Does my pick answer this question? I hate picking against the Colts--since they are my team, and they could surprise--but I think 200 wins is a big milestone, it's a prime time game, and Patrick Mahomes is still QB for KC.

As for other picks, I also hate picking the Pats, which is why I'm giving Washington the same "pick against" coloring that I give the Dolphins, which is really where this pick comes from. I also like Arizona getting their first win against the Bengals, and I like Philly at home.

For games to watch, Indy vs. KC should be good, as should be Green Bay vs. Dallas, with both teams coming off their first losses of the year.

FiveThirtyEight likes this week's Thursday night game (Seahawks & Rams) as the one between the best teams that is close to a 50/50 proposition and that has the greatest impact on whether or not the teams make the playoffs.

53 Points? I know some of those were scored by Houston's defense, but that's a major strike against Dan Quinn and Marquand Manuel.

The Broncos and Cardinals got their first wins of the season, which also means first wins for new head coaches Fangio and Kingsbury, respectively. The 'Skins, Bengals, and Jets (and Dolphins) remain winless after 5 weeks.

SNF EDIT: That one one of the best games I've seen, at least from the Colts. This team just does not quit, even when they're 10-11 point underdogs. Bye week next for them, followed by a game against Houston. Go Colts!

MNF EDIT: Again, the Browns are still the Browns. Don't get too hyped about the 9ers juuust yet. While they are doing a lot of good, they are coming off an extended bye week and playing at home. If they do this next week against LA, then you can start making bold proclamations about them.

Speaking of Rookie QBs, I thought #6 Hodges did a great job stepping up when Mason Rudolph was KO'd in the Pittsburgh/Baltimore game.

None of the full-time head coaches that Dan Snyder has hired in the past 21 years has had a winning record with the Washington Redskins. That includes experienced good coaches like Marty Schottenheimer, Mike Shanahan and Joe Gibbs.

Dan Snyder has never hired a head coach. He only hires 1st assistant coaches, which explains the years of Redskin misery.

Whether they have set course to "Tank for Tua", "Suck for the Duck" or "Bomb for Fromm", the Dolphins certainly seem focused on drafting a franchise quarterback in the next draft. They've already sold off nearly all of their veteran talent. There are other terrible NFL teams that may soon come around to the same plan and trade away their veterans before the trade deadline in exchange for more draft picks. We've seen this for decades in MLB and the NBA, but it's only more recently that the NFL has learned to tank.

It makes for better sports radio or TV to argue that there's some huge uncertainty in the decision (remember Peyton Manning vs. Ryan Leaf?), but reports say that the Dolphins are pretty focused on Tagovailoa as their potential savior.

Having said all of that, this may be the week that the young players left on the team go off of the front office’s plan and the Dolphins actually win a game,

Week 6

Thursday Night Football 10/10
New York Giants at New England Patriots

Sunday, 10/13 in London
Carolina Panthers "at" Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Sunday, 10/13
Washington Redskins at Miami Dolphins
Philadelphia Eagles at Minnesota Vikings
Houston Texans at Kansas City Chiefs
New Orleans Saints at Jacksonville Jaguars
Seattle Seahawks at Cleveland Browns
Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens
San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Rams
Atlanta Falcons at Arizona Cardinals
Dallas Cowboys at New York Jets
Tennessee Titans at Denver Broncos

Sunday Night Football
Pittsburgh Steelers at Los Angeles Chargers

Monday Night Football, 10/14
Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers

I'm basically picking against the AFC North this week, aren't I? I'm sure the Browns will be playing with a chip on their shoulder, but I don't feel like they can knock off the Seahawks, even at home. I also pick the Chargers over the Steelers, mainly for the 3rd string QB, but LA also need to step up before getting erased from the AFC West race entirely. I should probably do the "pick against" thing for the Jets, but they are getting their #1 QB back and are on an extra week of rest...I still think the Cowboys take that one.

As for games to watch, obviously my first choice is Washington/Miami...if only for a few minutes or to see some drunk fan storm the field. For more serious suggestions, Lions/Packers should be the best prime time matchup, and Eagles/Vikings should be very important for both teams. As a personal choice, check out Texans/Chiefs. I really want to see what KC does to improve after their first loss, but this is also a good gauge for the AFC South. Houston and Indy are tied right now, and seeing how they each handle one of the best teams in the AFC West should be informative.

Oh, and if you're keeping track of year-over-year improvement, the 49ers just matched their 2018 win total, the first to do so in 2019. The Raiders are close, too, only being 1 win short, while the Cardinals need 1.5.

