A Red Bull 1-2?? Hamilton's engine strategy literally going up in smoke??

I love it.

Go Nico.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Nico was quietly impressive today - spun by Vettel and dropped to the back of the field, worked his way through without any physical safety cars to bunch the pack up, and negated the 10s penalty with a 13s gap.

I felt his overtake of Kimi wasn't the cleanest, but didn't see anything wrong with it. At most, I'd have expected a few grumbles from Kimi in the post-race interviews, but not a penalty, and particularly not a 10s one. What irked me even more what that a safety-related penalty for speeding in the pitlane resulted in only a 5s penalty for Ocon, but an overtake like this (where Kimi suffered no debilitating damage, nor was he punted out of the race) resulted in a heavy-handed penalty.

Inconsistent stewarding continues to be a bane of F1.

Although I'm not supporting Hamilton, I feel for him, this was quite a random and cruel stroke of luck.

Re: Formula 1 2016

Was a pretty good race by recent F1 standards and Suzuka is one of my favorite tracks.  Love those fast esses and narrow track without tons of tarmac runoff area.  Funny how the drivers don't go over the white lines when there is grass or gravel huh?   :P  I can't see how Rosberg is going to lose the championship now.  It would take a Rosberg DNF and Hamilton winning every race (assuming Rosberg comes 2nd).  Crazier things have happened of course (like the 2007 Alonso/Hamilton/Mclaren 3 race meltdown), but it seems highly unlikely.

I just really hope next year there is more than 1 team capable of winning races on a regular basis.  Mercedes domination is boring.  I think they are going the wrong way by adding more complex aero next year which will inevitably be sensitive to "dirty air", but it would at least be better if more than one team can challenge for the championship.  I'd prefer simpler aero and more power, but sadly F1 seems to always do the opposite of what would make it better.

Re: Formula 1 2016

Rosberg has a 33 point lead with four races to go.  Points awarded for 1st through 10th places are: 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1.
If Hamilton wins all four remaining races (4x25 = 100 points), then Rosberg needs three seconds and a third to win the championship.  The fact that the gap is larger than 4x(25-18) = 28 points means that the driver's championship is Rosberg's to lose rather than Hamilton's to win.

What would level out the field would be for Formula 1 to stop tinkering with the rules and just stick to one formula for a while.  Each time that the rules are changed, the team with six to ten times the budget and personnel gets more development done in less time so that they gain a major advantage.  If the people running the sport weren't so flighty and just stuck with the same formula, the smaller teams would get closer over time.  The heavily funded team would still be ahead, but the gap would narrow as the designs got closer to optimum.  Look at how much more competitive the Manor team is this year than last as an example.  They're still the slowest, but they've gone from seven seconds back to just two to three seconds back.  If the sport stuck to the same formula for another two years, Manor would be within one second of the fastest team and would be finishing races on the same lap as the leader.

Hamilton has never won at Interlagos either, and often even struggles to beat his teammates (he has yet to beat Rosberg there in the same car).

There's also been a lot of chatter about Ross Brawn getting a role in F1 to setup the rules. That would be fantastic, far better than Bernie tossing out silly ideas all over the place that get implemented without being thought through and then rejected (double points, qualifying changes, etc, etc).

The 2016 Formula 1 drivers championship comes down to the last race between the two Mercedes drivers.  With just a 12 point lead, this table summarizes what Nico Rosberg must do to win his first championship.
HAM - ROS
1st   -   3rd or better
2nd  -   6th or better
3rd   -  8th or better
4th   - 10th or better
5th  -  ----

So, who will be assigned to take out Rosberg at the first corner?

C'mon, it's not like Bernie Ecclestone is even trying to be impartial here.

Did Keke steal Bernie's girl back in the day or something? What's the beef with Bernie against Nico?

Looks like Max may eventually achieve what his dad did not achieve during his career and could become the real "boss" if the stars align for him. I like what Max has done so far in his early F1 career.

So basically as we've thought all along it will take a Rosberg crash or mechanical DNF to lose the championship.  Not impossible of course, but in a "normal" race there is just no way Rosberg is going to finish lower than 3rd (or even 2nd).  I don't think there is much chance of rain in Abu Dhabi either.   :P

I said it's "not impossible"   Just unlikely that's all (and the bookies agree).  Finishing lower than 3rd has only happened to Nico 5 times also and...

-One of those five times was when Lewis and Nico crashed into each other (which would hand Nico the championship at this point)

-Another one was a wet (Monaco) race.  The last race is in Abu Dhabi which gets virtually no rain.

-Another crash in Austria between them, which could have easily ended both their races if the contact was more extreme (and why would Nico fight this hard when he only needs 2nd/3rd in Abu Dhabi?)

-A penalty in Germany for forcing a driver off the track. Again he's probably less likely to do this with the championship at stake when he only needs to finish 3rd or better.

Finishing 3rd is assuming Hamilton is leading in the first place too, and with how many bad starts he has had this season that is far from inevitable.

Congrats to Nico and Hamilton is a whinging pussy who refused to run at his full pace because doing so suited his objective. I would have taken him out at the first turn. F1 has had enough prima donnas in its past and it would do well to shuck them off.

Bloody wanker thinks he should get the trophy at the start of the season and not even have to run the races. Put him in a start&park NASCAR ride for a couple of years to teach him some humility. The aura of noblesse oblige that just drips from him makes one want to punch him square in his face.

I've got to disagree with you there Ned.

Full credit to Rosberg, that was an incredibly tough season and he has often been under rated as a driver in the past, but he has finally won the World Championship he richly deserved.

Hamilton is a racer. He broke no racing rules and did everything he could to win the championship. We've seen other championships settled by cars deliberately hitting each other. I know Hamilton couldn't do that or he would lose, but I don't think he would have done that, and nothing that he did do got anywhere close to that.

We got a thrilling final race. If Hamilton had put his foot to the floor and vanished off in to the distance with Rosberg chasing after him, that race would have been a snooze fest.

Rosberg retires! Wow, that's a shock but I can see his point of view. That's also a nice juicy seat going free for next year, does Wehrlein have enough experience for it or do they look elsewhere?

Wow.  31 years old and burned out on the sport... What will he find to occupy the rest of his life?

It certainly throws the silly season wide open again.  There are plenty of talented drivers who would love to have the overwhelming performance advantage of driving the Mercedes, even if it meant putting up with Lewis Hamilton as a frenemy.

Would you want to spend another 20+ race season with a little ballerina? Seems that Sir Jackie agrees with my assessment.
