TR Baseball 2017

Sun Feb 26, 2017 8:06 am

Well, since I just started March Madness, it's also time to start up the baseball fantasy group:

https://yho.com/mlb?l=69084&k=79b16514d ... 39e8347e3d

Invites auto-sent to all of last year's participants.

Just set draft to Saturday, 1 April 2017, at 8:30PM EDT, 5:30PM PDT, 00:30 ZULU.

We've got 6 teams in and room for 4 more. If we get to 10, I'll do two divisions with inter-division play.

Still have 6 teams in, but plenty of time to add more. This is a head-to-head league, not a rotisserie league, if that will help your decision. If you want in, PM me and I'll send you an invite.

Crap. The draft was at 8:30 Eastern. I had Central in my head. Just signed in to get ready and saw that I missed it.

Only 2 of us made it. It's why I set waivers to be immediate.

It was 43 years ago today that the rightful career home run record was set. I remember watching that game.

And yes, I still consider Maris' 61 in one season to be the rightful record.

Well, MLB considers 762 and 72 to be all-time and single-season records. They happened. They're part of baseball history.

And I say that as someone who sees Barry Bonds as a truly evil villain during a time the sport needed heroes.

That really stinks. Same thing happened to me when I was trying to add a player. I was successful the next day, fortunately.

BTW in real-world baseball, yesterday's Cards-Yankees game had one of the most bizarre pitching performances I've ever seen. Carlos Martinez went 5+ with 11Ks and 8BBs and still only managed to allow two runs, on his own wild pitch and his own throwing error.

I have no idea what's wrong with that baseball team, but they're more talented than a 3-8 record to this point would otherwise suggest. It's pretty pathetic to start out the year.

I feel the same way about the Mariners. Its a solid roster and pitching staff. Felix isn't the pitcher he used to be, but he is really pitching well with decreased velocity.

He's gone from a thrower to a pitcher. He used to be able to just pour on the gas. And he could hit spots and change speeds and all that, but he's mixing it up more. I love these pitch selection charts from Brooks Baseball that really show it. Here's Felix's percentages and outcomes graph. When that four-seamer was over-powering, he'd throw it a lot more. Now he's mixing in a sinker and even a little bit of a cutter.

You can dig into velocity/movement, location, and so on. Tons of data on every player.

True confessions time: I have no idea how Yahoo does the scoring. My experience was with ESPN, which was fairly easy. But how are points given and then how are they taken away?

Each category in the matchup represents one point. Whoever is doing better in that category gets the point. Here's an example.

Your overall record is points won against points lost plus points tied. I am currently, sadly, 9-16-3 so far.

I have no idea how I pulled out a tie. Saturday, I was down 11-3. Sunday, finished 7-7. But I am starting to understand the scoring system. Not my favorite, but I can work with it.

With Sunday's (5/14/17) official retirement of Derek Jeter's #2, there will be no single digit numbers available on Yankees jerseys. They're all retired.

0 As if the Yankees would allow this
1 Billy Martin
2 Derek Jeter
3 Babe Ruth
4 Lou Gehrig
5 Joe Dimaggio
6 Joe Torre (should have gone to Roy White)
7 Mickey Mantle
8 Yogi Berra & Bill Dickey
9 Roger Maris (Graig Nettles??)

I need some help understanding the Pitchers. What are all the P positions for? Are they treated differently than SP or RP? Are there stats counted less?

SP = Starting Pitcher

RP = Relief Pitcher

You can put either in a slot marked just "P".

You want some of both, as SPs get you wins and RPs get you saves.

Yes, usually you have more SPs than there are SP slots and (usually) more RPs (closers) than you have RP slots. Since SPs only start once per five days, you rotate them into the SP slots as their starts come up. On the odd day when you have more than two SPs starting, you stick the extras in the P slots. The rest of the time, you want to have the closers sitting in the P slots because you never know when they might pick up a save. Note that this requires you to adjust your roster regularly to rotate guys into and out of these spots, because inevitably you'll have some sitting on the bench and you don't want them there on days when they get their start. However, because rotations are generally on a fairly rigid 5-day schedule you can usually set your rosters for every day of the entire week on Sunday evening, and then just check in periodically to adjust things in case of injury, rain-outs, starts getting pushed back, etc. You have to do that for the position players anyway, because Mondays and Thurdays are often off days where you have to juggle guys off your bench if you're trying to maximize your counting stats. Note that Yahoo tends to carry forward a roster from one day to the next -- eg, if you swap a guy into the SS position from the bench for Monday, he'll be there on Tuesday as well. That's annoying if you only put him there because your regular SS had no game on Monday. So what I do is roll ahead to Tuesday, set my lineup there (maybe just swap a starter around from SP to P or whatever) and then go back and do the major one-off adjustments that Monday requires, without having it affect later days. (And ditto for Friday and Thursday).

Some folks who are serious about fantasy are constantly (ie daily) adding and dropping SPs, so that they have a starter or two going every day -- eg you pick up Lance Lynn for his start yesterday, and then drop him and replace him for Erasmo Ramirez who is starting today. And on and on. In the fantasy world this is called "streaming" -- and that's way too much work for me, especially for a casual league where no money is at stake. Some folks seem to enjoy it (or can't help themselves) but I also find it can bite you in the ass, because the guys you're picking up are by definition not good enough to keep so they frequently have bad starts, and while it means you might accumulate extra Ks or Ws, a couple of bad starters can blow up your K/9 and BB/9 stats.

A less extreme version of this for people who don't want to be that committed to daily roster fiddling is to look for 2-start pitchers: the guys who are getting starts on Monday and Tuesday will (usually) get another on Saturday and Sunday (respectively), so if they're decent pitchers they might be worth an add for the week, to be replaced by another 2-start pitcher the following week. This fits nicely if you're in the habit of doing all your roster adjustments on Sunday night.

That's only possible when the pitcher records an out. Plenty of pitchers have come in and given up runs without getting anyone out. All those LOOGY types who have an outing go terribly wrong and give up a homer, for instance. No ERA because there's no pace to completing a game when that happens.

And not just LOOGYs -- sometimes a starter can have things go horribly wrong to start a game. The recent-ish example that comes to mind is this game by the then-Florida Marlins against the Boston Red Sox, in which Florida's Carl Pavano gave up 6 runs to start the game without recording an out. He was then relieved by Michael Tejera, who gave up 4 more runs without recording an out. The Red Sox were already up 10 and the top of their order was getting to bat again... and it was still the first inning with no outs. The Marlins' third pitcher of the inning (and the game) Allen Levrault, mercifully got them out of the inning, though not without allowing the Sox to score four more. Johnny Damon, Boston's leadoff hitter who had already been on base and scored twice, got a hit in his third trip to the plate that inning though ultimately the third out was recorded in a play at the plate with Boston up 14-0. But not before two Florida pitchers had given themselves an infinite ERA for the game.