The Dolphins' #1 overall pick in the 2020 draft just barely survived a close scare when the Redskins were in Miami today as Fitzmagic almost led Miami to a comeback win. Chris Grier's plan still faces significant hurdles remaining in week 9 (hosting the Jets), week 14 (in New Jersey against the Jets), week 15 (in New Jersey against the Giants) and week 16 (hosting the Bengals).
The most improbable part of Miami's comeback is that Fitzpatrick's two touchdown passes were the first points the Dolphins scored in the second half all season. Miami's offense generated few cheers from the half-empty stadium until the end, and remained on pace (at 8.4 points per game) for the lowest-scoring 16-game season in NFL history . Miami has been ahead for only 3 minutes, 49 seconds (out of 300 minutes) this season.

Tennessee Titans 0 at Denver Broncos 16

Sunday Night Football
Pittsburgh Steelers 24 at Los Angeles Chargers 17

Monday Night Football, 10/14
Detroit Lions 22 at Green Bay Packers 23

The Cowboys lose three in a row to screw up my picks for the week! The loss marks the Jets' first 2019 win, and Adam Gase's first with the team. We also saw KC drop their second loss of the season (in a row) to another AFC South team. Houston moves on to play Indy next week. The NFC west got very interesting this afternoon, as the 49ers proved that they are for real, beating the reigning NFC champs on the road. The Rams drop to 3-3 while SF and Seattle are nearly tied with 5 wins each. Those two teams will face each other on Monday Night football in Week 10.

And I know Jay Gruden was a particular situation, but Dan Quinn's Falcons are really falling apart, sitting at 1-5 among the worst in the league. If anyone else is getting canned mid-season, it's probably him, and the Falcons should be careful in handling that, since they'll also want to preserve draft position and snag the best coach early (assuming they do fire Quinn).

Fitzpatrick was just making a case to be traded  At this point, that's the only reason a Dolphin plays well, right? Threatend Grier's plan for a trade or early retirement?

SNF EDIT: That's what I get for picking the Chargers, I guess...

MNF EDIT: Officiating didn't quiiiiiite turn that game, but it's certainly a stain on NFL officiating. Also, Green Bay's receivers are going to get an earful after that one. When Aaron is that accurate, you need to catch the damn ball...

Re: NFL 2019

It's been a few weeks, so we might as well do this again.

Week 6 - League Status

Going straight to the best-to-worst listing, though.

NFC West: 15-7-1 (.674)
NFC North: 14-7-1 (.659)
AFC East: 11-10 (.524)
NFC South: 12-12 (.500)
AFC South: 11-12 (.478)
AFC West: 11-12 (.478)
NFC East: 9-15 (.375)
AFC North: 8-16 (.333)

So the worst divisions in the league stayed the worst, and the best divisions stayed the same, more or less. Conference stats swung a little bit in the AFC's favor, but the NFC still has the higher win %.

ALL AFC: 41-50 (.451)
ALL NFC: 50-41-2 (.548)

The situation for new head coaches improved, though...mostly.

Matt LaFleur, Green Bay Packers: 5-1 (.833)
Kliff Kingsbury, Arizona Cardinals: 2-3-1 (.417)
Bruce Arians, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 2-4 (.333)
Freddie Kitchens, Cleveland Browns: 2-4 (.333)
Vic Fangio, Denver Broncos: 2-4 (.333)
Adam Gase, New York Jets: 1-4 (.200)
[Reference-Only] Bill Callahan, Washington Redskins: 1-5 (.167)
Zac Taylor, Cincinnati Bengals: 0-6 (.000)
Brian Flores, Miami Dolphins: 0-6 (.000)

ALL New Head Coaches: 14-32-1 (.309)
Minus Arians and Gase: 11-24-1 (.319)

Give me a few weeks to figure out how to deal with Callahan's position. I'm not sure if we should track him with Gruden's record (0-5), on his own (only 1 game so far), or not at all, but it is sort of a narrative. Excluding him, though, new coaches fared better in the last three weeks, notching 9 more wins and raising win percentage across the board. Flores is still stuck with the tanking dolphins, but it really looks like Taylor is joining the race to the bottom, Qualitatively, Fangio strung his first two wins in a row, and Gase's Jets look much better now that Darnold is back.

Thursday Night Football 10/17

Sunday, 10/20
Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills
Jacksonville Jaguars at Cincinnati Bengals
Minnesota Vikings at Detroit Lions
"Oakland" Raiders at Green Bay Packers
Los Angeles Rams at Atlanta Falcons
Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts
San Francisco 49ers at Washington Redskins
Arizona Cardinals at New York Giants
Los Angeles Chargers at Tennesee Titans
New Orleans Saints at Chicago Bears
Baltimore Ravens at Seattle Seahawks

Sunday Night Football
Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys

Monday Night Football, 10/21
New England Patriots at New York Jets

Obviously I'm taking the Bills on a week of rest over the tankers, and the 49ers are also an easy pick, but not as much of an anti-Washington pick. Callahan might inspire his players to suck less, while I really believe in the 9ers after they handled the Rams in LA. Speaking of the Rams, I think they easily handle Quinn's Falcons. They need a win at this point, and the defense in Atlanta seems hopeless. My last two picks are being made with much less common sense. My Colts are playing to take the lead in the AFC South after their bye, and I can't help but pick the Eagles after Pederson called his shot against the Cowboys.

