Is John Mara an evil genius? Did he plan the whole scenario out in advance? Eli's performance wasn't great and the time was coming that the Giants would need to move on. As the team's season spiraled toward the bottom of the standings, the Giants were moving up the 2018 draft board in what is widely reported to be a quarterback-rich draft. McAdoo was a dead coach walking, anyway. Maybe Mara set the soon-to-be-fired coach up to be the trigger man taking the unpopular step of benching Eli, thus allowing Mara to re-ingratiate himself to the fans by firing the coach that dared to bench their favored player.

Week 14

Thursday Night Football 12/7
New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons

Sunday 12/10
Minnesota Vikings at Carolina Panthers
Indianapolis Colts at Buffalo Bills
San Francisco 49ers at Houston Texans
Chicago Bears at Cincinnati Bengals
"Oakland" Raiders at Kansas City Chiefs
Detroit Lions at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Green Bay Packers at Cleveland Browns
Dallas Cowboys at New York Giants
Washington Redskins at Los Angeles Chargers
New York Jets at Denver Broncos
Tennessee Titans at Arizona Cardinals
Philadelphia Eagles at Los Angeles Rams

Sunday Night Football
Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers

Monday Night Football 12/11
New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins

The Eagles have a chance/need to bounce back this week in LA against the overrated Rams, the Steelers must continue their march through the AFC to maintain playoff seed, and the Packers coaching staff can't afford to lose to the Browns.

Speaking of the Pack, #12's return to practice brings them back into playoff talks. They must run the table (and get some help against other WC contenders), but this team usually plays well in December, so a late run is more than plausible.

I buy the Mara conspiracy theories. Dude's been low-key scummy for a long time.

Unrelated note: I really hate injuries. The Texans have most of their best starters on IR this year :/ 15 or so players total.

The Eagles clinched a playoff berth but likely lost Wentz for a year. :(

So basically the 2017 Eagles are the 2016 Raiders...tons of promise securing a playoff berth, only to lose their QB right before the playoffs. Such a damn shame.

I guess we have the NFC South, though? The Saints are looking better than they have in years while the Saints and Panthers (2015 and 2016 NFC Champs) are running up into the Wild Card spots. Seattle and Green Bay might also be able to make serious runs, but they'll need to jump up a few spots to make the playoffs.

Besides the Saints... the Vikings, Jaguars, Eagles and Ravens are also heavily favored. The Browns' last home game of the season is this weekend, but I believe that they're more likely to win next week in Chicago than at home against the Ravens this week.

Watch out for those divisional matchups...they can easily screw up your predictions!

The Eagles have an important game. Sure, it feels like their season is dead without Wentz, but Foles has experience with the team. If he can command the same (or similar) respect on Sunday, the Eagles might still be in it to win.

Okay, who had Brock freakin' Osweiler, coming in cold off of the bench trailing 10-0 in the second quarter, scoring three touchdowns to secure a victory while completing more than 70% of his passes with no interceptions for a 148 passer rating? :-? Is this the same QB that the Texans gave away a 2nd round draft pick to get rid of in March and the same QB that the Browns cut in September?

The poor Chargers. No. Poor San Diego. The Chargers' owner gets what he deserves. San Diego loved the Chargers. And L.A. hasn't cared about football, or even non-Lakers sports in general, since the mid-80's. Even the Dodgers fans don't show up until the 2nd inning and leave in the 6th. Why the NFL though L.A. would suport two football teams is beyond me.

LA is a huge town, and it can DEFINITELY support two NFL teams...if either of them were any good, at least. The Rams have not been good in recent memory, and neither have the Chargers. The Rams have history in LA, but I think 20 years away has cooled that off. The Raiders would probably have been a better candidate for a (successful) LA team, but that didn't happen, and I think the Vegas move can work out for them.

All that is to say that until LA gets a GOOD, Super Bowl contending team, the town won't care.

Having lived in San Diego for years, and my wife being from LA, LA has a population that COULD support two NFL teams, but the population just isn't interested. Sure there are folks that enjoy football, but there are so many other things to do in Winter in SoCal. It just isn't a priority. Folks love the Lakers, and kinda like the Clippers (also a San Diego transplant). The Angels are okay, but they are out of Orange County. They aren't LA, no matter what silly branding they claim. The Dodgers have had a great product, but attendance is still driven from inning 2-6. Folks want to show up, watch part of a game, and leave. Football could happen, but why would anyone support a San Diego team? And San Diegans feel quite betrayed by the ownership. The Rams coming home make sense. The Chargers? Terrible move. Most of LA resents the presence of San Diego being so close. Has a transplanted NFL team ever done worse in attendance? Perhaps the 49ers inane move to Santa Clara. Sure, they didn't have many good options, but don't take the team nearly an hour away and expect attendance to be maintained. The Browns to Baltimore sure did better. Same goes for the Cardinals to Phoenix. Or even the ping pong between Oakland and LA of the Raiders. Easy transition for both cities, really. No one in LA cares about Oakland. But SD? The nicer, cleaner version of LA with 1/10th the tourists? Angelinos don't really care for San Diego or their existence. San Diego is home to the nearest Dodgers Rival, for goodness' sake! Dodger fans, when they care at all, don't care for Pad's fans.

