Well that was quite a game. I think Denver will be fine this year as long as they take care of Siemian. The kid has enough calm and sense to handle the offense, and the defense is still in good form.

The Panthers are in good shape, too. If that game were played in Carolina, I think they easily take the win.

Tampa Bay at Atlanta

Chicago at Houston
Green Bay at Jacksonville (Green Bay is just a better team. The only hiccup could be the heat in Florida.)
San Diego at Kansas City (KC is probably the best team in the AFC West--pending Denver's QB development--and they're playing at home.)
Oakland at New Orleans
Cincinnati at New York Jets (Close, but I think Cincinnati is a better seasoned team.)
Cleveland at Philadelphia
Minnesota at Tennessee (Sam Bradford is not the QB answer for Minnesota. Tennessee is getting better. I think they exploit a couple mistakes and win their opener.)
Miami at Seattle (Seattle really good. Miami...not so much. AND it's in Seattle.)
New York Giants at Dallas (Dallas doesn't have Romo. They don't play well without Romo.)
Detroit at Indianapolis (Colts have Andrew Luck back, and they're opening at home. It will be loud in Indy.)

Sunday Night Football:
New England at Arizona

Monday Night Football::
Pittsburgh at Washington (Washington only won the NFC East because someone had to, and Pittsburgh has all their weapons back.)
Los Angeles at San Francisco (San Francisco is in another transition year, and the Rams have a habit of upsetting the NFC West.)

I'm not much for betting, but here are the teams I'd pick to win. With a little bit of reasoning.

The interesting games to watch are Chicago vs. Houston and New England vs. Arizona. I think the Bears will continue to improve under John Fox. They won't take the risks needed to win the division (or a playoff game), but they'll continue to improve. Houston is definitely going to be a threat with a decent QB. I think both teams are headed for #2 in their divisions, so it should be a decent matchup.

Now as for the Sunday night game...New England should be really good, but there are some problems. Arizona is really well coached, they're playing IN Arizona, and Tom Brady is suspended. Then again, Belichick is a shrewed coach, and Tom Brady is aging. Garoppollo could be a surprise breakout destined to take Tommy's spot, but we won't know until we see them play. I've got no love for New England, but the game should be good.

Definitely a brutal game last night :)

I'm still trying to figure out why Cam wasn't taken out on the last drive for concussion protocol testing... And pretty bad officiating which is par for the course I suppose..

I think Denver has the potential to be even better this year than last year.  Manning was great, but he also had some serious mobility problems, and problems passing deep.  And frankly I think there was a tendency to overemphasize the passing game.  I think that as long as Siemian can be a consistent game manager, and they put a little more on the running game, they're going to be tough to beat.

Oakland at New Orleans
Cincinnati at New York Jets
Cleveland at Philadelphia
Minnesota at Tennessee
Miami at Seattle
New York Giants at Dallas

Atlanta, I don't think the Bucs will do all that much this year.
Smart money is on Baltimore but I don't think it will be an easy win.
Houston, not even close.
Every week there are one or 2 upsets that few see coming, I think the Jags will send the Packers packing.
Kansas City, in an easy win.
The Saints will come marching in.
The Jets will ignite their afterburners.
I think the Browns will make cheesesteak out of Philly.
Vikings, 'nuff said.
Another game that has all the makings of an upset, 'Hawks are a 10 point favorite, jump all over that line and take the 'Fins, I think Seattle wins but by less than a field goal.
If the Giants can't beat a Dallas team with no Romo then it will be a very long season for them, Giants convincingly.
Indy, in a shootout.
Arizona, in what is bound to be an overhyped win.
Steelers fan here but I think the 'Skins take it.
Rams, in a game that shows they are ready to take the next step.

Update for day game scores:

San Diego 27 at Kansas City 33
Oakland 35 at New Orleans 34
Cincinnati 23 at New York Jets 22
Cleveland 10 at Philadelphia 29
Minnesota 25 at Tennessee 16
Miami 10 at Seattle 12
New York Giants 20 at Dallas 19
Detroit 39 at Indianapolis 35

Watched GB win, and it pretty much lined up with my prediction. Give the Packers a more comfortable day and they take an easy win. At the same time, the Jaguars do look a lot cleaner than they have. They're definitely a developing team.

