WMP Classic. It's a no-frills player, and supports a large majority of codecs right off the bat.

I'd go so far as to say I love it.

Lately I've moved back to WMP. I had been using Winamp, but the latest version would just randomly stop playing and the player would crash, but I love how you create playlists in Winamp however.

Hmm, need to check out Bsplayer.

VLC isn't too bad. Media Player Classic is also pretty good with ACE Mega Codecs pack.

I find myself using WMP more and more often as well. I used to use Winamp - but it was having problems with large playlists, and the media library wasn't very good (and tended to crash).

For audio I use MediaMonkey - nice media library, easy to organize, and doesn't mind large playlists.

For .rm I use MPC, and for some formats I use VLC. Usually WMP has no problems playing things, as long as you have the right codecs.

I use Media Player Classic for all my video files, - I like that it is very light weight, and doesn't have a bloated interface; I use Winamp for music.

Zoomplayer for movies.
Foobar2000 for audio.

bsplayer is pretty nice as well for movies. Just remember that the free versions of zoomplayer and bsplayer do not support encoded wmv/dvd's

I use an earlier version of BSPlayer. (1.02) Haven't found anything better. It's got:

- fantastic mousewheel support for volume control & resizing the window
- super thin window borders
- very low CPU/mem usage
- the great Organica II skin (only 42K): http://www.bsplayer.org/index.php?p=ski ... ail&id=364

And real media. Media Player Classic will handle that too.

BTW Alt-Enter seems pretty common for fullscreen, although I do get annoyed with Ctrl-P for pause from time to time.

Foobar for audio files plays just about everything you throw at it, including the audio from .mp4 files (you can rip it directly to WAV files, which is a nifty feature)

Between VLC and MPC, I haven't found any videos that I can't play.

Media Player Classic + [url=http://hellninjacommando.com/defilerpak/]DefilerPak + Quicktime Alternative + Real Alternative for video. Covers just about anything. VLC for backup.

Also: if you have a DX9 compliant video card, MPC let's you write and use pixel shaders. Fun.

Winamp for music. It's media library is also pretty good.

It's funny that I possess cybernetic affinity like I have a CYB stat of 5 and my Psychogenic Cyber Affinity psi power is active, yet I can't for the life of me, figure out WMP's "user-friendly" interface.
