Looking more closely at the qualifying times, we see that the gaps from 1st through 5th are about 0.4 seconds per position, with Verstappen (in 5th) 1.59 seconds behind Hamilton's pole time of 83.84 seconds. From 5th through 13th is much tighter, with Button only 0.87 seconds behind Verstappen's 85.43 second lap time. There's a 0.96 second gap from Button in 13th to Palmer in 14th. 14th through 19th are relatively close, with Grosjean 1.08 seconds behind Palmer's time of 87.24 seconds. Guiterrez, Haryanto and Wehrlein bring up the rear with nearly-identical times of 89.61, 89.63 and 89.64 seconds - 1.3 seconds slower than Grosjean.

Hamilton's pole time was 5.8 seconds per lap faster than the three slowest qualifiers.

1 Mercedes were sand bagging during winter testing.

2 The new qualifying format sucks. There was nothing wrong with the old format, it was probably the one bit of F1 that was working. Still Bernie is a very smart cookie and now has everyone talking about qualifying and not about how the money is (not) shared around.

still haven't seen the race (watching it in 1 hour), but from the lap times JAE posted it seems Kimi had a really good lap time among those who didnt finish. Hopefully less breaking stuff next race :D

I think Alonso was very very lucky. That car almost hit the fence driver head first and he would be dead. Maybe the halo device would help protect the drivers in that scenario?

I know people are worried about how fast he would have been able to get out if he had a halo on the car, but as Jenson Button pointed out afterwards, there was no reason for Fernando to get out quickly. They don't get fires after crashes in F1, just while driving along like Kimi did.

Wow. Haas starts with a 6th and improves to a 5th in their second race. Outstanding.

I still lament the loss of F1FRL.com. That was fun.

EDIT: The FIA site used to show a graphical chart where one could trace a driver from their starting position to their finishing position. They don't do it any more, not least that I can find.

Qualifying still sucks and the answer from the Powers That Be is to offer and even suckier aggregated time thing. F1 tried it in the past and it didn't last because it was universally hated. This means the vote will not pass, which means we will still have this stupid clock watching system in place in China. Everyone wants the old system back, but they deliberately do not offer that on the vote.

I know it's all a political power play, but can't they all go and scream "Mine!" in a school yard somewhere like a bunch of 5 year olds and leave the racing alone for us that want to watch it?

James Allen usually posts one as part of his analysis but it's based on lap time so very busy.

I cannot wait to hear the tirades from Lewis as he demands that the team slow Nico down so that he can retake the place he arrogates for himself.

I love it. Looks like Lewis has a bit of the Johnny Manziel in him. Learn quick and become an acolyte of F1 like Alain Prost or you're toast.

EDIT: Is it not obvious that I despise Lewis Hamilton and his prissy demands that the team ensure he always has the better car?

Kvyat earned himself no friends among the Tifosi with his turn 1 antics.

I didn't understand Hamilton's taking five stops in the first 30 laps (of 56). His teammate cruised through the race with only two stops in total.

For Hamilton stops were: 1) New front wing after 1st turn crash; 2) Behind safety car put on Super Soft; 3) One lap later replace Super Soft with Softs so they could run Softs to the end with plan for 2 more stops like Rosberg. The problem was the soft wasn't lasting so they had to switch to the Medium, which meant the SS fandango was for nothing.

I wouldn't be to sure about the Tifosi reaction to Kvyat, they appreciate bravery and there was a gap that Kvyat went for. As far as I'm aware he didn't actually touch Vettel, that accident was really just the two Ferraris tripping over each other. Vettel had to blame someone else as Sergio Marchionne was there watching and before the race had put the team on notice that he expected race wins. That's going to be a pretty uncomfortable debrief in the red team garage.

The soft tires lasted just fine for Rosberg driving an identically-prepared Mercedes. Was Hamilton so inept that he wore them out in half the number of laps that Nico managed?

Lots more braking in the pack than out in front? Rosberg had a reputation last year for being easier on the tyres as well didn't he?

At least this GP mixed the tables up a bit. What happened to Haas? I was on the verge of being a true believer...

Grosjean spent a long time in the pits after getting caught up in some of the stupidity in turn 1. I don't believe that they ever got the car right after putting the new wing on it.

Hamilton had a lot of damage to the front underside when the wing went underneath. That meant that the front slid more and wore the tyres out more.

It's interesting that for a team so publicly condemning of the lack of power provided by their Renault engine, Ricciardo's Red Bull has been consistently fast so far this season.
