NFL 2020

Sat Apr 04, 2020 10:29 am

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/289 ... -need-know
The NFL has added two wild-card spots. There will now be three wild-card teams in the NFC, and another three in the AFC, for a total of seven playoff teams per conference. The resulting six wild-card games will be played in back-to-back tripleheaders during wild-card weekend, this year on Jan. 9 and 10. The No. 7 seeds will play the No. 2 seeds in that round, meaning that only the No. 1 seed will get a first-round bye. That seems like a big deal for the No. 1 seed. Yup, and a pretty bad deal for the No. 2 seed.

Bill O'Brien has taken flack for what's arguably the worst move of the NFL offseason, trading away DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals as the Houston Texans took on David Johnson and his remaining contract, an albatross for a running back in today's NFL. O'Brien finally had a chance to explain why he would trade arguably the best wide receiver in football with little return.
"I would say the deal with Arizona was a deal that we thought was in the best interest of our team," O'Brien said.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/bad- ... the-price/
The Texans and Rams, foolishly, made blockbuster trades for young players – giving up a bounty of picks the likes of which are rarely seen in this league – without having anything close to an extension hashed out with the players involved. And now it has created a logjam for others teams looking to secure their own talent into the future, and coupled with the desperate situations these two franchises find themselves in, and a global pandemic, could create a prolonged cooling period in several critical markets.

The Texans traded two first-round picks and a second-round pick for Laremy Tunsil, a very good left tackle but not one considered in the top five in his position. They did so, recklessly and ridiculously, without having any sense of the young man's price point, heaping unchecked leverage to his camp. Then Tunsil went out and stayed healthy, played good football, and now the Texans find themselves completely splayed out at his mercy during contract talks.

Exactly as everyone around the league expected.

Don't know how I feel about this. If they want more playoff games, I think they'd get more mileage out of a losers bracket. Obviously a loss takes you out of Title contention, but a few additional rewards and cross-conference play could make for interesting football and some meaningful mini-bowl games.

On behalf of the rest of the AFC South, thank you, Bill O'Brien! I really hope Chris Ballard made an offer for DeShaun Watson...just to see if BOB was that dumb.

As a Colts fan, I'm mixed on the Rivers signing. I love getting DeForest Buckner, but Jacoby Brisset was okay (ish) last year (until he got his left guard dropped on his knee), and we still don't have a clear future at QB for 2021 onward. Maybe Ballard has an idea to steal a developmental QB in the draft, but only time will tell.

In the latest battle of Bill O'Brien versus any conceivable or feasible notion of draft pick value, the Houston Texans fired off one of their last remaining selections to not solve their self-created problem, trading for wide receiver Brandin Cooks. Even if Cooks returns to his prior form, the Texans seem to operate in a vacuum in which there is no concept of what the other 31 teams are doing or thinking. This trade is an admission of failure from the Los Angeles Rams. It's a flailing response to failure for the Texans.

Regarding wild card expansion -- will this increase or decrease the probability of the playoffs identifying the truly best team in the league?

The issue is that at some point, if you dip down too far, you start pulling in crappy teams who could only win by luck. That would reduce the probability that the playoffs identify the truly best team. It's akin to model overfitting / chasing noise in statistical analysis.

I'd love to see a fivethirtyeight analysis of this.

edit --

I'm also wondering, does this favor some teams' style of play over others? For example, do more wild card games favor explosive offenses over solid defenses? As a Chiefs fan, I'm hoping it favors the explosive offense (and that's a strange sentence to type for somebody who really loved those 90s 13-3, out in round 1 Chiefs teams)

It gives a bigger advantage to the #1 seed, which you would expect to be the best team. It increases chaos for the rest of the playoff field.

True, but to identify the best, don't we also implicitly need to identify the second best?

Hindsight 2020: The Colts are paying Phil rivers $25 million for a 1-year deal, while Aaron Rodgers--whose team just drafted his eventual replacement--is due $21.6 million in 2020 with the contract stretching through 2023.

