We may see Alonso charge from the back row of the starting grid to score points this weekend, courtesy of a 20-place grid penalty for his eleventh turbocharger and MGU-H (out of four allowed) for the season. He was 8th and 7th fastest in the first and second practice periods.

Well done Lewis Hamilton. Caught the last half, and what stands out near the end was the wheel to wheel battle with Alonso, both racing clean and taking no quarter. It's the kind of racing you would expect from two world champions.

Um, what? That "battle" summed up why F1 has a terrible overtaking problem. Alonso's McLaren was 12 km/h slower on the straights and that was without the help of DRS for Hamilton.

It was more like 14 to 16 kph and more than 1 second per lap advantage to the Mercedes. Alonso's qualifying lap had an exceptionally high trap speed due to a well-executed bit of teamwork, with Vandoorne providing his team-mate a tow down the long straight.

Vettel certainly sliced through the back markers with more authority than Hamilton did in this race. How many laps did it take the world champion to get around Pascal Wehrlein in the lowly Sauber?

"Battle" is just a description of when Hamilton finally decided to take another meaningless place, he and Alonso were temporarily racing side by side through the esses, which of course negates any trap speed advantage on the straightway. My comment was only made to highlight that wheel to wheel racing, which is a complete rarity in modern formula one, remains exciting in and of itself, showing the mastery of the car in the moment and not when "driving the perfect line" of each corner. The fact that they did it without any shunts was my subtle ("too subtle?") indictment about how sometimes other drivers and former world champions cannot seem to manage their way around the track without playing bumper cars, a good old tried and true NASCAR (inherited from the dirt tracks) technique that Schumacher was quite adept at. It would have been nice if this type of racing could have occurred at the beginning of the race, with two of the fastest cars going wheel to wheel. Unfortunately one of the most skilled drivers on the planet managed to momentarily lose control of his car (as he was being over taken), and managed to puncture someones rear tire with his front wing.

Anyways, I look forward to next year, and the possibility of a three way battle for the lead in every race. Cheers to the other devoted racing fans on this site, and may next world champion be the racer who has earned it through their performance on track, as it appears that the cars are now closer than ever. Did anyone say IROC? Remember, it's all for fun.

Vettel's damage in the first lap was to the front wing, which was replaced in the pitstop. He had a fully working car. Hamilton had a large chunk out of the rear diffuser. When you get close to someone and the wings get turbulent air then you are going to be more reliant on the downforce from the diffuser.

Having said that, he appeared not to be using DRS when behind Alonso until Massa turned up in his mirrors, so not fighting hard for it.

Could he have fought harder? Yes. Was his lack of pace and difficulty in passing all down to him? No.

After starting from the pit lane with a new PU and tweaked aero, Hamilton couldn't have hoped for a better first lap:
  • 3 cars retired in lap 1 incidents
  • 3 more cars pitted on lap 1 due to incidents/damage (Ricciardo, Grosjean, Wehrlein)
  • Together that moved him forward 6 places for "free" without any overtaking
  • Safety car deployment bunched the field together and nullified his penalty of starting from the pit lane
  • Then it was just a matter of scything through the remaining backmarkers and midfield.

Oh, it also allows people to refer to it as eXtreme, because Xs make everything cool and new-age!

On the topic of tyre compounds, here's an interesting tweet from F1 Fanatic:
Total number of racing laps completed on the hard tyres in 2017: 0

Seems to me like rather than adding one more compound, they can just retire the hardest compound, introduce this new pink compound, and sanitize the names:
  • 2017's hard - retired in 2018
  • 2017's medium - named hardest in 2018
  • 2017's soft - named hard in 2018
  • 2017's supersoft - named medium in 2018
  • 2017's ultrasoft - named soft in 2018
  • 2018's new pink compound - named softest for 2018

As computer geeks, we've seen product names use ridiculous adjectives to distinguish themselves, to appear cool, and to appeal to buyers. We don't need that in F1, we need clarity. By removing modifiers like "super", "ultra", "mega", "hyper" & "extreme", and instead using either comparative or superlative adjectives, it should help bring about clarity.

Nice stat - what with the move to 3 power units for 2018.

Formula 1 driver lineup for 2018:
Mercedes: Lewis Hamilton & Valtteri Bottas
Ferrari: Sebastian Vettel & Kimi Raikkonen
Red Bull / Renault: Daniel Ricciardo & Max Verstappen
Force India / Mercedes: Sergio Perez & Esteban Ocon
Williams / Mercedes: Lance Stroll & ? Robert Kubica ?
Renault: Carlos Sainz Jr. & Nico Hulkenberg
Toro Rosso / Honda: Pierre Gasly & Brendon Hartley
Haas / Ferrari: Romain Grosjean & Kevin Magnussen
McLaren / Renault: Fernando Alonso & Stoffel Vandoorne
Alfa Romeo Sauber / Ferrari: Marcus Ericsson & Charles Leclerc

It's a bit surprising that Swiss team Sauber decided to keep their slowest Swiss driver (Ericsson) over both the more talented German (Pascal Wehrlein) from their 2017 roster and the Ferrari-supported Italian (Antonio Giovinazzi). I expect that the young rookie from Monaco (Leclerc) will outscore Ericsson in 2018.

Doesn't Longbow own the team and back Ericsson as well (source)? It appears to be a financial/sponsorship-driven decision, not talent. But yes, given Wehrlein's performance this year, its a shame this his contract was not extended.

Let's see what Williams does about their other seat, there are a couple of talented options to choose from, and Kubica hasn't seemed the easy shoo-in that we fans thought he might be.

I'd love to see Kubica return but I'm surprised he's reached the point he has. Does he have backers with big pockets? He's only 4 years younger than Massa.

I don't think Kubica brings any (major) sponsorships with him. And that's part of the reason why Williams are happy to continue with Papa Stroll and his millions.

I would like to see Kubica back, simply because I could do with a happy human-interest story in F1, after Bianchi's sad passing

I totally forgot about Stroll and his mega family backing. This now makes sense:

“Of the drivers on their list, Sirotkin is said to have the most financial backing but Williams said this was not the main factor in their decision. Their priority is on-track performance.”

The 2017 Formula 1 season had half as many overtakes as the 2016 season did:
https://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2017/12/ ... 17-season/

Consider that the 2017 Indianapolis 500 had 35 passes for the lead - which is double what the average 2017 Formula 1 race had through the entire field.

I haven't followed F1 for many years now, but I just happened to be in a place where I could watch some of the Australian GP earlier this year. Though it was "competitive" by modern standards, it was also pretty boring to watch, at least in my view.
When the cars can't get any closer to one another than 30m (pick your number) without encountering such dirty air that they can't get any closer...

...and when the "pass" that wins the race (or loses it) can realistically happen only on pitlane, you have a fundamental problem with the "racing" part of your overall "auto-racing" product.

As was suggested back near the beginning of this thread, they COULD revert to a non-aero car (or one which depended a lot less on aero). Not necessarily a Lotus 49...but something a lot less dependent on having clean air to work well in traffic is the ticket, IMO. Without something closer to that, I won't be watching much more F1 than I already do now. AKA, almost none.

That Brabham BT49 was "skirt dependent" btw, and it's probably something of a dead-end too (though interesting enough, and despite its lack of popularity with many of the drivers due to the extremely harsh ride).
