NFL 2017

Wed Aug 30, 2017 9:57 am

Final preseason games played tomorrow, so let's get this started again.

Week 1

Thursday Night Football/Season Opener, 9/7
Kansas City Chiefs at New England Patriots

Sunday 9/10
New York Jets at Buffalo Bills
Philadelphia Eagles at Washington Redskins
"Oakland" Raiders at Tennessee Titans
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Miami Dolphins - GAME MOVED TO WEEK 11
Jacksonville Jaguars at Houston Texans
Arizona Cardinals at Detroit Lions
Atlanta Falcons at Chicago Bears
Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals
Pittsburgh Steelers at Cleveland Browns
Indianapolis Colts at Los Angeles Rams
Seattle Seahawks at Green Bay Packers
Carolina Panthers at San Francisco 49ers

Sunday Night Football
New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys

Monday Night Football 9/11
New Orleans Saints at Minnesota Vikings
Los Angeles Chargers at Denver Broncos

Okay, it feels weird having two teams moving between seasons (effectively). I am going to maintain the "Oakland" convention until they finally make it to Vegas.

Few updates worth mentioning...

First, The Dolphins/Buccaneers game has officially been pulled from Miami due to hurricane Irma. They will either play in a neutral location (Jacksonville may or may not be too close), or they will reschedule.

Second, Brock Osweiler has returned to the Denver Broncos for a small salary (possibly League minimum?) and a second string position. I a guessing that his new contract was served with a slice of humble pie. This, IMO, is a very interesting move that might make the Broncos a potent contender in the AFC West.

Finally, while the nation is still cleaning up from hurricane Harvey, J.J. Watt has now raised $20 million in relief.

EDIT: The Dolphins/Bucs game has officially been moved to week 11. Both teams will be playing 16 straight games.

Now it's $28 mil...I have a ton of respect for J.J. Watt. I'd love for him to come play for the Colts

I think the Raiders are just going to be better with a stronger run game, the Browns will still be in rebuild mode, and the Broncos will be better supported by a solid backup QB (who could finally develop into a true starter).

The Cowboys should still be okay, but their opponents have better film on Dak Prescott now, and things will be worse if Elliot sits for a few games. I won't write them out of the NFC East, but I think they'll have to fight hard to win it.

Both teams did. Part of it is probably the reluctance to play starters much (and QBs hardly at all) during the preseason. A lot of rust to shake off, it seems.

But that punch call in the 2Q was BS, didn't even call the blatant facemask, instead a phantom punch. Took a TD off the board and changed the whole game.

I thought both teams looked good in the first half...on defense. And that's really good for Packers fans, since they generally have a top tier offense, especially in the winter.

As for the alleged punch, 1) My guess is that it will be reviewed and the league will have to issue some sort of apology, 2) we don't have the exact view of what the official saw. My guess is that it looked like a punch from one angle and, since the officiating crew have a zero-tolerance policy, out he went. If the league instituted an official replay review for some penalties, I would definitely support it.

Sunday Night Football

Monday Night Football, 9/18
Detroit Lions at New York Giants

I think Browns/Ravens will be closer than people expect, but I'll still take the Ravens in that one. I'll also take the upset in Atlanta. Green Bay's defense looks better this year, and this should be the first real challenge for the Falcons coming off their Super Bowl loss.

Week 3

Thursday Night Football, 9/21
Los Angeles Rams at San Francisco 49ers

Sunday, 9/24
Baltimore Ravens vs. Jacksonville Jaguars in London

Cleveland Browns at Indianapolis Colts
New York Giants at Philadelphia Eagles
Miami Dolphins at New York Jets
Denver Broncos at Buffalo Bills
New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers
Pittsburgh Steelers at Chicago Bears
Atlanta Falcons at Detroit Lions
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Minnesota Vikings
Houston Texans at New England Patriots

Cincinnati Bengals at Green Bay Packers
Kansas City Chiefs at Los Angeles Chargers

Sunday Night Football
"Oakland" Raiders at Washington Redskins

Monday Night Football, 9/25
Dallas Cowboys at Arizona Cardinals

I think there are many lopsided matchups this week. The Raiders/Redskins in Prime time might be a surprise, but I think the Raiders are the better team, and they'll have plenty of time to rest after their cross-country flight. There's also a good possibility that Denver exposed the weak spots in the Cowboys' offense, and it will be interesting to see if the Cardinals' defense can shut it down.