Like, I know Aaron probably wants to stay in Green Bay, but he's a much better upgrade over Rivers, would give the Colts more time to figure out their long-term QB plan, and Rodgers would be added a beefy roster with a defense on the rise.

Anyway, at least we picked up someone to mentor today. Hope Eason gets a good education this year.

It may be that losing Joe Brady and Teddy Bridgewater to the Panthers in the off-season still stings a bit.

Notable update on the upcoming season...That Team That Plays in DC might be getting a name change. I'd place this at 99% probability considering FedEx and Nike are pressuring Snyder & co. to do it. Within that, maybe 25% possibility that the team plays 2020 without a mascot, logo, or nickname, just going with "Washington" for a year so they can put some real thought into new branding. More likely, IMO, they go with a name like "Redhawks" or "Redtails", which would easily keep the current color scheme and would be reminiscent of [that other name].

We're also starting to see what a COVID season will look like. I personally am curious to see what companies like Nike and Riddell do for PPE. Feels like a perfect opportunity to try full-face shields on helmets and "athletic" masks to be worn during play.

I'm also curious about how teams--consciously or not--will change up their play. If stadiums are mostly empty, do players get more or less precise? Will players commit less to defense to reduce "social" contact? Would that make 2020 a high-powered offense kind of year?

Apparently the League was just waiting for me to post something before dropping more major news. Namely that Patrick Mahomes will (officially) be a Chief for life. Well technically it's "just" a 10-year deal (he'll be 36 when the contract ends), but this probably ends up being less about making Mahomes the highest paid QB, and more about locking in the "Chief for life" status. I'm not seeing any details yet, but I suspect it will alleviate some of their short-term salary cap woes while offering guarantees in the longer term.

The NFL has already halved the 2020 preseason, canceling its fourth and preschooler game. The Hall of Fame Game has been canceled. The 2020 season is still running ahead of schedule, but will it really be without a hitch or will covid continue to chip away at the -19 pandemic year?

I basically called it!

I had it at a low probability at the beginning of the month because I felt they were a little farther along in the change process, or that things would move quickly to scrub the old. That was clearly NOT the case, and sandwiched between then and now was the story about sexual harassment within the organization... Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I'm hoping the "team with no name" is the intermediate step to get Dan Snyder out. Boost the short-term value for a sale, then the new owner can focus on improving the value by announcing a the finalized name.

NFL 2020 Season: The Pandemic Season

In four days, the NFL begins it's 101st season amidst the worst pandemic since WWI. It's going to be strange, to say the least, but hopefully we can enjoy some football while we're stuck at home.

Week 1

2020 Kickoff Game, 9/10
Houston Texans at Kansas City Chiefs

Sunday, 9/13
Philadelphia Eagles at Washington Football Teamers
Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots
Green Bay Packers at Minnesota Vikings
Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville Jaguars
Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions
Las Vegas Raiders at Carolina Panthers
New York Jets at Buffalo Bills
Cleveland Browns at Baltimore Ravens
Seattle Seahawks at Atlanta Falcons
Los Angeles Chargers at Cincinnati Bengals
Arizona Cardinals at San Francisco 49ers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at New Orleans Saints

Sunday Night Football
Dallas Cowboys at Los Angeles Rams

Monday Night Football, 9/14
Pittsburgh Steelers at New York Giants
Tennessee Titans at Denver Broncos

Still going to try picks despite everything going on. Keeping it simple in week 1. I like the Chiefs at home and in most situations, but at home following their Super Bowl win against the Texans? Easy (hopefully). I am a certified Phil Rivers skeptic, but the Jaguars appear to be following Miami's lead, and Indy beefed up their defense in the off season, so I'll take my Colts in Week 1. Last pick is the Ravens over the Browns. I'm not sure exactly what to expect from the Ravens after their spectacular crash against the Titans, but the Browns are still the Browns, and John Harbaugh is a good coach.

