2016 World Series

Sun Oct 23, 2016 1:54 am

The two longest droughts meet in a dream Series for old-time baseball fans. May it live up to its expectations. Either team will make a fine champion but c'mon, who doesn't want to see the Cubs finally pull through.

The problem for the Cubbies is that a press photo showed Wild Thing sitting in the stands, no doubt being prepared for relief work.

I grew up rooting for the other Chicago team, but lost interest in baseball many years ago.  Still, about 90% of my friends are Cubs fans, and it would be nice to see them get the monkey off their back.

My Dad was an infant last time the Cubs were in the World Series. His mother was an infant in Sweden the last time they won.

I'm excited. Also excited that it's on regular Fox instead of FS1.

Cubs should have got it done last year. Not that I care about baseball at all - but seriously, last year was the right time and they blew it. Back to the Future fans everywhere have never been so disappointed.

I'm not a baseball fan, but I do get amusement counting historically significant events that have happened since the Cubs last won a World Series. Part of me wants to see that list grow.

I've been saying for years that if the Cubs win the Series, this town will burn to the ground.

Having said that, I've been a cubs fan since 1981 so this is kinda a big deal for me.

So far so good. The first couple games weren't exactly close but they were fun. Last night's first WS game at Wrigley since before my dad was born turned out to be electric.

I'm surprised that dump of a stadium didn't just collapse.

Game 7. Bring it on. I'm pulling for the Cubs but would shed no tears if the Indians won it.

I listened to games 3 and 6 on the radio (can't be bothered with television anymore). The guys calling the game on ESPN are not half bad, right up until Chapman twisted his foot. Then you'd think these guys' first-graders were playing their first-ever game of kickball and one of them fell down for the very first time.

"It's the RIGHT leg" (rephrase and repeat with feigned concern)

"Yeah, definitely the RIGHT leg" (repeat, and emphasize which leg it is, so that the idjit audience will know, most DEFINITELY; then repeat AGAIN in case we were too occupied texting or picking our noses or something)

"We'll have to see if he comes back after this next half inning" (push the feigned concern up to level 8, then rephrase and repeat 7 times)

"He's already thrown 15 pitches, and the Indians want to keep him on the mound as long as possible" (rephrase with deep emotion and repeat 8 times)

"He's already thrown 15 pitches and the Cubs would like to save him for tomorrow" (rephrase and repeat 9 times)

^ THIS carp is manufactured for dumb people. I'm not convinced that all television-watchers are dumb (I don't know but these two sounded like TV play-by-play guys), but so many of us accept this anyway! Why?

And of course, now I remember why I don't have TV and now I know why I don't miss watching even NFL games. Ick! I'm not convinced I need to even listen to game 7 now.

I miss Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey. Those guys were great, and they didn't beat the radio listener over the head with repeated drivel. "Strike three, and he (the batter) just stood there like the house by the side of the road..." Now THAT was baseball, and THAT was SUMMER!

For me it was '70s-'80s Yankees with Bill White & Phil Rizzuto. Same commentary on radio and TV so it didn't matter if you could see the TV, but they still kept you invested in the game, Bob how I miss Phil.

Whatever he (or anyone) said/says about his monologue in "Paradise by the Dashboard Light", anyone that spent any time at all listening to Phil Rizzuto call a game knew that that was pure Phil that had already come out in his calls.

Loving the series. I really thought they were done when down 3-1 and they weren't hitting the pitchers. Now it's Kluber again for the Indians. He has been pretty untouchable.

I'll be up too late again watching. Who knows if it will happen again in my lifetime? The Cubs DO have a young team and all, but it's hard to get to the WS in the best of times.

If the Cubs win tonight it would be only the 6th time in history that a team came back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series.

Extras in Game 7 between the two teams with the longest droughts? Classic.

Then we have to listen to Joe Buck. To appropriate a meme, Buck wouldn't "voom" if you put 4,000 volts through him.

Fireworks going off in my neighborhood and I'm a good 3 hours south of wrigleyville.

Seriously classic game. Glad Chapman got torched at least.

Also, the crack in his voice indicates that Buck certainly voomed.

The math on this is fun. It was 6 out of like 47, and if you assume every game in a best of seven is a coin flip, what are the odds of getting that same result 3 in a row? 12.5% right? What's 6 out of 47? Just over 13%. Playoffs are a coin flip.

Methinks that most of Illinois will be that way for a few nights.

Cute. I guess this also implies that the teams which make it to the World Series tend to be pretty evenly matched. (Which makes sense.)

They're going off out here too (a lot closer than derFunk, but still well outside the Chicago city limits).

Betcha there will be a lot of people calling in sick tomorrow... I plan to work from home, so I won't have to deal with any craziness happening downtown.
