Re: Formula 1 2016

Ricciardo's team cost him the race when they inexplicably had no tires ready to put onto his car when he pitted on lap 32, stretching a typical 2½ second pit stop into more than 13 seconds and allowing Hamilton to pass.

Results from Monte Carlo:
1 Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes, 77.9s
2 Daniel Ricciardo, Red Bull / (Renault) 78.3s
3 Sergio Perez, Force India / Mercedes 78.4s 8)

5 Fernando Alonso, McLaren / Honda 79.2s :)
6 Nico Hulkenberg, Force India / Mercedes 79.2s
7 Nico Rosberg, Mercedes 78.8s :-?

10 Felipe Massa, Williams / Mercedes 79.2s
11 Esteban Gutiérrez, Haas / Ferrari 79.1s
12 Valtteri Bottas, Williams / Mercedes 79.2s - 10s penalty for hitting Gutiérrez cost him a spot
13 Romain Grosjean, Haas / Ferrari 80.2s - Grosjean was an innocent victim of Raikkonen's craash
14 Pascal Wehrlein, Manor / Mercedes 80.4s - 20s of penalties for ignoring blue flags and speeding under virtual safety car cost him a spot

Yep it seems Hamilton has managed to transfer his bad luck to Ricciardo somehow. He should have 2 race wins in a row now, but instead he has a 4th and 2nd place.

Which I, some 90 miles south, am currently experiencing.

If one really wants to see the Grand Prix du Montréal, one had best be in Montréal at least a week before the event. Montréal is a damn difficult city for drivers as it is and GP week only triples the mess. Its combination of one-way streets and universal bannage of "right on red" makes getting anywhere a pain.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

They're quite proud to be "North America's most European city."

In the pre quail show Brundle suggested that teams should be stripped of points instead of drivers going to the back of the grid. I agree. Why should drivers bear any penalties for mechanical failures?

That would be terrible for the smaller teams though, and a slap on the wrist for Mercedes.

Given a choice between losing their hard-earned 6 points, a team like Renault would probably opt to retire for the rest of the season rather than serve that penalty.

The thing is, Mercedes did use their wealth to take advantage of the rules.  They swapped engines in Hamilton's W07 three times this weekend to pile up the penalties at one time so that they would have some spare engine components available to use during the remainder of the season without penalty.  Someone like Sauber or Manor probably doesn't have tens of millions of dollars worth of engines available to use for this sort of contingency.

Re: Formula 1 2016

I actually preferred the rule that converted unused grid penalties into a race penalty, and wish they hadn't done away with it.

Either that, or they should "tag" grid drops to the components in question. So if Hamilton has taken on 10 new components this weekend, each of them get tagged with 5 grid drops, for a total of 50 (yes, I'm ignoring the 10 place grid drop on the first component for simplicity). Now, since he's only going to use 5 of those components, this weekend his maximum logical grid drop will be 25 positions. There again, since he can't drop more than 21 places, the unused 4 or more grid drops are "remembered" against specific components. Then, every subsequent race where those components are used, the grid drops are applied until all grid drops are used up. If a component's grid drop isn't used, it is "remembered" against that component for the next race.

There are a few loose ends that need tying up (defining an order of components, doing away with the 'first component gets 10 grid places drop' rule, what about end of the season) but otherwise I see this as a reasonably workable approach. Its no more complex than the other complex rules we have in other parts of F1.

EDIT: I just read that Alonso gets a new PU, thus taking his penalty total to 60 grid places, beating Hamilton with 55. So, net result is that he's dropped just 1 grid slot for an entirely new PU. It just goes to show - once again - how this system favours the richer teams.

I disagree with extending penalties into the next race though. Even without intending any trickery an engine might blow up during the race itself, not being able to finish the race is enough of a penalty without taking an extra 20 place grid penalty on the next one.

My idea is if a driver has more grid penalties than there are cars behind him, delay his start by x number of seconds. Lewis's 55 place drop can be served by him dropping 20 places back, and then starting 35 seconds after the rest of the pack. It'll be a massive amount of time to make up and IMO represents the remainder of his penalty well enough.

Your idea was how it was implemented last year, but I don't remember why it was scrapped. I'd be happy with even that implementation, rather than what we have today.

The reason I prefer extending penalties into subsequent races is this - to ensure that the benefit of a new PU across multiple races is offset by penalties. Here's a hypothetical example - consider a team like Red Bull last year. They might opt to take significant penalties on a power circuit (e.g. Monza) and be hit with penalties limited to that race - and if those penalties are significant enough they may just choose to complete the race at a lower power setting to save the new engine (or even retire on some pretext); but then carry forward an advantage of a new engine to a track that benefits them - say Singapore. It probably comes down to whether teams might be willing to write off one race to get a benefit for a subsequent one.

While that was a nice race, particularly with Hamilton and Alonso able to make their way forward very impressively, I came away disappointed.

If only we'd had a nice and open fight - with Nico, Verstappen, Räikkönen, Vettel and Ricciardo all slugging it out on such a beautiful track, it would have been great. Even if Nico had run away, we could have had fun with the other four. Instead, Vettel mucks things up for three of them and we were left with a case of "what might have been". I am a Vettel fan, but his driving this year hasn't been as hot as previously (letting aside team error and mechanical failures). Coming to another driver I like, Verstappen's defence might be legal, but it left me with a bad taste in my mouth. In contrast, Perez's overtake of Massa showed how racing can be aggressive yet respectful.

Hamilton must be celebrating - between his podium and the fact that he has 3 new power units, this has been a near-perfect weekend for him.