The most interesting matchup, IMO, is Sunday Night Football with the return of Mike McCarthy against the 2018 NFC Champions. Two teams that have failed to live up to expectations setting their 2020 tone in prime time. Hope it's good. I'd also keep an eye on the Cardinals, who started doing some interesting things on defense toward the tail of last season. If their defense really is ready to play and the offense starts to click, they could be very interesting this year. Plus, they're facing off against the current NFC Champs, and we all remember how the 9ers ended their 2019 season.

Green Bay Packers 43 at Minnesota Vikings 34
Indianapolis Colts 20 at Jacksonville Jaguars 24
Chicago Bears 27 at Detroit Lions 23

Monday Night Football, 9/14

Tennessee Titans 16 at Denver Broncos 14

I am so glad we picked up Phil Rivers. It makese so much SENSE  Okay, it WAS a divisional game in the Florida heat with no pre-season. There's still time to fix things, but it's a sour start to the season. Glad to see the Chiefs pick was good (and easy), but really happy that it was a good game. Gave me hope for a fun season. The Ravens pick was easier than expected as the Browns are still the Browns.

Open question on Da Bears:

Can David Montgomery single-handedly save them from Trubisky?

Cheering for my #32, but not sure this season goes any better than the last with the same QB at the helm.

So far, so good, for week #1, but we'll see...

Chicago fans...

Mitch Trubisky just led your team to the best comeback (down by 17) that you've had since 1998 to get a win over a division rival by throwing three touchdown passes in the 4th quarter.

Sure, the Bears were stupid to trade the number. 3, 67 and 111 picks overall, as well as a 2018 third-round pick during the 2017 NFL Draft to move up one spot to select Trubisky, passing on Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson. At least they didn't spend all of those picks to select Nathan Peterman.

Monday Night Football, 9/21
New Orleans Saints at Las Vegas Raiders

This week, I'm taking the 49ers in a bounce back game, the Chiefs as a reliable pick, and the Cardinals as the wild card. I really think Arizona are doing good things on defense, and not enough people have clued into that yet, so with another year of experience under their belts, I like Kingsbury and Murray over Rivera and Haskins,

Other good games should include Bills/Dolphins, Cowboys/Falcons, and Vikings/Colts. The Bills are looking to set their season up right by going 2-0 in the division, while the Dolphins risk 0-2. Everyone else mentioned are trying to shake off the week 1 funk with a perfect opportunity to change the narrative. Saints/Raiders also has potential. Maybe we'll get a Monday night shootout.

Well this was Injury Sunday in the NFL. No word yet on what the final damage will be, but the 9ers appear to have gotten the worst of it. The Giants also (likely) lost Barkley for the season, and a bizarre, last-minute injury to Tyrod Taylor put rookie and 6th overall draft pick Justin Herbert into a divisional matchup with the Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes. The Chargers lost, but only barely. I'd give it a couple of weeks to see if and how teams game plan for the rookie, but if he holds up, the Chargers might be in good shape.

I probably should have mentioned this sooner, but we have some coaches in hot seats, and things might get hotter after today. The Jets have continued to be a mess under Gase, but giving up an 80-yard rushing touchdown on the first play of the game is just embarrassing. I don't know what the Jets should do, but burning everything to the ground seems like a net positive right now. Speaking of embarrassment, how about Atlanta? Held a strong lead over the Cowboys until they didn't, scored 39 points overall, but still LOST. McCarthy gets his first win in Dallas, and Quinn is still haunted by XLI.

That brings us to Matt Patricia. I saw someone point out this week that Jim Caldwell was fired after a 9-7 season, while Patricia's overall record is 9-24-1, and that isn't a fair comparison. The fair comparison is using Caldwell's overall record of 36-28. So the question is, does Matt Patricia get to 28 L's, or does he get fired sooner? The Lions face the 2-0 Cardinals next week before hosting the Saints, so the job won't be getting easier any time soon.

