Nobody deserved to break the futility record more than Jeff Fisher, but now—after getting his golden parachute—he won't get to.

nobody wants the "losing-est coach ever" title, including Stan Kroenke, I'm sure.

Edit: According to St. Louis TV, Kevin Demoff (Rams COO) is the son of Fisher's agent, Marvin Demoff. So there's plenty of intrigue and conspiracy talk in the Rams' old stomping grounds.

Game night! Seattle get to show off the best color rush jerseys and Los Angeles play without Jeff Fisher...that's still funny to me

Week 15

Thursday Night Football
Los Angeles at Seattle

Saturday
Miami at New York Jets

Sunday
Green Bay at Chicago
Cleveland at Buffalo
Philadelphia at Baltimore
Tennessee at Kansas City
Pittsburgh at Cincinnati
Detroit at New York Giants
Indianapolis at Minnesota
Jacksonville at Houston
New Orleans at Arizona
San Francisco at Atlanta
Oakland at San Diego
New England at Denver

Sunday Night Football
Tampa Bay at Dallas

Monday Might Football
Carolina at Washington

Three games and zero byes for all teams left. Some intense games are coming down the stretch. I think the best games will be Lions/Giants, Patriots/Broncos, and Buccaneers/Cowboys.

With a Thursday night drubbing of the pathetic Rams, the 9-4-1 Seattle Seahawks clinched the NFL's weakest division.  Pete Carroll gets no style points for trying to run up the score against the lowly Rams.

The New England Patriots (12-2) clinched the AFC East title and a first round bye.  The Oakland Raiders (11-3) clinched a playoff spot.

Some close ones, some surprises. One big story ought to be Brock Osweiler getting benched early. Tom Savage, who has a GREAT name, by the way, rallied to lead the Texans to a victory. Not great for my Colts, but a big laugh for me while the Texans continue to be the weakest division leader in the NFL.

Speaking of expensive QBs, I don't think Sam Bradford is the problem in Minnesota. He isn't helping them, obviously, but their main deficiencies are on their O-line and defense. They might be hurting for draft picks after giving two to Philadelphia.

Big loss in Kansas City today. Since Oakland won in San Diego, they are a full game ahead of the Chiefs now. Winning the AFC should secure a first-round bye (definitely for the Raiders, likely for the Chiefs).

Looking at the NFC East, the Cowboys still look good, but despite having and 11-2 record, they STILL have not on the division. The Giants' win over the Lions keeps them only a game behind the Cowboys. Oh, and Detroit's loss paired with Green Bay's win puts the NFC North in a close race, too.

So who will get Christmas gifts in week 16 and who will get coal?

If the Browns go 0-16, we are going to have a big discussion about how terrible they have been this season. It has been over a year since they have won a game, and that includes the preseason. That's right, if you include the preseason record (most don't for good reason), the Browns are currently 0-18, with a shot at 0-20.

The Buccaneers did not win tonight, so the Panthers and Saints still have some mathematical hopes, but things are looking quite grim with the Packers, Buccaneers, and even the Vikings ahead of them.

The big thing to look at when it comes to the playoffs is the Raiders securing a spot for the first time since 2002. That is a 14-year drought broken, and they still have a shot at a first-round bye.

One of the talking heads said last week that the 49ers were actually the worst team in the NFL despite their having beaten the Rams 28-0 in week 1.

If the Washington Redskins beat the Carolina Panthers on Monday Night Football, then the Panthers and Saints are both eliminated from the playoffs.

Yeah, Osweiler is getting a lot of "boooos" lately (..literally by Houston spectators).  I do wonder though if his poor performance is largely the result of bad coaching (..and sure, there have been obvious personal screw-ups as well).  I've seen multiple plays where he fires the ball at a place where there aren't any receivers. It's like: this is the play, follow it exactly and throw the damn ball as fast as possible to avoid any interceptions ..never mind the fact that plays don't go as planned more than half the time - and receivers can't just teleport to the desired location at the appointed time, and even if they could they would still have to catch a ball that is being thrown too fast/HARD for some often awkward angles that those receivers are in when they are when and where they are supposed to be to catch the ball. Oh, and don't run the ball yourself even if you are the best (and really ONLY option) to gain critical yardage (..presumably to avoid injury given the enormous investment). A "passing" game is the game (particularly for a team of only moderate capability) - and when he plays it as seemingly required: it's ****.
eh, maybe I'm reading to much into it - but it really does look that way to me.  There are of course other times when he plays it altogether "looser" - and when he does that he seems to be pretty good. He wasn't anywhere near as bad when he was with Denver.