There is just too much other things to do in LA for folks to care about football much.

I believe that you are judging the Chargers too harshly. They have been mediocre for 2017 and the previous seven seasons, but they were a good team in the late 2000s. The Chargers are still in contention for the AFC West title this year if they beat the Chiefs tonight and the Raiders on New Year's Eve.
Chargers 2017 record: 7-6 (tied for the lead in the AFC West)
2016: 5-11, 2015: 4-12, 2014: 9-7
2013: 9-7, won wild card game at Cincinnati, then lost at Denver in the second round.
2012: 7-9, 2011: 8-8, 2010: 9-7
2009: 13-3, won AFC West, had a first-round bye, then lost to the Jets in the second round.
2008: 8-8, won AFC West, won first-round game, then lost at Pittsurgh in the second round.
2007: 11-5, won AFC West, won first-round game, won second round game, then lost at New England in the AFC championship game.
2006: 14-2, won AFC West, had a first-round bye, then lost to New England in the second round.
2005: 9-7
2004: 12-4, won AFC West, then lost a first round game to the Jets.
1996-2003: No playoff appearances.
1994: The Chargers lost Super Bowl 29 to San Francisco.

The Rams have been astoundingly good this season under rookie head coach Sean McVay, but they were consistently bad with no playoff appearances in 13 consecutive years under Joe Vitt, Scott Linehan, Jim Haslett, Seve Spaguolo, Jeff Fisher and John Fassel. The Rams can clinch their playoff berth with a win over the Seahawks this week.
Rams 2017 record: 9-4 (leading the NFC West)
The Rams beat Tennessee in Super Bowl 34 under Dick Vermeil in 1999 after a 13-3 season.

P.S.: With the Chargers' loss to the Chiefs, they're probably going to go 9-7 and miss the playoffs again. Definitely mediocre.

AFC Playoff Race:
1(y) New England Patriots 11-3
2(y) Pittsburgh Steelers 11-3
3(x) Jacksonville Jaguars 10-4
4 Kansas City Chiefs 8-6 (Dolphins & Broncos remaining)
5 Tennessee Titans 8-6 (Rams & Jaguars)
6 Buffalo Bills 8-6 (Patriots & Dolphins)
Baltimore Ravens 8-6 (Colts & Bengals)
Los Angeles Chargers 7-7 (Jets & Raiders)
Oakland Raiders 6-8 (Eagles & Chargers)
Miami Dolphins 6-8 (Chiefs & Bills)
I expect the Titans to lose and the Ravens to take their wild card berth.

NFC Playoff Race:
1(z) Philadelphia Eagles 12-2
2(y) Minnesota Vikings 11-3
3 Los Angeles Rams 10-4 (Titans & 49ers)

Detroit Lions 8-6 (Bengals & Packers)
Seattle Seahawks 8-6 (Cowboys & Cardinals)
Dallas Cowboys 8-6 (Seahawks & Eagles)
Green Bay Packers 7-7 (Vikings & Lions)
I believe that the Lions have a reasonable shot to take the Falcons' wild card berth.

(Added the rest of the remaining matchups.)

The NFC seems to have the stronger contenders, but the AFC has plenty of meaningful games. The Patriots could still lose in-division to give the #1 to Pittsburgh, while the Steelers have easier games. The Jaguars face an improving SF team as well as a Titans. I agree that the Ravens are in good shape to snag a Wild Card spot, but there's plenty of shakeup that can happen up top.

Again, the NFC seems to have stronger contenders. The Vikings still have a QB questions with (effectively) 3 backups on the roster, but they are undeniably good otherwise. The Eagles proved that they can still contend with Foles under center. And I am finally ready to give the Rams some credit. (I would still caution against overrating them, as they play in a weak division and haven't been to the playoffs since the 2004 season.)

But outside of those teams, you still have a potent NFC South. The Panthers and Falcons are still good, and they really do have something to prove after embarrassing SB appearances. The Saints haven't been for a while, but having a SB-winning QB goes a long way. The Falcons are in the toughest spot, facing the entire NFC South down the final stretch, but if they win tonight, I think they'll find a push to get a second win, securing a spot.