And that brings us to the hardest question: what game(s) should we watch? There are too many! KC/DEN are on a lost 2/won 2 streak, MIN/DET is a crucial game and a chance for the Lions to bounce back after Monday's heartbreak, and NO/CHI and BAL/SEA should be close games between likely playoff teams. And I almost forgot the battle of first round QBs, with the Cardinals traveling to New Jersey! Unless you're stuck watching the Jags and Bengals, you should have something good to watch.

The biggest toss-up of the week involves the surging Texans and the surprising Colts, in a game that could have big repercussions for the AFC South. Houston has the advantage under center with Deshaun Watson playing like a superstar, and we currently give the Texans a 63 percent chance to win the division (compared with 29 percent for Jacoby Brissett and Indy). But if the Colts win at home on Sunday — and we give them a razor-thin edge — Indianapolis would suddenly become AFC South favorites, with a 47 percent chance (compared with 44 percent for Houston). It’s not outside the realm of possibility: Brissett has played surprisingly well this season in relief of the retired Andrew Luck, rising to No. 18 in our Elo QB rankings, and the Colts last knocked off the Kansas City Chiefs before a bye last week. Either way, the time for Indianapolis to make its move is now. The Texans could effectively put the South away with a win here, grabbing an 84 percent division win probability and knocking the Colts’ playoff odds down to about 1-in-3.

Biggest playoff implications: No. 9 Philadelphia at No. 12 Dallas (-1.5), 8:20 p.m. ET Sunday

Best QB duels: No. 3 Russell Wilson (SEA) vs. No. 9 Lamar Jackson (BAL); No. 6 Dak Prescott (DAL) vs. No. 8 Carson Wentz (PHI); No. 1 Matt Ryan (ATL) vs. No. 16 Jared Goff (LAR)

In the NFL, you are only as good as your back up QB...so last night might be very bad for the Chiefs.

If there's any good news for KC, Andy Reid is good at developing QB talent, and he has a few extra days to prep Matt Moore--the only uninjured QB on his roster--for next week's game against the Packers. Although, keep your eyes peeled. If Mahomes' injury seems more severe, the Chiefs might make a move for a veteran backup.

Best-case prognosis after dislocating a kneecap would likely be to return in December after their bye week. Worst-case would be to miss the remainder of this season and some of the next.

7 road teams won today, including big wins from Baltimore and New Orleans. The Cardinals win three straight to surpass their 2018 win total, while the Chargers lose their 5th after losing only 4 in 2018. Most importantly, the Colts take the lead in the AFC South with a big win against the Texans!

That's nine teams with a less than one in thirty chance of making the playoffs according to CBS Sportsline. That differs from Five Thirty Eight's projections, which like the Jets more and the Chargers less.

Chicago is a hot mess. More Montgomery and less Trubisky, please!

And the Seahawks... forgot their coffee or something. Starbucks is losing a golden opportunity here!

Watch for trades...Fitzpatrick is screwing up Miami's plans, and that team has a former first round QB in backup. Trubisky's lack of development is really hurting the Bears, and the NFC North is damn competitive right now. Their best shot at a playoff berth might be a wild card, but they need to win a lot of games just to keep pace with the Vikings, Rams, Seahawks, and Panthers. If they lose next week to the 2-5 Chargers, their season is pretty much over.

Actually, keep an eye on both of those QBs for possible fits in KC, too. The Chiefs have 2-win lead over the Raiders, but that could disappear quickly, and they need to consider playoff seeding with Indy and Baltimore heating up. A first round bye could make a world of difference if they expect Mahomes to return and carry them.

A few thoughts

1) I don't get the whole Tanking for Tua thing. When has the last time an Alabama QB has done anything in the NFL? And what does Tua do that makes anyone think he'll be the first?

2) I'm glad the Packers are 6-1 with wins against all the division teams, but its been a somewhat lucky 6-1. They should have lost to the Lions. if the Bears had even tried to score they would have lost to the bears. Some letdown is likely. However, I like our chances of winning the division.

3) I thought Watson was the best QB in the draft. I thought Trubisky would be the 2nd best. I was wrong.

Statistically, Tua Tagovailoa’s first half of this year’s season surpassed Joe Namath’s entire career at Alabama. He‘a a better passer than Kenny Stabler, too.

Yet, and who would have seen this coming a year ago, Jalen Hurts' year under Lincoln Riley likely makes him a much better NFL prospect than Tua.

