I would guess this is Chrome's "predict network actions to improve page load performance". I believe that with a Google search, for example, Chrome preloads the top three or so search results since it figures you're going to click on one or more of them anyway.

You can disable this in Chrome's settings. It'd be great if you turned it off and posted another comparison image.

and Bingo was his name-o. Looks like that setting is the cause.
They should just rename that setting "Send a bunch of data to advertising partners to make us some $$" so that we can easily tell if it should be on or off.

With the setting turned off, it behaves much like Chrome with adblock installed (for the search).

Interesting. I imagine it would also be desirable to disable that feature if you're on a slower connection, to reduce network traffic.

I think it's more along the lines of fetching ads from the sites it's precaching, than sending data to their own advertising partners.

Anything to discredit Google, huh?

I mean, I'm not a huge giant fan of the company myself, or anything, but why would you jump to adware and implications of wrongdoing when there's a simpler -- and less evil -- solution?

There's a certain amount of truth. A lot of times the omnibox auto completes my search into something that is clearly sponsored, and it's super annoying.

Really? I can't recall that having ever happened to me, but I don't use Chrome all that much.

I don't even use Google all that much anymore; I'm really sick of their continual downgrades in search functionality. The removal of the + operator (or, reassignment for Google+) was the last straw for me.

I don't think I've ever seen a sponsored result from the Omnibox...and I've been using Chrome since day-1 release along with being logged in to my Google profile as soon as it was offered.

"spirit" as a standard Google search returns Spirit Airlines as the top result...

I may be the odd one out, but I stopped using Google some time ago. I use https://duckduckgo.com now. I just want to mention it, from one geek to another, in case you are not familiar with it.

There have been a number of problems with Omnibox searches in the last few builds, since Google is extending the Instant search API (note small s in search. Instant Search is a different thing. Bad naming.), and further integrating the new extended Instant into the Omnibox. It'll get better if we give it some time, and there are various hacks and workarounds to get the old Omnibox search behavior back in the meantime. I personally have a few bugs open with the Chrome team for this and related issues.