I also watched my Colts just... ::sigh:: I feel like it's a defensive coordination problem. That game was plagued with self-inflicted injuries and missed tackles. Simple stuff that you'd think we'd have figured out in Pagano's fifth year.

I'll have to watch some highlights, but the scores show some other interesting stories.

Post-Highlights edit: Alright, the AFC West is pretty wide open. San Diego showed that they could do a lot, but they also showed that they could blow a huge lead. The Chiefs showed that they could let themselves fall behind and still get up. Long term that isn't a good strategy. I think Denver could exploit that kind of play easily. Now the Saints are known to give up a lot of points, but Del Rio's decision to go for the 2-point win makes them a wild card that no one should underestimate.

Minnesota will probably not look as good in coming weeks. Tennessee made a lot of offensive mistakes resulting in defensive points, and I think they're going to need to score some offensive touchdowns to win anything in their division. Miami looked way better than I expected, particularly on defense. I think they could shake up the AFC East. The NFC East should be interesting. The Browns aren't a great team (ever), but The Eagles showed promise, the Giants look okay, and the Cowboys would probably roll over everyone if they could start a healthy Romo.

Probably shouldn't draw too many conclusions from week 1, but the 49ers and Rams both surprised me. Not a good sign for Jeff Fishers's future in the NFL, but perhaps a good sign that Chip Kelly can coach a football team (just don't give him too much control over personnel).

Week 2

Thursday
New York Jets at Buffalo

Sunday
San Francisco at Carolina
Dallas at Washington
Cincinnati at Pittsburgh
New Orleans at New York Giants
Miami at New England
Kansas City at Houston
Tennessee at Detroit
Baltimore at Cleveland
Seattle at Los Angeles
Tampa Bay at Arizona
Jacksonville at San Diego

Indianapolis at Denver

Sunday Night Football
Green Bay at Minnesota

Monday Night Football
Philadelphia at Chicago

It's going to be a depressing day for my Colts in Denver...

I'm specifically looking at Seattle. I have a feeling that they are going to struggle a lot without a potent running threat. Their inability to score many points will definitely haunt them in games to come. I am also genuinely surprised by Sam Bradford. He might struggle without his running threat, but then again, maybe he won't.

Week 3

Thursday
Houston at New England

Sunday
Arizona at Buffalo
Oakland at Tennessee

Conventional wisdom tells me to pick Seattle at home, but like I said, their inability to score points could haunt them, especially when San Francisco has stepped up on defense. I think the 49ers take it.

The good game of the week should (hopefully) be Minnesota at Carolina. The Panthers are still really good, but the Vikings show that they have some strength. I think the Panthers take it in a close game.

Honestly...I kind of want my Colts to lose many of their upcoming games. It's clear that they've got management problems, and we need to lose Pagano and Grigson to fix them.

The Broncos are acting like a team ready to return to the Super Bowl, and I would not be surprised if they did. As long as they don't get tripped up by KC or Oakland in divisional games, they're an easy 1st or 2nd seed in the AFC.

It's also worth pointing out that (pending Cam Newton's recovery) Carolina is probably not as bad as their 1-3 record implies. They lost 2 games last season to the Broncos and the Falcons. This season, they've lost 2 games to the Broncos and the Falcons, plus one more to the Vikings, who are a good team. 1-3 still isn't good, but I don't think it's indicative of major problems with the team. As long as Cam is healthy, I think they can bounce back and make the playoffs.

Not making a lot of picks this week because I think there could be a lot of close games. I think the games to watch are Broncos/Chargers (divisional prime time game), Ravens/Giants (to see which team overcomes their early problems), Cowboys/Packers (two good NFC teams), Falcons/Seahawks (couple of strong division contenders), and Colts/Texans (where we'll probably figure out who is destined to win the AFC South).

Not great QB news for Pittsburgh and Chicago. Pittsburgh could have had a good run. Chicago's defense looked solid tonight, but that isn't going to help too much if they can't put points on the board.