Don't get too hung up on "Tank for Tua" as a phrase. It's really just a catchy term more than it is a firm strategy. The Dolphins just want the #1 pick so they can choose the best option out of the solid-looking 2020 class. They aren't the only team looking for a franchise QB, and they need to protect their draft position so a team like Washington (who theoretically have their franchise QB already) don't sneak in and steal that pick for another desperate team.

Week 8

Thursday Night Football 10/24
Washington Redskins at Minnesota Vikings

Sunday, 10/27, In London
Cincinnati Bengals "at" Los Angeles Rams

Sunday, 10/27
Seattle Seahawks at Atlanta Falcons
Denver Broncos at Indianapolis Colts
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Tennessee Titans
Arizona Cardinals at New Orleans Saints
Philadelphia Eagles at Buffalo Bills
Los Angeles Chargers at Chicago Bears
New York Giants at Detroit Lions
New York Jets at Jacksonville Jaguars
Carolina Panthers at San Francisco 49ers
"Oakland" Raiders at Houston Texans
Cleveland Browns at New England Patriots

Sunday Night Football
Green Bay Packers at Kansas City Chiefs

Monday Night Football, 10/28
Miami Dolphins at Pittsburgh Steelers

So while Andy Reid is pretty good at making QBs better, the Pack started their offensive momentum last week, and Matt Moore's best showing probably isn't enough to outscore Rodgers. I also like the Lions and Colts at home against struggling teams. And, of course, I'm picking against the Dolphins. This one could have some extra brutality since the Steelers are getting the extra bye week to prep. Good for "the process", I suppose. My risk pick of the week is New Orleans. FiveThirtyEight have them as 12.5 point favorites, but I get the feeling that the Cards will play better than that. Good for an entertaining game, though.

There should be some good games going on, too. Carolina coming off their bye against the NFC's undefeated team looks good. Bills/Eagles pits a struggling Philly team against a solid defense. And I don't know if it will be "good", but Chargers/Bears might be worth watching. Those are two promising teams that just have not made it happen.

Player D: 35 catches, 305 receiving yards, 2 receiving TDs

Player B is Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott, and Player C is Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton, but Players A and D are the same guy: Christian McCaffrey, who is engendering serious MVP consideration as he has carried the Panthers to a four-game winning streak.

The 2017 first-round pick has fielded more than 56% of Carolina's offensive touches so far while playing 96% of the offensive snaps. Though Kyle Allen has impressed since taking over for an ailing Cam Newton, Allen has thrown only six passes for 26 yards without his star halfback on the field.

Would the combination of Elliott and Hilton be worth an MVP? I'll get into a longer discussion about McCaffrey's MVP chances when I file my midseason awards ballot in a couple of weeks, but McCaffrey is on pace to approach nearly 2,500 yards from scrimmage over a full season. I don't think I would say either Zeke or Hilton are having particularly great seasons by their own standards, so while the combination of the two is pretty impressive, McCaffrey probably has to be the best rusher in the league before he attracts significant MVP attention.

You could make a strong case for Dalvin Cook as the league's top runner this season, leaving receiving out of the equation.

Player A: 52.3% completion percentage, 4.2 yards per attempt, 9.2% INT rate
Player B: 50.8% completion percentage, 5.0 yards per attempt, 7.8% INT rate

Player A is quarterback Nathan Peterman, who was badly overmatched in his four starts with the Bills from 2017 to '18. The fifth-round pick posted a passer rating of 32.5 on 130 pass attempts; when you adjust for era using Pro Football Reference's index statistics, Peterman is the second-worst quarterback in the history of football with 100 or more pass attempts.

Player B isn't really one player; it's the collected line of all the quarterbacks who have faced the New England Patriots' defense this season. Those quarterbacks have combined to post a passer rating of 35.6, just 3.1 points better than Peterman's mark. I get that the Patriots haven't played a tough slate of opposing quarterbacks, but they've still gone up against veterans such as Ben Roethlisberger and Colt McCoy and highly touted young players such as Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones. Bill Belichick's defense has reduced them to collectively performing about as poorly as the worst quarterback of the past 80 years.

Sunday Night Football
Green Bay Packers 31 at Kansas City Chiefs 24

Monday Night Football, 10/28
Miami Dolphins 14 at Pittsburgh Steelers 27

Adam Vinatieri made it when it mattered, and my blood pressure still feels a little high. We also saw Drew Brees return and pick up like he never even had surgery. With that performance and Bridgewater still available, it makes the Saints the best team in the NFC...were it not for the 49ers, who dropped 51(!) against the Panthers, remaining undefeated after 8 weeks and 7 games. I still like the Saints, but if the 9ers keep it up, they'll be in control of the conference.

SNF EDIT: as expected, Andy Reid knows how to make a backup QB work, but it wasn't enough to out-duel the Packers.
