Well ask yourself this question- if the public didn't fork out billions every year so that these guys could get paid millions every year, where would they be instead?

Sports isn't about education or character, it's about athletic ability. It's a form of entertainment, and entertainers get paid to fill seats, whether they are upstanding citizens or "thugs" when they're off the clock.
A most unfortunate, Freudian, double entendre is that hotel named "Budget Inn."

Not all are thugs, some are morons, some criminals and some are mentally ill.

No. All sports stars that the media reports on are thugs. Unless the media is reporting about something nice they did, but that doesn't make money for the media, so it's rare.

Sports stars are just regular people that happen to be good at a sports. Take a cross sections of the general population and you'll find plenty of @holes, rapists, cheaters and what not. Sports stars are no different it's just that regular people don't make the news. Case closed.

That's pretty disappointing but this is an area where you'll probably find what you go looking for.

When Peyton Manning was with the Colts, people called proudly him "Mr. Indianapolis". People here LOVE the $#!+ out of their Colts. The dude was viewed - and by some still is - as mini Captain America in terms of physicality and virtue. The kind of guy you felt good to root for and to have represent you (because, you know, yay sports.) You may have even known someone whose kids had to stay at the Peyton Manning Childrens Hospital at St. Vincent. Yeah, the guy was fined for "taunting" a while back and is almost a has-been. All I'm saying is that, no, not all sports stars are thugs.

Pretty much this. Think of it this way: if an NFL roster has 53 active players and there are 32 teams, that makes for 1,696 players BEFORE anybody gets hurt, and that doesn't account for practice squads. In short, I think we have to expect 15-20 guys getting in trouble every year, and all the handwringing over how terrible these people are vs. the broader public is an activity reserved for judgmental turds that need to fill their lives with other activities.

Just sayin' (See? That does make everything better).

It's easy to understand the correlation. Football is a high-aggression, physically violent sport. It takes a certain personality type to do well in that sort of environment, and it's generally the same personality type which is prone to off-the-field issues.

Change sports?

Try finding "thugs" in hockey.

The thugs, asshats, and the generally stupid tend to get a lot of attention because those things make for better headlines. There are a lot of professional athletes who are nice people; and a lot who are incredibly generous with charity work, not just with money but with their time.

In short, they're people; and like any group of people if you take a cross section you're going to find good and bad. The difference is, they get a lot more press coverage.

Yep the media isn't usually going to write a story saying "sports star has a heart of gold". It won't get a lot of readers/viewers. Even regular non-sports/celebrity news is mostly about bad stuff.

On that note, how many of you read Humans of New York? It's quite interesting, and it's basically the opposite of the mainstream media's focus.

Anyone have any good stats on crime rate by occupation? Given how much crime rates vary by other demographic factors (age, gender, ethnicity, income, geographic area, and so forth) it would be incredibility odd if it didn't also vary by occupation. Especially since many occupations have strong correlations with other demographic factors that have higher or lower crime rates.

Unfortunately, a quick GoogleTM web search doesn't offer much along these lines. Plenty of info about which occupations have crimes occur to them, like taxi drivers are the most likely to be murdered, police offers the most likely to be assaulted, and so forth, but not the other way around.
Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent. The competent use violence well before last resorts are necessary.

If violence isn't solving your problems, then you aren't using enough of it.

Occupation of the offender isn't one of the datapoints collected in the FBI Uniform Crime Statistics, so the data simply doesn't exist.

I don't know of any data about that but most NFL players would automatically fall into one of the highest crime rate groups (young men).

I don't doubt that there are higher incidents of "impulse" crimes like assault, theft, and so forth simply because - in addition to being young men - they're in a occupation that demands that you be a high energy, low inhibition sort of person.

But the original question was are all sport stars thugs, and frankly the answer is "No."

Joseph Randle was the starting running back for the NFL's Dallas Cowboys (with a modest $587,200/year contract worth $2.35 million) when he got arrested for shoplifting underwear and cologne at Dillards. Astonishment that someone making over a half million dollars a year (and about to cash in on endorsements since his promotion to the starting position) would shoplift from a department store prompted my original post in this thread that was recently raised from the dead by a spammer.

Randle has been arrested five times in the past year and a half. Here's the latest: https://sports.yahoo.com/news/wichita-p ... --nfl.html

Short answer: Yes most of them are. Long term answer: We should ban most sports.
