Motorsport has put up a rather foolish opinion piece on the ten worst endings to Formula 1 careers. Anyone should acknowledge that at least fifty-one Formula 1 drivers have had worse endings.

Someday, somehow, the full live cockpit camera feed from Senna's car WILL become public and we will finally learn if the Italian prosecutors were correct in their allegation of the broken steering column abandoning Senna to his fate.

It'll probably air just after Frank Williams passes away.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

I firmly believe that, in the right car, Grosjean can be world champion. That being said I have no fracking clue what he was thinking today.

I nodded off 5 or 6 times after his spin.

Grosjean's three-spot grid penalty seems pretty light for the dangerous move that he pulled. The consequences might very easily have been much more tragic than totaling out three multi-million dollar race cars and wrecking the races of two other drivers.

F1 teams are conducting a test at Barcelona this week. Eleven of the twenty-one drivers in the test do not currently have a Formula 1 ride.

Apparently, £203,800,000 ($274,000,000 or €232,000,000) can buy Vandoorne's seat for your son (and 10% of McLaren Group).
https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/mcla ... 40100/?s=1

I'd guess that this was a pre-emptive strike against the phenomenal talent exhibited by Lando Norris.

Ferrari have removed the winglets from the mirror mountings but still have the mirrors on the halo http://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12474/ ... ed-mirrors
It will be interesting to see if others follow this or stick with their current mirror mountings.

It's good to see Red Bull team principal Christian Horner showing the same focus on winning as his driver did.

https://www.crash.net/f1/feature/897111 ... redemption
http://www.espn.co.uk/f1/story/_/id/236 ... omparisons
Christian Horner wrote:
So it was like, okay we are likely to ingest a whole bunch of shrapnel from the MGU-K so we should stop the engine, but I said no let's keep running and if it stops it stops, we are leading the Monaco Grand Prix. I discussed it with Adrian and he was in total agreement that we go until it smokes.
Of course, the Red Bull team were at the same time telling Verstappen to be patient and drive clean.

Overall, other than the terrifying ride-along with LeClerc when his brake failed, the race was rather boring. The current F1 cars are too wide and the Monaco track is too narrow to allow overtaking.

This is what happens when one of your front brake rotors explodes just as you need it the most:

The funny thing is that Ricciardo was pretty much on-pace despite the broken car. I guess Monaco turned out to be more about preserving those ultra/hyper-soft tires than outright engine power. Maybe he was even helped a bit by the broken hybrid power unit. It'll be a lot easier to not apply too much power and destroy your rear tires (like Vettel and Hamilton did) if the car isn't giving that much power in the first place.

That's because passing is ... difficult at Monaco, so Ricciardo got a bit of break, if passing was easier around there Vettel could have easily passed him, he had more than enough pace to do so, not to say that Ricciardo didn't do a superb job down nearly 200hp.

Vettel himself said he did try to push, but the tires just weren't having it.
https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/head ... iardo.html

“I saw [Ricciardo’s] issue and I was also told by radio and that’s when I started to push. But as soon as I got too close, or closer, then I struggled to stay there and never got in range, especially at the exit of the tunnel.

“Obviously if you get closer it doesn't help with your tyres. In some corners you don't really need power and Ricciardo was quicker than us. He was always able to open the gap and I was never really there. He could keep his pace and I think that perhaps it could have been worse for us if he hadn't had some issues.

“Mercedes were in a similar position to us, even though they were on the harder, supposed-to-be-more-robust tyre, and Daniel said he had no problems at all. So obviously, it made it difficult in the low-speed corners where you don’t need power, you need grip to stay with him and then benefit from the more power that we had clearly in the straights, but we couldn’t.”

His tires were obviously hurting and totally done near the end, on another circuit though you couldn't get away with the amount of power deficient Ricciardo had.

Hamilton's model friend waved the checkered flag 1½ laps early and that ended today's race. I am amazed that Formula 1 has experienced this repeat problem. With all of their billions, can't they afford to have someone competent standing there to tell the celebrity when to wave the flag?

Brendon Hartley was cleared from the hospital after an ugly crash when Lance Stroll put him into the wall at high speed. This guy can't catch a break lately. Prior to flying through the air in a disintegrating race car, Toro Rosso's upgraded Honda engine looked like a decent improvement over the old one from the first six races of the season. We (and some very interested folks at Red Bull) got to see just how much of an improvement when Gasly switched from the upgraded engine to an old one between practice 3 and qualifying and then switched again to a second new engine for the race.

Vettel controlled another processional race from the front all day.

Well, we now know where Fernando Alonso will be spending the month of May for the foreseeable future. With an F1 championship, Monaco, and now Le Mans under his belt, he needs just Indy to become only the second Triple Crown of Motorsports winner after Graham Hill.

There are 2 versions of the Triple Crown, i.e. Indy/Monaco/Le Mans or Indy/Le Mans/F1 WDC; Alonso would qualify for either and would also join Graham Hill in winning all four legs. The only other active driver with a chance is Juan Pablo Montoya, who needs Le Mans.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Montoya's #32 Liger team completed 365 laps to finish in ninth position overall and fifth in the LMP2 class. They were 23 laps behind Alonso's race winning #8 Toyota hybrid LMP1 and 4 laps behind the LMP2 class winning #26 Oreca.

There is rampant speculation that Fernando Alonso will walk away from McLaren's uncompetitive Formula 1 program and join IndyCar full-time in 2019.

Do you think Alonso will drive for McLaren, perhaps with Andretti as he did last year, or will he seek a ride with Penske or one of the other IndyCar teams?

Do you believe that the McLaren-Honda relationship can be mended? Through the 2020 season, IndyCar uses 2.2-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engines spinning at 12000 rpm. The two engine suppliers currently available are Honda and Chevrolet(Ilmor). For 2021 and onward, IndyCar will have a new 2.4-liter specification generating up to 900 bhp (with push to pass). That would be a good time for new engine suppliers to get into the series.

As The Paddock Turns. Bit too early for "silly season" if you ask me.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Silly season is always looming. We have 24-hour sports networks with air time to fill.

Whom might McLaren hire to replace Alonso (assuming that they wouldn't do an obvious thing like promoting talented young Lando Norris from his position atop Formula 2 or giving the seat to the son of the guy who just paid $274,000,000 to buy into their team)?

What we've identified as the areas of weakness just simply doesn't show up in a wind tunnel. Unfortunately we're having to test and experiment at the race track.