Can we take a moment to talk about color rush uniforms? I thought (or assumed) that the point was to sell more jerseys, but some of these choices are just a waste. Tonight, for example, they put the Packers in white jerseys and pants, even though they already wear white on the road, they wear green at home (GREEN Bay), and their alternate jersey is navy. I don't see any point in picking up a white color rush jersey. Had they slapped on a yellow jersey, it might have looked silly on the field, but I guarantee that they'd be able to sell them to fans.

The best color rush jersey--from a sales perspective--is obviously Seattle's neon green. Will also look silly during the game, but I guarantee you'll see neon in the stands.

Adam Vinateri sets the record for number of successful field goals in a row at 43 years young. Not as glamorous as a QB or receiver's career, but you have to respect that kind of skill and consistency.

Speaking of kickers, I'm seeing Hauschka and Catanzaro getting some grief for missing field goals (allowing that game to end in a tie), and that's nonsense. Neither Seattle nor Arizona were able to score a touchdown, so all 12 points were scored by these guys (including field goals to keep OT going). Those guys did their job. If you don't want to see kickers, then complain about the offenses.

Okay, My Colts continue to disappoint and the Packers need to get their act together on defense. The Raiders continue to impress. Lots of penalty mistakes, but they've clearly got the ability to overcome, and they could take the AFC west if Denver loses a couple more games.

Week 9

Thursday Night Football
Atlanta at Tampa Bay

Sunday
Detroit at Minnesota
Philadelphia at New York Giants
New York Jets at Miami
Jacksonville at Kansas City
Dallas at Cleveland
Pittsburgh at Baltimore
New Orleans at San Francisco
Carolina at Los Angeles
Indianapolis at Green Bay
Tennessee at San Diego

Sunday Night Football
Denver at Oakland

Monday Night Football
Buffalo at Seattle

Divisional games usually defy expectations. The best teams tend to have at least one divisional loss in them (example: Carolina's only regular season loss was to Atlanta), so I expect the games in Oakland, Baltimore, and The Meadowlands to be intense, and hopefully the best games of the week.

OTOH, I think Atlanta and Minnesota have must-win division games. Atlanta started strong last year but lost several in a row, so they need to prove that they deserve the division title. With Green Bay only a game behind, the Vikings need to capitalize on their home field advantage to stay ahead.

For other games, I really like the Packers and Colts...I think Indy's incompetent defense gives up at least 30 points. I would not be surprised if they give up 40. The city of Cleveland might be able to claim two title teams by Thursday, but Dallas is going to wreck the poor Browns. Rex Ryan's Bills look interesting, but Seattle is one of the hardest places to win if you aren't the Seahawks.

Last thought: is anyone here really upset by ties?

The Browns are a perfect 0-9, but they're technically still alive for the playoffs.

Top teams have only 4 wins, plus the Bengals at 3 wins and 1 tie...yup. And actually, looking at their schedule, they have divisional games (where teams are more likely to pull off upsets), plus the Giants, Bills, and Chargers. Heck, if the rest of the AFC North stays mediocre, a Browns playoff appearance seems pretty plausible.

...just highly unlikely.

Well the Colts somewhat surprised me. The Packers didn't look great, though, so they shouldn't rest too easy. Maybe they've got a chance at winning the AFC South, though. The Raiders might be the real deal, too. I still think the Broncos are good, too, but Oakland might be the best team in the AFC West.

Time to get politics off the brain and enjoy some football!

Week 10

Thursday Night Football
Cleveland at Baltimore

Sunday
Houston at Jacksonville
Denver at New Orleans
Los Angeles at New York Jets
Atlanta at Philadelphia
Kansas City at Carolina
Chicago at Tampa Bay
Minnesota at Washington
Green Bay at Tennessee
Miami at San Diego
San Francisco at Arizona
Dallas at Pittsburgh

Lots of games that should be good this week like Falcons/Eagles, Dolphins/Buccaneers, Cowboys/Steelers, and Seahawks/Patriots. I think the Saints are going to outscore the Broncos, though. Unless that defense can turn up points of their own, their offense just won't be able to keep up with Drew Brees.

The risky pick I'm taking is Ravens over Browns. I do think that the Browns will notch a win this year, and a divisional matchup is a prime chance for that to happen.