So, when John Elway refused to beat the Texan's $72,000,000 ($37 million guaranteed) offer to Brock Osweiler, was he just smarter than Rick Smith?  Would Osweiler's QB play be better if J.J. Watt were healthy?  Tom Savage played well enough to come back and win the game, and they paid him only $0.30 million guaranteed.

How good is Rick Smith as a GM? Just count the number of QBs they Texans have played...yeah, Elway probably saw that Osweiler was oaky, but needed some extra proving time before getting a big contract. Frankly, it was a sad move for the Broncos AND Osweiler. Being mediocre in Denver would have given him time to develop, and the team might have been a Super Bowl Contender. Instead, Brock took the big contract in Houston and may or may not have a starting job in 2017, and the Broncos are only losing because they can't score points.

EDIT: okay, not a fair comparison, but a fun one. Pat McAfee's guaranteed cash is 12.5 times that of Tom Savage

Screw Rick Smith.  Seriously.    He and McNair are the constants in the Texans mediocrity.   We fire Kubes and what happens? He wins a G-D superbowl with Denver after a few years. We keep refusing to draft quarterbacks, we pursue mediocre ones in free agency, etc. Just, piss on Rick Smith. We let good vets walk to sign has beens like Ed Reed, stash promising and useful players on IR lickety split and just ugh. I'm too mad to continue

All of those teams keep passing up the opportunity to drive a stake into the Panthers' and Saints' NFC playoff chances.  Here's the next shot:  In week 16, both the Panthers and Saints will be eliminated from playoff contention if the Redskins beat the Bears or the Packers beat the Vikings or the Buccaneers beat the Saints.  The Vikings, Redskins and Buccaneers could also be eliminated this week if the Packers win and they lose.

Let's be bold and predict that the 0-14 Cleveland Browns will upset the 5-9 Los Angeles Chargers on Christmas Eve, ending their perfect losing season.  The Chargers are currently a six point favorite.  Oddsmakers have the Browns as 2¼:1 underdogs straight up (+225 on the money line).  If the Browns don't get their Christmas miracle win at home against the Chargers, they would be even less likely to get a win at Heinz Field on New Year's Day.

Well since we are rolling quickly into a football Christmas...

Week 16

Thursday Night Football
New York Giants at Philadelphia

Saturday, Christmas Eve
Miami at Buffalo
New York Jets at New England
Tennessee at Jacksonville
Minnesota at Green Bay
San Diego at Cleveland
Washington at Chicago
Atlanta at Carolina
Indianapolis at Oakland
Tampa Bay at New Orleans
Arizona at Seattle
San Francisco at Los Angeles

Cincinnati at Houston

Sunday, Christmas Day
Baltimore at Pittsburgh
Denver at Kansas City

Monday Night Football
Detroit at Dallas

Dallas still need to work to win their division (assuming the Giants beat the Eagles on Thursday). Cleveland's last realistic chance at a 2016 will be against the Chargers, but I think that's unlikely. I'd prefer taking the NFC's worst team over the Los Angeles Rams.

I am pretty uneasy about seeing the Colts in Oakland. Sure, we've been a surprise lately, but that's a way away game against a red-hot team who still need to win their division...

In the NFC, the 10-5 New Jersey Giants clinched the first wild card slot despite their loss on Thursday night.  The 10-5 Atlanta Falcons clinched the NFC South division.  The 9-5 Detroit Lions and the 9-6 Green Bay Packers will meet in the last week of the season to decide the NFC North title, with the loser of that game in the mix for the second wild card spot, along with the 8-6-1 Washington Redskins and the 8-7 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In the AFC, tomorrow's games will make things much clearer.