Week 16

Saturday 12/23
Indianapolis Colts at Baltimore Ravens
Minnesota Vikings at Green Bay Packers

Sunday 12/24, Christmas Eve Football
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Carolina Panthers
Cleveland Browns at Chicago Bears
Detroit Lions at Cincinnati Bengals
Miami Dolphins at Kansas City Chiefs
Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots
Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans Saints
Los Angeles Chargers at New York Jets
Los Angeles Rams at Tennessee Titans
Denver Broncos at Washington Redskins
Jacksonville Jaguars at San Francisco 49ers
New York Giants at Arizona Cardinals
Seattle Seahawks at Dallas Cowboys

Monday 12/25, Christmas Day Football
Pittsburgh Steelers at Houston Texans
"Oakland" Raiders at Philadelphia Eagles

Games to Watch: Bucs/Panthers, Falcons Saints, Seahawks/Cowboys, MAYBE* Browns/Bears

There are a few implications in the AFC (seeding for Pats/Steelers/Jags, snagging WC spots), but the NFC South is the main event for Week 16. 3/4 teams are currently seeded for playoff spots, but the division has not yet been won. The Falcons need a win to stay in the hunt, while the Panthers and Saints are still playing to win the division (that battle could be decided in week 17). Neither the Seahawks nor the Cowboys have a playoff spot locked, but the loser of this game will certainly be out of the playoff race. Plus, the Cowboys get Elliot back from suspension, so expect some fireworks in Dallas.

*Outside of playoff implications, we have a big question this week: will the Browns post a perfect, winless season? They play in Pittsburgh next week in a game that could determine the Steelers final seeding (so that's probably a loss). But the Bears have shown some sparks this year, and NO ONE wants to lose to the Browns.

The oddsmakers are offering 2.7:1 against the Browns beating the Bears for their only win of the season. However, the Bears have been the worst franchise in the NFC in recent years.

John Breech offers some reasons to pick the Browns in this game, but I believe that it would be a good story to see the Browns win.

A win would help DeShone Kizer's confidence.

Despite Kizer posting the 3rd-worst rookie season of all-time, Robert Klemko says that we should be patient.

It’s a nice change to be able watch my team take on the Packers live. Being over east for Christmas (Queensland) and the change in time zone makes the game start at at reasonable time, 11:30am rather than early in the morning.

Also kinda amusing looking at the temperature there as we’re rapidly heading past 30C here. Just a small difference in temp.

Week 16 - Results

Saturday 12/23
Indianapolis Colts 16 at Baltimore Ravens 23
Minnesota Vikings 16 at Green Bay Packers 0

Sunday 12/24, Christmas Eve Football
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 19 at Carolina Panthers 22
Cleveland Browns 3 at Chicago Bears 20
Detroit Lions 17 at Cincinnati Bengals 26
Miami Dolphins 13 at Kansas City Chiefs 29
Buffalo Bills 16 at New England Patriots 37
Atlanta Falcons 13 at New Orleans Saints 23
Los Angeles Chargers 14 at New York Jets 7
Los Angeles Rams 27 at Tennessee Titans 23
Denver Broncos 11 at Washington Redskins 27
Jacksonville Jaguars 33 at San Francisco 49ers 44
New York Giants 0 at Arizona Cardinals 23
Seattle Seahawks 21 at Dallas Cowboys 12

Monday 12/25, Christmas Day Football
Pittsburgh Steelers 34 at Houston Texans 6
"Oakland" Raiders 10 at Philadelphia Eagles 19

4 AFC teams are still battling for playoff spots. The Titans and Ravens are currently slotted for Wild Card spots, but the Bills or Chargers could sneak in with some help. Only one NFC Wild Card is available for the Falcons or Seahawks to win.

There won't be a prime time game in week 17, so instead I am going to organize by whether or not games are relevant to the postseason picture

Week 17 (Sunday 12/31)
Just for Show
Washington Redskins at New York Giants
Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions
Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts
Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles (Eagles locked #1 NFC Seed)

Last Chance to Make Playoffs (plus some seeding impacts)
Jacksonville Jaguars at Tennessee Tittans
Buffalo Bills at Miami Dolphins
Arizona Cardinals at Seattle Seahawks
Carolina Panthers at Atlanta Falcons
Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens
"Oakland" Raiders at Los Angeles Chargers

Seeding-Only Games
New York Jets at New England Patriots
Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings
Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers
San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Rams
Kansas City Chiefs at Denver Broncos
New Orleans Saints at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Games to Watch: "Last Chance" Games. The seeding-only games could adjust the final playoff picture, but most of those are lopsided affairs with teams already locked into the postseason. Specifically, keep an eye on the Cardinals/Seahawks and Panthers/Falcons games.

Oh, and I would place 99% probability that the Browns get the perfect 0-16 season. Like I was saying earlier, the Steelers need to play this game on the off chance that they can get home-field advantage. Plus, the game is in Pittsburgh. Plus, the Browns are just bad.
