Thank you for the fix.

Agreed - Racefans had a nice interview with Andreas Seidl at McLaren, and he seems to be a factor in them going about quietly delivering results. Yesterday was particularly interesting to see how Max pulled away from the McLarens, while Gasly couldn't make any inroads into their track position.

Given the delays and the watering-down of changes for 2021

Yeah, that has been a series of one disappointment after the other. I think the only "planned but cancelled" change that I was happy about was the deletion of the MGU-H, I'm glad it's being retained, as it is a technical marvel. The most annoying is the retention of Ferrari's veto and their bonuses. If Ross Brawn doesn't deliver on the ability of cars to follow one another better in turbulent air, then 2021 will end up a damp squib.

Fia.com is DOWN for everyone.
It is not just you. The server is not responding...

It'd take some very creative stewards' rulings to gift another win to Hamilton.

As boring and terrible as the French Grand Prix was, today's race was one of the two best of the season.

Today was the third podium of the year for Verstappen's Honda-powered Red Bull. Before this year, a Honda-powered car had not appeared on a podium since Rubens Barichellow finished 3rd driving for Honda at Silverstone in 2008. A Honda-powered car had not won a race since Jenson Button won the Hungarian Grand Prix driving for Honda in 2006. Before that, you'd have to go back to when Gerhard Berger and Ayrton Senna drove for McLaren/Honda in 1992.

Very nice stats.

Say what one will, but it is a testament to RBR's designers, drivers and strategists that they've been able to take victories with both of the inferior PUs in F1. While I'd be surprised to see them repeating the feat again (hmm, maybe Singapore?), it is nonetheless a good result for them. The lesser said about Gasly, the better. He isn't even providing a clear separation between the top 3 and the midfield!

Leclerc just cannot catch a break! :)

Did anyone ever expect F1 decisions to be based on reality and/or common sense?

It's long past time to ditch the current regs and go back to a simple "you've got a 3 litre turbo motor, the rest is up to you". In my heart, I'd much rather see F1 adopt the 1967-1973 CanAm rules, a/k/a Mills Lane "I'll allow it".

As complicated as the current power units are, the four current suppliers have got a decent handle on it. Making them spend money on a complete redesign wouldn't necessarily benefit the racing.

I'm just an ignorant fan, but if I wanted to tweak the power unit rules, I would leave the existing 1.6-liter aluminum V6 15k rpm Internal Combustion Engine pretty much the same and I would let them use a triple-sized Energy Store with double the currently-allowed (4 MJ per lap discharge, 2 MJ per lap charge) energy transfer rates. This would push development of the ES and the MGU-K - which could conceivably lead to better electirc and hybrid production cars in the far future for Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault and Honda.

I'd also cut the aerodynamic downforce in half by returning the cars to the 1.8 meter width and getting rid of the barge boards and all of the aerodynamic crap outside of the body of the car, leaving much simpler wings.

86.8 Lance Stroll, Racing Point / Mercedes
87.8 George Russell, Williams / Mercedes
88.3 Robert Kubica, Williams / Mercedes

Unless Ferrari's race strategists are certain that it will rain in the first 10 laps of tomorrow's race, I cannot understand why they did not let Leclerc's excellent 85.5s lap on the medium tires stand. He still would have been fastest in Q2, a comfortable 0.986 seconds faster than the cut-off to make it from Q2 to Q1.

Hamilton got lucky today when the safety car came out for Giovinazzi's spin, gifting him the win that Bottas had securely in the bag up until that point.
Vettel made another high-profile error under pressure. It's not a good look for a former world champion.
LeClerc and Verstappen, meanwhile, continued to show us that they've got the best driving form on the grid.

The Britons must be feeling quite elated yesterday, between their success in F1 and the Cricket World Cup (and grateful for one fortuitously-timed safety car, and one "overthrow").

I think Bottas had lost the race even before the SC - his first stop put him back on the mediums, so he was committed to a two stop. I don't know at what point Mercedes switched Hamilton to a one-stopper, but it was definitely before the SC, given they ran his first stint much longer. Hamilton just got a bonus by pitting under the SC and not losing the 18-20 seconds this pit lane causes. He definitely seemed to have pace in hand in his second stint, seeing how he set the fastest lap of the race.

Leclerc and Max (and Lando, Russell and Albon) all make me very excited for the future of the sport - let's just hope the regulations and finances allow for all of them to be in competitive machinery quickly! The battle between Leclerc and Max was thrilling and ferocious, and I wish to see more of this.

Vettel's misjudgement in itself wasn't too bad, but when seen alongside the litany of errors (driving and judgement) he's made in recent years it does not look good. His recovery drive from Brazil 2012 is such a faraway memory.

We've got the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim coming up on 7/28 (which may be the last one for a while) and the Hungarian Grand Prix on 8/04, then we've got four weeks off before the Italian Grand Prix on 9/01. With no racing for four weeks, we can count on the bored reporters generating a ton of silly season speculation during the month of August.

Ha ha, good point. Vettel and the Haas duo aren't doing themselves any favours, either. Surprisingly, Gasly might be spared from media speculation if he performs in the next two races the way he did yesterday.

Yeah, I saw that on Haas' site, in their race report :)

Steiner has given his drivers a lot of rope in the past, and now they've managed to hang themselves with it. I think we'll see at least one new face in their driver pairing for 2020. Hey, £35 million might get them a better driver.

PS: Obligatory Storey snark.

Nothing like a spot of rain to make a race interesting.

Edit: Hamilton and Bottas out of the points? Makes for a perfect race weekend from my POV. Can't wait to read his whinging.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Can we modify the regulations to require rain at more grand prix races? Verstappen won despite making five pit stops. Of the seven cars retired from the race, only Ricciardo's Renault suffered engine failure. The other six were due to crashes as the tricky conditions were unforgiving for driver errors.

Way back in 2008, Sebastian Vettel won a race in the rain for Toro Rosso. Daniil Kvyat's 3rd place today was only the second podium finish in Toro Rosso team history, even going back to their 1985-2005 incarnation as Minardi.

Standings after eleven of twenty-one races
407 409 Mercedes (out of 484 possible)
261 Ferrari
217 Red Bull / Honda
70 McLaren / Renault
42 Toro Rosso / Honda
39 Renault
36 26 Alfa Romeo / Ferrari
31 Racing Point / Mercedes
19 26 Haas / Ferrari
0 1 Williams / Mercedes

223 225 Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes (out of 286 possible)
184 Vatteri Bottas, Mercedes
162 Max Verstappen, Red Bull / Honda
141 Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari
120 Charles Leclerc, Ferrari
55 Pierre Gasly, Red Bull / Honda
48 Carlos Sainz, McLaren / Renault
31 25 Kimi Raikkonen, Alfa Romeo / Ferrari
27 Daniil Kvyat, Toro Rosso / Honda
22 Lando Norris, McLaren / Renault
22 Daniel Ricciardo, Renault
18 Lance Stroll, Racing Point / Mercedes
17 Nico Hulkenberg, Renault
15 18 Kevin Magussen, Haas / Ferari
15 Alexander Albon, Toro Rosso / Honda
13 Sergio Perez, Racing Point / Mercedes
5 1 Antonio Giovinazzi, Alfa Romeo / Ferrari
4 8 Romain Grosjean, Haas / Ferrari
0 1 Robert Kubica, Williams / Mercedes
0 George Russell, Williams / Mercedes

P.S.: Both Alfa Romeos received 30-second penalties for soft clutches at the launch of the grand prix.

13 cars running at the end and still Williams can't get a single point.