Chicago Bears at Atlanta Falcons
Carolina Panthers at Los Angeles Chargers
New York Jets at Indianapolis Colts
Dallas Cowboys at Seattle Seahawks
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Denver Broncos
Detroit Lions at Arizona Cardinals

Sunday Night Football
Green Bay Packers at New Orleans Saints

Monday Night Football, 9/28
Kansas City Chiefs at Baltimore Ravens

Bumping the picks up to 5 this week. First off, I think the Colts will continue the Jets' string of misery. Next up, I like a pair of NFC West teams. The Lions and Cardinals tied in Week 1 2019, but I think this meeting ends very differently. While the Cowboys started to show promise, I think we let Russ cook them up in Seattle. I'm also picking the Chargers after they showed up against the Chiefs, holding the reigning champs back as well as any team could. We could see a Herbert slip, but the Panthers are in rebuild mode and just lost CMC. Final pick of the week is just following teams trending in opposite directions. It feels like New Orleans missed their chance (or had it interfered with), while the Packers are still in pretty good shape. Granted, the Saints will be looking for the bounce-back win at home in prime time, so hopefully it will be fun to watch.

Speaking of games to watch, I think Bills/Rams will be good, or at least informative. The Rams have handed out a couple of beatings while the Bills seem like a pretty complete team. This will be one of the first real tests for each of them. I also think Bears/Falcons could be good. Quinn & co. really need to notch a win, and they can do it against the Bears...then again, the Bears aren't just going let them have it. Best matchup of the week has to be Monday Night Football. Super Bowl MVP versus League MVP, and two of the best overall teams in the league facing down in Baltimore. Here's hoping it's a classic.

Wow! Heckuva ending to that game in Seattle! We also saw a lot of good stuff in Buffalo (as expected) as well as in Arizona, while the Falcons wrote another chapter about collapsing after having control of a game. There are 6 teams at 0-3 right now, but Atlanta's record must feel the worst. Oh, and Eagles and Bengals decided that neither of them were going to 0-3, so they ended with a tie.

Joe Burrow looks pretty good for a rookie in his first three NFL games, but there's a reason that the Bengals were picking #1 overall - they're not a very good football team in a number of areas (especially when Mixon and Green were hurt). Also, LSU looked decidedly more human this weekend without Burrow and the twelve other Tigers who were drafted into the NFL. (K'Lavon Chaisson, Justin Jefferson, Patrick Queen, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Grant Delpit, etc.)

The 49ers have won two weeks in a row in New Jersey, but they've got a ton of key starters out with injuries after those two games.

How about that Nick Foles comeback today?

I'm keeping an eye on the turf in New Jersey. Apparently SF asked for an investigation, and the NFL said it was fine. It is possible that it's a fluke, but if injuries continue to happen...

Here lies the Mitch Trubisky era of the Chicago Bears...again? Or maybe it's just a ploy to keep Nick Foles technically in a backup position, since that's where he seems to play his best football

Something I failed to mention earlier, but if the Colts didn't score any points on offense today, they still would have beaten the Jets 16-7. It's been a long time since Indy had a really good defense. Here's hoping they keep it up.

I am so loving Allen Lazard's story at Green Bay. The kid was a fantastic receiver at Iowa State, statistically and eyeball-test, one of the best, all time. Yet he went undrafted, because... Iowa State, I guess. Nobody could really figure it out.

He made the practice squad at Green Bay last season, then got cut, then got brought back onto the practice squad. Because of injuries, he got pulled up, but was sitting on the bench, last year. Finally, frustrated with the receivers who were playing, Aaron Rodgers asks for Lazard, because they had developed a good working relationship in practice, and the rest is history. They keep delivering big play after big play together (a lot like Lazard, or Al Catchino, did at Iowa State).

