How to censor movies quickly??

Sun Jul 08, 2007 2:32 am

I want to censor some part of a movie so that I can see it comfortably with my parents.

I know it can be done with adobe premiere but It will take a lot of time to re-encode the movie which I do not want to do.

I want an easy alternative like.
show blank screen for a specific given time,
or skip the movie automatically from a given frame to a given frame.

do any of the media players have these features??
I have windows and ubuntu both.
how do I do it please help.

simply cutting out the section of the movie you dont want shouldnt be reason for it to encode. but i must admit that im more curious in what movie you would watch that you couldnt watch with your parents in its normal format

with what soft do I cut It without re-encoding??

there are movies with a very good story, performances, cinematography
but contain some frontal nudity which is uncomfortable for me to watch with my parents like.

300, amelie, babel, children of men, lives of the others

I don't get being uncomfortable about nudity. Your parents are naked when they take their clothes off y'know.

Charming.

Let me put it this way. Would you find it uncomfortable to view something like Michelangelo's David in front of your parents? If so then I'd say that you're seriously, unhealthily repressed.

Oh please. Its a discussion forum, and frankly discussing what you want to cut and why is more interesting than discussing something you could have answered yourself with two seconds work in front of google.

Haha. I personally would suck it up and forget about it. Sure, its not completely comfortable to view nudity with your parents, but it's not exactly a big deal. How old are you if you don't mind me asking? I believe this is something that you'll get over when you grow up. :)

Cut parts of the movie? What happened to the good old next scene button?

Hey guys lets not fight ! There are many questions posed on TR before an easy google search was performed but we shouldn't fight about it ! and TR is definitely NOT doomed; this forum is one of the most mature and stable ones I've seen.

You could maybe try and find a program that has a 'skip 30 seconds' kind of fast-forward. That might change things.

I can completely agree with the OP. There are many movies that I think are great movies (300 is a good example) that I know my parents (mom especially) wouldn't watch because they are turned off by the language/gratuitous violence/nudity. Normally I just don't watch the movies with them

I think that Severus could have used a little more tact in asking his question if he really wanted an answer to it (which I doubt).

I'm naked under my clothing, too. Nobody needs to see that.

Here's the easiest way to handle this situation, and it doesn't involve video editing.

Jot down some notes on a piece of paper that tell you when in the movie that these scenes will start and end.

When you get to those scenes, simply get up and leave the room and allow your parents to continue watching the movie un-interrupted. In your notes also include the amount of time that you should wait before you come back into the room (since you won't be able to see the counter on the DVD player).

You can always fast forward the scenes in question. Sly Ferrett's solution is nice too.

And to the others, I dunno which country the OP is from but watching a sexual scene or one contain nudity is one thing I can't do. It makes my parents uncomfortable and that in turn makes me uncomfortable.

In my experience, if there's a movie that I really like and want others to see, I don't watch it with them (nudity or not). If I watch with them I end up distracted thinking "do they think this is as awesome as I do?" and I don't enjoy it nearly as much as when I watched by myself. It's easier to have them watch it by themselves and then we can discuss it afterwards.

I know this isn't 100% on topic, but it's also not 100% off topic...

My family was watching "Something's gotta give" last holiday season.

In that movie, Diane Keaton is nude in one scene. My mother made a comment about how few women still look good enough to do that at 57 years old, and my dad joked that he had missed it.

The next thing I knew... My wife was not only reversing the DVD to replay the scene, but actually, to my horror paused the DVD player so that we could all appreciate what my mother was talking about.

To make it worse, we weren't only watching this movie with my parents, but with my GRANDPARENTS as well!! My younger sister gave me a look from across the room, as she was in as much disbelief as I was at what was happening.

We were all laughing so hard at the situation that we didn't have time to think about how uncomfortable it might have been.

It was pretty weird.

There's a program called Virtualdub (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/virt ... 1_4_10.zip) wich is great for the thing you describe. You need to download the Region remove filter (http://www.digtv.ws/files/?GetFile=/fil ... e-v1.1.zip) to do this.

How to use: Extract the Region remove filter into the plugins folder in Virtualdub. Start Virtualdub - Open the file - go to video/filters - add - region remove - use the show preview button to get the best result - when done press ok - ok again - go to video and choose direct stream copy - go to File/save as avi. The area is now blurred :)

I found this suggestion by doing a quick google, I saw a couple of other apps referenced as possibilties for censoring. LSmaker and Adobe Premiere (premiere looked like it would be the easiest, but its not freeware like the other two). You'll probably want to find more recent versions of the software mentioned in the above passage as Nektons post was from 2002. You should be able to find the files by googling for virtualdub and regionremove. Hopefully that gives you something to look into. There are also quite a few VirtualDub tutorials to be found if you have the time to do a little digging, it doesn't take too much to get your head around though.

And I agree with others, let's not criticize someones reasons for asking a question. Please be more open minded because not everyone has the same background as you, what might seem normal to you may be contentious for someone else because of their culture or for personal reasons. His question was reasonable, hence should be dignified with reasonable answers.

My dvd player has a restriction feature whereby only certain titles play depending on a number rating or something. I'm not sure but i think it can skip certain scenes of movies that you may not want children -or adults- seeing through markers that are placed in the video files. I might be remembering incorrectly though cus i've never used the feature...

You're not acting out the movie, you're viewing it. There's a pretty huge difference...

This thread should be locked immediately. Copying movies onto your computer so that you can edit them and re-burn them violates the DMCA. I'm not a fan of the DMCA, but if anyone here happens to mention a program to do what the OP wants, we're all skunked.

Didn't Richard Gere get arrested for kissing an actress on the cheek on live TV in India?

I can sympathize with the OP. It's odd to watch racy things in front of certain people. If it wasn't illegal to edit them out of movies, I'm sure there'd be an industry in this country for 'G' versions of many films.

There are several products that to that, some are set top box type things, where you insert the dvd and then it downloads the times to remove and such.

You can dynamically cut elicit content, but it's still there, right on the disc. People might feel more comfortable knowing that they're purchasing a Puritan disc.

If that's how you feel, you're perfectly welcome to shut up and get out. Please don't let the door hit you in the buns on your way out.

Also, I'd say more people here could answer your question than any place short of doom9. Try your attitude there and the ban stick will escort you out. Here, we just get a little testy.

I think they sell those as well, although I am sure they are all from the producers and therefore "official".

I'm 32 and personally find it a little uncomfortable when scenes with nudity come up in movies that I'm watching with my parents. For some reason people are generally taught to be ashamed of nudity and once learned is very difficult to unlearn.

There are movies such as Amelie, Better Than Chocolate, etc that are great movies but that I'd never watch with my parents. I don't believe my parents would respect the artistic value of those movies as much as I do. Maybe I'm not giving them enough credit but there are topics in those movies that I just don't feel comfortable discussing with my parents. I have enough difference in belief with my parents already.