The Pittsburgh Steelers clinched the AFC North title by defeating the Baltimore Ravens.  The final AFC playoff spot comes down to the 10-5 Miami Dolphins or the 8-6 Denver Broncos.  A loss to the Kansas City Chiefs tonight will eliminate the defending Super Bowl champions.

With the combinations of wins/losses in the AFC, we have the 6 AFC playoff teams set in stone: New England, Oakland, Houston, Pittsburgh, Miami, and Kansas City. The only things left open are the winner of the AFC West and home field advantage.

In the NFC, we already knew that Dallas would have home field advantage and Seattle would win the NFC West, but now Atlanta have secured the NFC South, the New York Giants have clinched a Wild Card spot. The final Wild Card and the NFC North will come down to Green Bay's week 17 visit to Detroit. The winner will take the division, and the other may have to rely on help around the conference to sneak into the other Wild Card.

Now, we look to week 17 with some serious games for a couple teams.

Week 17
Baltimore at Cincinnati
Houston at Tennessee
Carolina at Tampa Bay
Cleveland at Pittsburgh
Dallas at Philadelphia
Buffalo at New York Jets
Chicago at Minnesota
Jacksonville at Indianapolis
New England at Miami
Kansas City at San Diego
Arizona at Los Angeles
Oakland at Denver
New York Giants at Washington
Seattle at San Fransisco
New Orleans at Atlanta

Sunday Night Football, and the de facto NFC North Championship Game
Green Bay at Detroit

So the loss or Derrick Carr is devastating. I don't want to write off the Raiders just yet because they have turned around and have had a good season, but I think that they have a must-win game in Denver. Oakland need to secure a first-round bye to plan for the playoffs, and they will just have a mess of a time if they drop to a Wild Card. At the same time, since the Chiefs have a chance to snag that same bye, they need to win in San Diego, which seems likely.

The game in Miami is meaningful for a couple reasons. First, Miami are going to the playoffs, and notching a win against the Patriots would be a good morale boost. It won't put the Dolphins in a better playoff seed, but it could give them momentum to upset on the road. At the same time, if Oakland AND Miami pull of wins, then New England would lose home field advantage, and that had a huge impact on Denver's successful Super Bowl run last year.

In the NFC, we have a young Dallas team with nothing else to win in the regular season, but if the coaches are smart, they'll still play a full 60 minutes against the Eagles just to stay sharp. That does risk injury to key players, but the alternative is to risk laziness on a team with little playoff experience. Dallas have had a great season, so now we see how they finish.

And of course...the game of the week will happen in Prime Time. Green Bay goes on the road to win the NFC North. The Packers are hot when it counts, and despite Detroit's good season, I think the Packers take the NFC North and enter the playoffs as one of the stronger teams.

Okay, I know that this will be a third post in a row, but it's worth mentioning that Rex Ryan is the latest coach to lose his job. Buffalo fired him after just two seasons not making the playoffs. The real coaching discussions will have to wait until January 2nd, after the season ends, but with a few coaches hitting the market, I am sure there is plenty of buzz behind the scenes.

On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. It's infested by crypto bull****.

It's still the NFL's 2016 season until Super Bowl 51

Also, coaching fallout is 99.9% seated in 2016.

Huh...it actually seems like firing coaches before "Black Monday" might be a new norm. I don't think there were any more firings, "mutual separations", or retirements that we didn't already know about.

Fun fact, though, the 9ers are still on the hook for ~$25 million to former HCs Chip Kelly and Jim Tomsula. Tomsula signed a 4-year, $14 million deal (2 years and $7 million left); Chip Kelly signed a 4-year, $24 million deal (3 years, $18 million left).

Also a fun fact, apparently ESPN paid $100 million to televise a single Wild Card game. Which one did they get? The one with the Texans and Raiders...on Saturday...in the afternoon. I've read one article that said ESPN can only make around $25 mil on the game.

EDIT:

Wild Card Weekend

Saturday
Oakland Raiders at Houston Texans (winner: New England Patriots)

Detroit Lions at Seattle Seahawks

Sunday
Miami Dolphins at Pittsburgh Steelers

New York Giants at Green Bay Packers
