Please excuse my ignorance, as I don't know much about your football - after I watched the video you link, among the 'suggested' were one guy ranting about the game, and another along the lines of "Florida beat Tennessee in dumbest game". Could you give me a quick rundown as to why people appear so upset?

Try this one instead.

Much like the first one, it's two teams who are deadly rivals (compare Carlton/Collingwood or Carlton/Essendon).

Heh, thanks Ned - being from a northern state, I don't follow the AFL much but I definitely appreciate your attempt! I've watched the last few Superbowls, and I've got friends who follow the Broncos, St Louis - I've easily seen more NFL than AFL, NRL, or Union over the last few years (don't tell my countrymen!)

I love (and am happy to watch) a close, well fought game in almost any sport. Was that all the first game was? Or is there more behind the 'dumbest game' comments? Was it just the 'dumbest' game because their favoured team lost?

I believe that college football is more entertaining than NFL professional football because there is more variation in the capabilities of the players and in the coaching styles. The young players are more likely to be affected by emotion. In the NFL, all of the players are good (many are great) and the coaches copy whatever the most successful teams do. In college, the coaches have to adapt their game plans to match the (sometimes limited) capabilities of the players that they have.

Context:
I'm an alumnus of the University of Florida, so watching the Gators beat the Volunteers in an improbable manner is especially sweet. Florida and Tennessee play every year. The winner of this game has an advantage toward winning the East division of the Southeastern Conference.

The Gators were the underdog in this game, mostly because their offense has been very poor for the past few years. They have struggled to find another great quarterback since Tim Tebow. The coach suspended the team's best wide receiver, their starting running back and several other players for infractions off the field just before the season began, making their offense even less effective. Florida lost their first game of the season. Their second scheduled game was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma affecting nearly all of the Florida peninsula last weekend. Classes had been cancelled for the previous nine days. Residents are still returning home after the largest mass evacuation in U.S. history. Some of the other schools in the state couldn't play their scheduled games this weekend due to on-gong power outages and storm recovery efforts.

For most of the game, Florida's offense looked as bad as expected but their defense played well enough to have the game tied with 9 seconds left to play. 63 yards from the end zone, Florida's 19 year-old freshman quarterback took the snap, evaded the rush, rolled out of the pocket, pulled up short of the line of scrimmage and hurled a perfect strike 66 yards through the air to a sophomore wide receiver who caught the ball in the end zone with no time remaining on the clock, winning the game. :D

It was an ugly, sloppy, and poorly-played game on both sides, which drove the "dumbest" commentary. One of those games where someone has to win but there will be no glory in it. The Auburn/Alabama game I linked was on tenterhooks for the full 60 minutes. There are rivalries, RIVALRIES, and then Auburn/Alabama. Hell, the game comes with its own name, the Iron Bowl.

30 years ago, when ESPN wasn't owned by Disney and was still a scrappy bullfighter, AFL matches were one of their core programming decisions. Watched a lot of footy back in those days. Always had a laugh at the Poindexter in his white lab coat and flags signifying goals or behinds. ISTR being a Hawthorn fan at the time, though the ethanol consumption back then may be doing the talking.

Thanks for the replies, the extra context helps a bunch.

And I guess you learn something new every day! I suppose streaming makes it trivial these days, but I makes me wonder what other local sports are available overseas these day..

As a Gator Engineering alumni too I was so glad to see something to get excited about!!! I've been disappointed in their offense last few seasons so I'm hoping this will boost morale and get them going.
My brother scored some free tickets to that game from a friend on the 50 yd line close to the field. The swamp was rocking' and I bet there was some serious partying in Gainesville that night.
Go Gators!

I'm mad I didn't get to see Clemson play last night. I didn't realize they had a Friday game this week. I read that Kelly Bryant went out with a concussion in the 2nd quarter and they just flat had a horrible 2nd half. I hope he's OK. Fortunately they have a bye next week so that'll give him some extra time to recover.

I watched some of it--they were flat horrible from the whistle. The game was only close at the half because they had a fumble-recovery-for-touchdown.

BAh I hate ND! Make them join a conference already! If you want in the playoffs join a freaking conference.

That being said, I know they said they want to run at least 7 years before any modifications are made to the format but I really think they need to expand it to 8.

Yeah BUT....the selection committee has kept saying over and over it's strength of schedule that weighs a lot, does South and Central Florida even have a measured FPI?

From a playoff standpoint they aren't even in the hunt. Good for their programs though.

I may have to actually watch Penn State / OSU. I'll pretend the spirit of Marty (ex from many years past and obsessed OSU fan) is in the room and I can root against her team like I always did when we watched games together. I'm such a sports troll. I live with three Massachusetts natives now, so my favorite NFL team is whomever is playing Gisele and the Patsies week to week.

After Jeremy Foley allowed Will Muschamp to continue for more than a year longer than he should have, the Gators had a short hook for Jim McElwain.

With Missouri coming up next week, the interim coach (likely to be Randy Shannon) has a decent chance at a W.

Yep, Gator Athletic Dept is not going to put up with that many losses for long. I did not watch the FL-GA game since it would be so one-sided.
Oh well, FSU is not doing well either so maybe it'll be a game to see over the Thanksgiving break...

I don't know that it was the losses. The gators did win the SEC East in each of McElwain's first two years. It may have more to do with how painful it has been to watch the offense struggle. Letting Will Grier go certainly seems to have backfired.
