I loved Max's comments about how the journalists should go ask Seb if he was going to change his approach to races.

Folks seem to be piling on McLaren lately:

You have to change the thinking. I don’t know how long that will take, or whether the team can survive that kind of a fundamental turnaround. Considering that when we joined McLaren in 1980 the problems I had then trying to change the way things were done, we’re talking about a fairly small operation then. If you take those problems to today with the numbers of people there, I wouldn’t relish that job. It’s like turning an oil tanker.

The Woking racers have painted egg on their own faces by failing to manage expectations. Had McLaren not spent the Honda years talking up their Red Bull-beating chassis (yeah right...) we might have forgiven them for having a bad weekend or six with their new engine partners. But when all the fingers of blame are pointed outside and yet the problems are internal? It's not a good look, and not one that begets any sympathy at all.

Meanwhile, the relationship with some of the press couldn't be worse:

Am I the only one that cheers for Alonso when he lashes out at the media?

Fernando Alonso wrote:
A weekend like that, the only problem is the media attention it attracts and the lack of normal conversation goes into the bad news or good news, and everything is exaggerated, especially in Formula One with all the polemics and all the things you need to sell every week. We had a quite poor weekend in terms of performance, uncompetitive on Friday, uncompetitive on Saturday, uncompetitive on Sunday. We are the first ones to know that, and we want to improve that. At the same time, we are not last. We are not getting worse and worse. We are not the worst team in the paddock. We are not these things that we've been hearing for the last three days. We are fifth in the constructors' championship, I'm eighth in the drivers' championship. All the other ones that are doing a perfect season, they are behind us, so maybe they are not so perfect and we are not so bad. We understand we have been uncompetitive, and we are the first ones that we want to improve that.

We had zero points last season, and now we have fifth in the constructors' championship and eighth in the drivers' championship. So again, the situation changed a lot and improved a lot. We are not where we want to be, and we want to improve. We want to fight for podiums, we want to fight for championships. We were thinking this year could be that transition to be close to the podiums and close to the Red Bull performance, and we are not. We realise that, and we accept that we need to improve. If this was the season to improve, yes, it was, and we did improve massively.1900 percent more points than last year, so we are doing what we can.

One has to go back to 2013 to find a season with 4 teams winning races and 2012 with 6 teams.

EDIT: Just went on a Wiki Dance to find that 1982 was the most diverse season, with 8 winning teams (as defined by F1). 6 teams has been done in 1975, 1977, 1981, 1983, and 2012. 2012 is looking a bit like an outlier there.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

I watched the entire race and Hamilton was a pissy little bitch on the radio the entire time. He simply can't understand why the rest of the field just won't get out of his way. Ayrton, no paragon of stability himself, would slap Lewis silly and tell him to man up and get on with it.

If only Finnish weren't so impenetrable.

There's a shakeup at Mercedes for 2019:
http://www.espn.co.uk/f1/story/_/id/240 ... cture-2019
Mercedes engineering director Aldo Costa is to step back and move into a consultancy role from the start of 2019. Performance director Mark Ellis has decided to retire from his current position and will begin a sabbatical next year.

I'll post it here because this spot makes the most sense.

In 1983 Stefan Bellof, driving a Porsche 956, set a lap record at the Nordschleife (6:11:13) that was widely assumed to be unbreakable. There have been only a handful of 6 minute times since then, and under 8 minutes is the goal of any car calling itself "sporting". In 2018, Porsche took its Le Mans-winning (2015-2017) 919 Hybrid and pulled off all of the limiters required to run at Le Man, turning it into the 919 Hybrid Evo.

It ran 5:19:55. Taking a second or two off the Nordschleife record is expected. Damn near a whole minute?? Inconceivable [/Vizzini]. Proof here:

It's pretty bad when a test driver says that the paintjob is the only thing good about the car.

That was thrilling. I wonder if the teams will have enough time to review their mistakes before next week's race in Hungary?

