College Football 2019

Mon Sep 23, 2019 5:35 am

Four weeks into the season, we're starting to get a feel for which teams are contenders vs. pretenders.

1. Clemson (4-0)
2. Alabama (4-0)
3. Georgia (4-0)
4. Louisiana State (4-0)
5. Ohio State (4-0)
6. Oklahoma (3-0)
7. Auburn (4-0)
8. Wisconsin (3-0)
9. Florida (4-0)
10. Notre Dame (2-1)
11. Texas (3-1)
12. Penn State (3-0)
13. Oregon (3-1)
14. Iowa (3-0)
15. California (4-0)
16. Boise State (4-0)
17. Washington (3-1)
18. Virginia (4-0)
19. Utah (3-1)
20. Michigan (2-1)
21. Southern California (3-1)
22. Central Florida (3-1) - first regular-season loss in three years!
23. Texas Agricultural & Mechanical (2-2)
24. Kansas State (3-0)
25. Michigan State (3-1)

The Gators at my alma mater are probably ranked higher than they should be. They'll be 5-0 at the beginning of October when they face against #7 Auburn, #4 LSU, South Carolina and #3 Georgia.

I loved seeing UCF get kicked out. That's now 2 losses in the last 5 games. Their fans are so annoying.
Georgia is looking really good right now.

Alumni as well and I agree. The remaining schedule is much tougher. The early schedule included a couple universities, Towson and UT-Martin, that I've never even heard of before.
Anyway we'll see if Trask is up to the task.

Kyle Trask looks pretty good for a backup QB pressed into service. It's Florida's offensive line play that's scary. Auburn's defense is no joke (#10 in the nation according to ESPN).

Battle of the defenses. Our home field advantage was enough to give us the edge.

When we all saw Kyle Trask's leg bending in ways that it should not, I feared that the Gators' season might be over, but they managed to upset the Auburn Tigers and remain undefeated to set up this week's matchup against an even more impressive opponent.

Tua Tagovailoa had "tightrope" surgery on his high ankle sprain this morning. Alabama is hoping that he can make an exceptionally-fast recovery to be ready to play against LSU on November 9.

Florida Atlantic's coach Lane Kiffen got fined $5,000 for this humorous (and appropriate) tweet:

This video will undoubtedly lead to memes about when the wheels fell off of some teams' seasons, but Oklahoma is still rolling.

Woot! Iowa State Cyclones back in the Top 25 after taking care of business for the last several weeks.

And would someone beat Baylor already? They're not that good! They fell backwards into a few of those wins.

The game of the year certainly lived up to the hype. Joe Burrow looked unstoppable again.

P.S.: Amazingly, three of the sixty-two Associated Press voters believe that Clemson (who has played zero top-25 ranked teams this season and was only a failed two-point conversion away from losing to North Corolina) is the best team in the country. LSU has beaten FOUR top-t10 teams this season (Texas, Florida, Auburn and Alabama).
Seth Walder, ESPN Analytics wrote:
LSU ranks first in Strength of Record and it isn't close. An average top-25 team would have had just a 1% chance to be undefeated thus far against LSU's schedule. Meanwhile that same team would have had a 16% chance to go undefeated vs. Ohio State's schedule, the next best. Among the undefeateds, Clemson had it easiest: an average top 25 team would have had a 29% chance to be 10-0 at this point against the Tigers' schedule.

Last week, Alabama needed Tua Tagovailoa to play well to give them a chance against LSU. This week, Nick Saban's team could easily have crushed Mississippi State with Mac Jones at quarterback instead of risking Tua's health.

There are people in this world -- poor, misguided souls -- who believe there are too many bowl games. They think having a 6-6 MAC team and a 7-5 Conference USA afterthought duke it out in a city that can't possibly have a stadium where football is played is somehow a bad thing. They think that, as we continue the sad, steady march toward a time of year when there will be no more college football that, of all things, we should have less of it now. They think that, in the land of 106-ounce fountain sodas and a Cheesecake Factory menu that reads like War and Peace, we shouldn't all enjoy more of a good thing.

Repeat after me: There is no such thing as too much college football. That being said, we've got 40 games to watch, so get your popcorn ready and let's draw up a road map from the least entertaining (note: We're not saying "worst," because they're all good) to the most entertaining.
I'm one of those misguided souls.

It's a shame that Disney (ESPN) has pushed the college bowl schedule to its current state of ridiculousness.

It has been a rough bowl exhibition season for the Big12 conference (which has had 10 teams since Colorado and Nebraska left in 2011):
