HOLY CRAP LUCK JUST RETIRED!

Sat Aug 24, 2019 8:44 pm

Andrew Luck retired, and I can't even link to ESPN because the entire website crashed around the same time.

Good news AMD fanboys! In honor of this stunning announcement, we here at Intel are canceling next year's GPUs.

That's technically an NFL 2019 thread, and since Luck won't be playing in the NFL in 2019, I think it deserves its own thread.

Really sucks for Colts fans. I wonder, is he now responsible for paying back a portion of his signing bonus based on a fraction of however many unplayed years?

I think this is another outstanding example of why a max per-player salary should be implemented league-wide.

It may not seem like it with all the playing time he has missed, but I believe he is beyond his initial contract.

Vets are still often given signing bonuses; it isn’t just rookie contracts.

A quick google search says that he has 3 years remaining of a 5-year contract, and was given a 32 million signing bonus this time around. He should be on the hook for 3/5ths of that, or roughly 19.2mil, minus whatever credit for going through training camp and a partial preseason.

LMAO! I pulled him off my pre-draft rankings 30 minutes before the draft and then got busy and forgot to come back for the draft :-?

Okay, the resident Colts fan has had a few days to process. I don't think we're in bad shape. Brissett might not be as good as Luck, but he's been okay so far, and what Ballard has been doing to the roster should be good for most NFL QBs. Our season isn't DOA; we're just underdogs.

But in the meantime, I think we really need to pay Jacoby. He's only on contract for this season, and for a low cost of $2 mil. If he proves he can start in the NFL, he'll hit free agency with huge value, and we could end up in a bidding war. I'd get him up to at least $4 mil for this year as a starter, and get a midrange price for 2020. Basically, give him a "prove it" contract in the short term so--assuming he's good in 2019--we can negotiate a better long-term deal in 2020 to keep him in Indy (and also we won't be screwed if he flounders).

There aren't many QBs available at this point, so if we're looking for crazy options, we might be able to get Eli Manning for cheap. His issue in Jersey was his O-line. Stick him behind one of the best in the NFL with a solid receiving core and he'd be just fine.

I wouldn't want Manning as a lame duck QB unless you think he's going to win you the Super Bowl this year, which he isn't. I agree that resigning Brissett to a cheap 2-year deal wouldn't be a bad idea. If he does exceptionally well this year, it would save you a good chunk of change for Year-2. It also then requires him to play well in the 2nd year to get paid.

Clearly my exorbitant bank salary and your equally exorbitant regulatory examiner salary are just shy of being able to accomplish this feat.

There’s really no sugar-coating the Colts’ 2019 prospects. Ballard’s options are unpalatable but clear: Try to win now with the team he’s assembled and risk being trapped in a purgatory of mediocrity while the cheap talent ages out of their early contracts, or front-load the pain and tank this season in an attempt to secure a high pick in what looks to be a promising quarterback draft class.
Tanking for Tua?

Is most of that data based on the 4-11 season? Because that isn't great frame of reference. That's like using the Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly years as the baseline for Kaepernick. Or focusing entirely on Kirk Cousins' "record against winning teams" without examining the teams he was/is on. Most QBs have bad stats when their teams are bad.

Still, I see the dilemma. My hope is that we drafted/acquired enough talent that we have trade options if we need to. I wouldn't shoot for #1 overall (thatsbait.gif), but we might have a good enough system to draft and develop someone (or trade and develop someone else's first round QB).

Or maybe this guy? I still think Elway should have kept him in Denver with a large humble pie, but that's a different discussion. He wouldn't be a bad option as a backup, or even as a "compete for the job" guy.

EDIT and PS: The NFL 2019 thread will get updated tomorrow with Week 1 schedule, since there are ~30 more teams worth talking about.

Yeap. If QB salaries keep going up, expect to see more of this in the future. If you've got $100 million in the bank, why risk any sort of permanent injury? He's already set for life.