https://www.fia.com/events/fia-formula- ... ication-26
1 Lewis Hamilton - Mercedes - 1 stop - perfect team tire strategy won this race :D
2 Valtteri Bottas - Mercedes - 2 stops - followed team orders to let Hamilton win
3 Kimi Raikkonen - Ferrari - 2 stops
4 Max Verstappen - Red Bull / Renault - 3 stops - uncharacteristically bad strategy calls from Red Bull
5 Nico Hulkenberg - Renault - 3 stops
6 Romain Grosjean - Haas / Ferrari - 3 stops - passed four cars in the last six laps :)
7 Sergio Perez - Force India / Mercedes - 1 stop
8 Esteban Ocon - Force India / Mercedes - 1 stop
9 Marcus Ericsson - Sauber / Ferrari - 1 stop :)
10 Brendon Hartley - Toro Rosso / Honda - 2 stops
11 Kevin Magnussen - Haas / Ferrari - 3 stops
12 Carlos Sainz Jr - Renault - 3 stops - penalty for passing under safety car cost him two places
13 Stoffel Vandoorne - McLaren / Renault - 2 stops
14 Pierre Gasly - Toro Rosso / Honda - 2 stops
15 Charles LeClerc - Sauber / Ferrari - 3 stops
DNF Fernando Alonso - McLaren / Renault - 4 stops
DNF Lance Stroll - Williams / Mercedes - 3 stops
DNF Sebastian Vettel - Ferrari - 1 stop - crashed while leading :(
DNF Sergey Sirotkin - Williams / Mercedes - 2 stops
DNF Daniel Ricciardo - Red Bull / Renault - That new Renault power unit didn't make it to the end of the race.

Standings after eleven of twenty-one races:
https://www.fia.com/events/fia-formula- ... ifications
310 Mercedes
302 Ferrari
211 Red Bull / Renault
80 Renault
59 Haas / Ferrari
58 Force India / Mercedes
48 McLaren / Renault
21 Toro Rosso / Honda
18 Sauber / Ferrari
4 Williams / Mercedes

188 Lewis Hamilton - Mercedes
171 Sebastian Vettel - Ferrari
131 Kimi Raikkonen - Ferrari
122 Valtteri Bottas - Mercedes
106 Daniel Ricciardo - Red Bull / Renault
105 Max Verstappen - Red Bull / Renault
52 Nico Hulkenberg - Renault
40 Fernando Alonso - McLaren / Renault
39 Kevin Magnussen - Haas / Ferrari
30 Sergio Perez - Force India / Mercedes
29 Esteban Ocon - Force India / Mercedes
28 Carlos Sainz Jr - Renault
20 Romain Grosjean - Haas / Ferrari
18 Pierre Gasly - Toro Rosso / Honda
13 Charles LeClerc - Sauber / Ferrari
8 Stoffel Vandoorne - McLaren / Renault
4 Lance Stroll - Williams / Mercedes
5 Marcus Ericsson - Sauber / Ferrari
2 Brendon Hartley - Toro Rosso / Honda
0 Sergey Sirotkin - Williams / Mercedes

P.S.: Now the stewards have belatedly taken notice of Hamilton driving across the grass from the pit entry back onto to the race track. This seems likely to give Bottas the win.

RHIP. You could be certain that if Bottas or Raikkonen had committed the same infraction, there would have been a penalty.

P.P.P.S.: If a back-marker had done it, there would have been precedent:

Felipe Massa received a drive-through in his final race for Ferrari in Brazil in 2013 for crossing the entry line when he made a stop in the race, while in another scenario Sergio Perez also received a drive through in the 2012 Monaco GP.

However, we are taking a long-term view and as a result, we have decided, in consultation with the Miami authorities, to postpone sign-off until later in the summer, with the aim of running the first Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix in the 2020 season.

I'm absolutely gutted after the German GP. Vettel should be leading the championship. At the very least Hamilton should have received a 10 second penalty for his aborted pit lane entry. Utter bollocks.

Claire Williams wrote:
Williams has been criticized for signing two inexperienced drivers who bring money to the team, but Claire Williams said she had no regrets about choosing Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin. "Put Lewis Hamilton in our car, and I'm not sure he could have made a huge amount of difference. I feel sorry for Lance and Sergey. The car just doesn't have the performance. Lance and Sergey are young but.... They have had an enormous amount of criticism leveled at them, and that is somewhat unfair. I don't think any driver could have made that much difference to our performance."

Williams' claim was questioned by BBC F1 analyst Jolyon Palmer. The former Renault driver, who was on the grid last year, pointed out that Stroll was 0.8 secs on average slower in qualifying than former team-mate Felipe Massa in the second half of last season, and that the Brazilian was not as fast as four-time world champion Hamilton. Williams have the slowest car this year on average qualifying pace, 0.4 secs behind Sauber, 0.5 secs off Toro Rosso and 0.7 secs off McLaren. The McLaren's benchmark lap times are set by double world champion Fernando Alonso, who is regarded by many as on a similar level to Hamilton.

I disagree with Claire. A talented driver can make a difference. Alonso's qualifying prowess is certainly making Stoffel Vandoorne look bad (with an average difference of 1/3 of a second), but there are significant qualifying imbalances at Ferrari and Sauber, as well.

One also expects that an experienced driver can help his or her team's engineers by providing better feedback than a tyro.
