Nice spanking of West Virginia by the Iowa State Cyclones! Best 3-3 team in the nation? Yes. Absolutely yes.

Tim Tebow is just the sixth member of the ring of honor at Ben Hill Griffin stadium, joining Steve Spurrier, Jack Youngblood, Wilber Marshall, Emmitt Smith and Danny Wuerffel.

I saw Emmit Smith play in his last season at the Swamp during my first semester at UF and was a student there through Wuerffel's years. Never saw Tebow in person but I would like to meet him someday. I know he lacked the skills to be an NFL quarterback but I was excited for a while when the Eagles where trying him out. I liked this video showing he paused to recognize a military honor guard before one of his games.

In the mid-90s, Danny Wuerffel was very good at reading defenses to know which Gator receiver would be open. He could also throw the out route into the corner of the end zone (or to the sideline just beyond the 1st down marker) to the exact spot that Chris Doering would catch it, before Doering turned to make his break, even if Doering had tight single coverage. On target, on time, every time. The timing between the two of them was uncanny. Once Doering moved on to the NFL, Reidel Anthony became the other end of that connection.

I graduated from UF after the second of Emmitt Smith's three years there. I wasn't there for his 316-yard rushing game against New Mexico. The Gator offense at that time was very predictable: Mostly, it was run Emmitt to the right, sometimes run Emmitt up the middle, rarely run Emmitt to the left, and if once or twice a quarter they faked the ball to Emmitt on play action and the quarterback actually attempted a pass, everyone in the stadium was surprised (including the defenders). Even knowing what was coming, defenders usually couldn't stop Smith from getting about five yards a carry. I was disappointed when Emmitt Smith left Florida after his junior year to enter the NFL draft and go play for the Cowboys. If he had stayed one more year, he would have shattered every one of Hershel Walker's SEC rushing records. Even after leading the NFL in rushing and being financially set for life, Smith did return to UF in a summer session to complete his bachelor's degree - a promise that he had made to his grandmother.

There was a (really dumb) debate on the radio here today. One host was saying that if Notre Dame wins out, they might not make the playoff. The other host wanted him to pee in a cup.

Notre Dame has the easiest path.

If Alabama loses a close game to LSU next week and Georgia wins out and wins the SEC championship game over LSU, we might get a repeat of the selection committee choosing a one-loss Alabama team over other worthies, but I don't believe that an undefeated Notre Dame would be excluded.

Went once as a student to Jacksonville and we beat the Bulldogs in a close game. It was fun at the game but I made the mistake of going to one of the bars afterwards on the riverside landing. Drinking and disgruntled fans do not mix well. I guess it was because I was still wearing my UF shirt but from somewhere across the room someone chunked a beer bottle and it clocked me in the head :o
It was too crowded to see where it came from.

Iowa State is currently the best three-loss team in the country. Change my mind!

Sucks that they won't be ranked unless they win out the rest of the season. That was a really rough start to the season.

Iowa State’s toughest assignment left on the regular-season schedule comes Saturday against No. 15 Texas, before the Cyclones close with matchups against Kansas State and Incarnate Word. But that last game, scheduled for Dec. 1, would be canceled if Iowa State can reach the conference championship.

Iowa State at Texas! This is potentially for a berth in the Big 12 championship!

OK so I was pessimistic. Currently ranked #16 in the CFP.

Texas is going to be a tough game, #15 vs. #16, but I think the Cyclones have what it takes to win this game by a razor thin margin.

That was a great article. FiveThirtyEight has ISU ranked higher than UCF!

College Football Playoff schedule

Saturday, December 29

No. 2 Clemson Tigers (13-0) vs. No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (12-0)
4 p.m. EST on ESPN

College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Capital One Orange Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida
No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide (13-0) vs. No. 4 Oklahoma Sooners (12-1)

Monday, January 7, 2019
College Football Playoff National Championship Presented By AT&T at Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara, California

The rankings at the end of the season weren't chaotic enough to convince the dimbulbs running the show that college football should have an 8-team playoff.

Woot! Cyclones to the Alamo bowl! That's going to be a fantastic game.

And it's amusing how many WSU Cougs are butt-hurt that they got stuck with such an inferior team. They feel they will stomp ISU because, you know, the Big 12 Doesn't Play Defense (never mind that the Cyclones held the top offense in college football to 37 points earlier this season). The game will be a wild ride, for sure.
