Race in Belgium won by a German, when the crowd favorite (Verstappen, who while racing as Dutch was born in Belgium) came in 11th.

I was surprised that his blocking of Kimi's overtake wasn't even brought up for investigation, and then set aside. I'm not sure why Charlie didn't see the need to flag that to the stewards. Unless Ferrari didn't raise a complaint, but then, there's no reason for them not to.

That event proved that the cockpit communications that are sent over the live F1 feed aren't on a 7-second bleep delay. Kimi may be Finnish, but he has complete command of the ugly Anglo-Saxon parts of English.

As for Verstappen's defense being "legal", that seems to change from week to week depending on the Stewards. I'm not a fan of the nannying that usually goes on penalty wise but it was odd that they didn't even investigate one of the half dozen incidents during the race. I don't see how what Verstappen did into Les Combes (hitting another car forcing him off the track, and not even making the corner himself he was so determined to do it) is better than what Rosberg has done earlier in the season, yet Rosberg got 2 penalties. I was amazed they didn't investigate the Alonso unsafe release either.
Whether they are going to hand out penalties or not there just needs to be some consistency, but I think you'd get more consistency if you rolled some dice and let that decide who gets a penalty.

If I ignore the teams, I'd have put the blame for the turn 1 incident at Spa as 50-50 between Vettel and Verstappen for executing a pincer move on Kimi. But when I then consider the teams, I'd say the balance shifts to 75% Vettel's fault, simply because he was compromising his teammate with such an aggressive turn-in. If Verstappen wasn't there to cause a collision, Vettel's move would have still forced Kimi to alter (and thereby compromise) the line he was taking. That was what particularly annoyed me, the fact that he was pulling this move on a teammate (and the fact that it was Kimi at the receiving end). I do hope that Arrivabene has the cojones to talk to Vettel about this behaviour.

And good memory on your part to recall that incident from 2014! I read somewhere - and have to agree - that Vettel's 2016 is shaping out to be like 2014.

Very true - I'd like to see consistency first and foremost, followed by lesser nannying. I like the idea of changing the stewards for each race, but have them use the same rules and the same yardstick.

Especially when uttered at Monza. Face it; Benz sells far more cars over which to amortize F1 expenses.

That said, Ferrari has been in the wilderness before. I first really picked up on F1 around 1985 or so when I moved to my current area of residence. Back in the younger days there was a hard core of a dozen of us who would make arrangements for a local bar to let us in early on Sunday and watch the race while imbibing. Back then it was all Williams vs. McLaren, Mansell/Piquet vs. Senna/Prost, with Benetton always lurking to pick up scraps. Ferrari wasn't ever a factor with Michele Alboreto and the #2 of the week. Met some really good friends in that stretch, all of whom are now lost to fading memories.

I've been following F1 since the mid 80's so I've only seen the Schumacher era of Ferrari domination. It was 16 year prior to that era that Ferrari won the constructors title so perhaps 2024 is their year.

Schumi didn't move to Ferrari until 1996. They won a Constructors in 1983 but they were nowhere on the grid until Schumi came over. The stock Ferrari car numbers in that period were 27 and 28, and they weren't far wrong.

Its Honda's first fastest lap in 24 years, not McLaren's. I'm sure McLaren has had its fair share of fastest laps when powered by Mercedes in the last decade or so.
Even if McLaren were shooting for a hollow record by putting on new tires on nearly empty tanks, its still quite neat that McLaren achieved this at Monza of all tracks. After all the excuses of 2015, its good to see them moving up into the midfield.

Ferrari's decision to go for a two-stopper was a safe strategy to defend against Bottas and the Red Bulls, but it turned the race into an utter snoozefest. I wonder if Ferrari should have split their strategies and one-stopped one of their drivers - it wouldn't have kept Hamilton at bay, but it would have at least provided some excitement.

Both Haas cars were quicker than the McLarens in qualifying. Grosjean was moved back 5 places on the grid for changing a gearbox.

Gros jean was quicker in qualifying. His Haas was moved back 5 places on the grid for changing a gearbox.

So the first year team potentially could have been 5 places ahead in the race. McLaren is still in serious trouble.

Perhaps Button sees that and is not prepared to just go round and round. With his new deal he can come back in 2018 after Alonso leaves with the hope that Honda finally delivers a power unit that is competitive.

It sounds Liberty Media could potentially improve things. I mean, the last few years haven't been great, so they don't have a high bar to clear. Unfortunately the deal doesn't get rid of Ecclestone.

In the long term, even the worst case scenario (F1 running itself into the red and/or the ground) isn't so bad. Remember the whole CART/IRL saga? It took less than ten years for that mess to get sorted out, and the series is reasonably healthy today. F1 will never be unsalvageable, the concept and brand will always have value. It just might have a long recovery time if things continue the way they are.

I presumably still have a few decades left. I can wait