Lots of people in Green Bay were saying it was a mistake to bring him up and he didn't have what it takes to be a #2 receiver. And here he is playing like the #1, through hard work and patience.

Steelers at Titans: POSTPONED

A COVID outbreak among Tennesse Titans players and staff has resulted in the first postponed game of the Pandemic Season. The Minnesota Vikings--who hosted the Titans last Sunday--are also locked out of their facilities, but they have not reported any infections at this time.

Week 4

Thursday Night Football, 10/1
Denver Broncos at New York Jets

Sunday, 10/4
Baltimore Ravens at The Washington Football team formerly known as the [REDACTED]
Los Angeles Chargers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Seattle Seahawks at Miami Dolphins
Minnesota Vikings at Houston Texans
New Orleans Saints at Detroit Lions
Cleveland Browns at Dallas Cowboys
Jacksonville Jaguars at Cincinnati Bengals
Arizona Cardinals at Carolina Panthers
New York Giants at Los Angeles Rams
Buffalo Bills at Las Vegas Raiders
Indianapolis Colts at Chicago Bears

Sunday Night Football
Philadelphia Eagles at San Francisco 49ers

Monday Night Football, 10/5
Atlanta Falcons at Green Bay Packers

Postponed, MOVED TO WEEK 7
Pittsburgh Steelers at Tennessee Titans

Postponed, Date/Time TBD
New England Patriots at Kansas City Chiefs

Let's keep our fingers crossed that no other teams get a COVID outbreak this week...and maybe for some luck with picks. As much as they got beat on Monday, I think Baltimore bounce back this week against the team with no name. I also think the Rams get their bounce back win against the Giants. From there, I am making the painful decision to pick against the Eagles. I like Doug Pederson, and that team has done a lot with what they have, but they have been struggling since their Super Bowl win, and things have only gotten worse without Saint Nick. Despite the injuries in SF, I think the 9ers win this one. Less risky is picking against the Falcons. They do have the potential to show up, and I suspect they will at some point in the season (barring an abrupt firing), but this game is in and against Green Bay. Finally, my riskiest pick is the Seahawks over the Dolphins. The Seahawks are without a doubt the better team, but they are traveling a long way East into Florida heat and humidity. Hoping they pull through, though.

The top game on my watch list is Colts/Bears. I really wanted to head back to my old stomping ground and see this at Soldier Field. At least it looks like it will be good. The 3-0 Bears postpone their QB woes, and my Colts are sporting one of the best defenses in the league. Patriots/Chiefs should also be good, and you could see lots of sparks in Vikings/Texans. And I guess Broncos/Jets could be fun to watch if you aren't a fan of either team and are playing some other game. Maybe we can make BINGO cards!

EDIT: PIT/TEN moved to Week 7, NE/KC also postponed due to Cam Newton's positive test result.

How about them Cowboys  I was busy building desks and rearranging rooms, so I missed the whole early window and that was a funny surprise. I did get to watch most of my Colts game. Really loving that defense. I'm still not sure the offense is a huge upgrade with Rivers, but it doesn't really matter when we play defense like that.

Since last update, Pats/Chiefs got bumped to Monday Night. It is still being broadcast on CBS, so it's technically not Monday Night Football, but we do get a double header (assuming you East Coasters want to stay up late). One thing I'll be curious to see is ratings. ESPN has been struggling with MNF for quite a while, and this week creates an unexpected competitor with a non-cable network.

As some thoughts, the NFC East is now sitting at 2-12-1...and one of those teams will be hosting a playoff game. Meanwhile, the Texans are possibly the worst 0-4 team. Sure, KC, BAL, and PIT, but the Vikings were not allowed their regular practice this week, the Texans were playing at home, and they STILL lost! Their next 3 games are vs Jacksonville, at Tennessee, and vs Green Bay. If they don't beat the Jags, I can easily see an 0-7 team jettisoning B.O.B. out the airlock.
