And Valteri Bottas breaks his F1 cherry. Even better, Lewis isn't on the podium.

Did Vettel drive the wheels off that car in the last few laps or what?

EDIT: The one good bit about the NBC/Comcast merger is that I can get all of it streaming. Plan to watch the North London Darby in this chair in a couple of hours.

The announcement that Sauber will buy engines from Honda next year is comedy gold. It's like the new owners looked around and said "The plan is set. We've definitely got the worst-engineered chassis in F1, but somehow you guys still screwed up and had one top-ten points-paying finish last year. What can we find that's even slower, less reliable, and cheaper than a year-old Ferrari power unit?"

And Alonso, in his first-ever session at Indy, turned a hot lap of 222.548 MPH. Not quite up to pace yet, but damn good for the first time ever at Indy (or any oval, for that matter). Even better was that the car was pure McLaren orange AND uses a Honda engine. That must rankle over in Woking.

Glad I didn't have the job of cleaning it out of the car though!!!

The Indycars aren't hybrid engines are they??
The sooner F1 goes for either gas guzzlers or full batteries the better, hybrids are the worst of both worlds for top performance racing. In consumer cars it doesn't matter, just depends how deeps your wallet come repair time.

Looks like the one on the left hit the front tire and the one on the right exploded off the side-pod, so no cleaning necessary. The bird Randy Johnson hit with a fastball got off easy.

And no, no hybrids in Indy racing. V6, 2.2L, twin-turbo. Rev-limited to 12,000 with 12,200 available via the "push-to-pass" button (for a set total time per race) as well as more boost, all running on E85.

EDIT: Even better. The engine control unit is a spec piece handed out by IndyCar. It's made by McLaren/TAG.

Alonso qualifies 5th with all four laps over 231 MPH. I think he's figured out oval track in a hurry. Look for orange in your mirrors.

I want Alonso to win it but race day traffic is a totally different beast. He will need all the good fortune he can get next Sunday.

I love it. Hamilton doesn't even make it out of P2 in Monaco, ending up 14th. Even a podium finish is unlikely from 14th.

EDIT: Ferrari 1-2, first pole for Kimi Raikonnen since 2008 (France), and 1st Monaco front row for Ferrari since 2008.

Damn, Alonso has been in it all day so far (posted at lap 145).

The instant I saw that Dixon crash, though, the only thought I had was "this is exactly how Dan Wheldon died".

Crap. Blown engine on lap 180. The crowd roar was nice, though. Certainly didn't drive like a "rookie" (in a bit of Indy tradition, the car numbers on the back end of the car are yellow for "rookies" to warn approaching drivers), and I'm pretty sure the Indy crowd wants him back. He even seemed to say so to ESPN. He's certainly made his bones on high-speed ovals with his performance this month.

A worthy victor in Takumo Sata, and well worth the Asian lactose intolerance. Once Alonso went down I thought Helio might join the 4-win club, but those Honda engines that stayed together just had more power. Only one Andretti ever won the race, but a bunch of Andretti Motorsports cars have won it in recent years.

Fernando Alonso may have been a rookie driver at Indy, but he's definitely a veteran at grenading Honda racing engines.

2017 Indianapolis 500 winner Takuma Sato drove in Formula 1 for Jordan (2002), BAR (2003-2005) and Super Aguri (2006-2008). He's been racing in IndyCar since 2010.

Well Sato must be bloody happy he's finally won a significant race, after all the c*** cars he was given to drive before.
On the other hand Alonso must have a sense of deja vu all over again. He just can't take a trick with Honda powered cars at the moment.... as for leading for 20+ laps, hell yes he'll back again!!
Wasn' t able to see the race as it's in the middle of the night over here.

Poor Alonso though. Took a break from F1 because of unreliable Honda engines, only to get done in by yet another unreliable Honda engine. :-?

It's a shame that you didn't get to watch the race, Yeti. The Indianapolis 500 featured more passes for position in one race than you'll see in three complete seasons of Formula 1.

It's one thing to have an uncompetitive and unreliable engine, like McLaren/Honda F1. 'Tis a far more different thing to have the better engine with the knowledge that it just might go up on you. The ease with which Sato (Honda) passed Helio (Chevy) said it all about the relative power between the two engines.

This will not be the last time we see McLaren orange at Indy. He all but said it to ESPN and his performance today makes it clear that he can run at the front. The ABC/ESPN commentating crew were astounded at some of his outside passes. Until the motor grenaded, I really thought he was going to win this race. Yes, he got shuffled back in restarts, but was making his way back to the front when it let go. If you watched it live (I was streaming through ESPN), Michael Andretti was first on the radio to apologize for the motor.

What I'm really waiting for (since this is his quest for the Triple Crown) is McLaren orange at Le Mans. Leads me to wonder how a M8F/M20 Can-Am car would do on lap times today.