Week 5

Thursday Night Football, 10/5

Sunday, 10/8

Carolina Panthers at Detroit Lions
Sand Francisco 49ers at Indianapolis Colts
Tennessee Titans at Miami Dolphins

Baltimore Ravens at "Oakland" Raiders
Green Bay Packers at Dallas Cowboys

Sunday Night Football
Kansas City Chiefs at Houston Texans

Monday Night Football, 10/9
Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears

So the first few weeks of the season have been...weird. For example, the Bills are on top of the AFC East, while the Patriots are tied with the Jets (the JETS). I don't have a lot of picks this week because I think there are a lot of close and/or potentially surprising matchups. It also doesn't help that there are so many 2-2 teams, and I hesitate to make much out of 3-win teams like the Panthers, Bills, Steelers, and Rams. This stretch of the season could get weird, and we'll probably see plenty of hype about those aforementioned teams before they collapse around week 10 or 11.

Odell Beckham Jr. will have "season ending surgery" as the Giants fall to 0-5, and I think that should be the cue to scrap the season. Manning will need a replacement soon, so here is their chance to draft a QB and prep for the future.

It wasn't just Beckham's broken ankle. The Giants also lost wide receivers Brandon Marshall, Sterling Shepard and Dwayne Harris to injury in the same game. The only healthy wide receiver left on the Giants' roster is Roger Lewis.

I'm astounded that the Jets, who tossed away all of their veteran talent this season in order to tank for a high draft pick for a new quarterback are now tied for the AFC East lead at 3-2. The Giants, a team that many pundits picked for the Super Bowl, are down at 0-5 along with the hapless Browns and 49ers.

Yeah, the complete depletion at WR makes the Giants the worst 0-5 team. The 49ers and Browns have shown some promise, but we expect those teams to struggle during their rebuild process. As for the Jets, they have a rough schedule coming up. They have all of the NFC South, New England x2, AND KC and Denver. IOW...they still have time to ruin their record

So after Week 5, we have three winless teams--Browns, 49ers, and Giants. For some fun, who do you think will be the first and last to win a game? Note that the Giants and 49ers do meet in Week 10 in San Francisco.

Also for fun, who do you think will beat the currently undefeated Chiefs?

For the winless trio, I think the Browns are the first to win with more opportunities, and the Giants will be the last. The Chiefs have the toughest schedule in the toughest division, so their first loss is most likely to happen in Week 7 or 8 (pending Carr's injury). If they get to the Bye undefeated, though, then they could stay that way into Week 15 or 16, racking their first loss when resting starters.

The Packers do have some struggles, but they seem very dangerous this season. They always get good in December, but if they roll strong into the mid season, they will be in excellent shape.

The troubles for the Giants continue with a suspension of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. It seems that things are going to get worse before they get better

I have no idea how the AFC will shake out, but it could very well be the Steelers, Chiefs, or Patriots. Or Steelers, Jaguars, Titans. Or the Bills. Or....

NFC looks like it could come down to the Eagles, Seahawks, Vikings, or Rams. No clue what will happen in the AFC or NFC South. Lots of flux. If the Eagles and Seahawks can get their O-Lines in order (Philly just lost their LT for the year.

It may just all come down to who is healthiest. Sorry, Green Bay. And NYG.

Yeah, things are messy at the moment. Lots of surprises and some terrible injuries messing everything up. When it comes to Super Bowl contenders...

Legit: Patriots, Steelers, Dolphins, Eagles

Conditional: Broncos (offensive scoring), Chiefs (home field), Cowboys (must win division), Falcons (get your **** together), Seahawks (also get your **** together), Packers (miracles happen, right?)

Pretenders/Playoff Losers: AFC South, Rams, Vikings, Lions

2018 Draft Winners: Colts, Browns, 49ers, Giants

EDIT: forgot to mention... #FIREPAGANO

The Browns and 49ers are still looking for their first wins of the season. On that note, these are the only teams that my Colts have defeated this year.

Jimmy Garopplo has been traded to the 49ers for a 2nd round draft pick. I think the 49ers got robbed.

At first, it seems solid for the 49ers (getting a semi-refined QB) and foolish by the Patriots (for surrendering the heir apparent). However, Garoppolo only has 8 games left on his contract. The 49ers could use a franchise tag to keep him, but that could get pricey, and the San Francisco O-line is pretty bad, which will tarnish any QB's performance.

Then we get to New England. The 49ers are going to be no better than 8-8 (probably much worse), so that draft pick will be solid. Additionally, they will also be able to pursue Goroppolo in Free Agency after getting an immediate benefit to their 2017 salary cap. It won't seem so wise if Brady gets injured in the next 8 games, but otherwise, I think New England is getting the most out of this.

OK, we all know that the Cleveland Browns are bad on the field. We have now learned that the rot goes all the way to the front office:

When you can't even get a trade notice to the NFL office on time, that's a sign that it's time to fire everyone and start over.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.
