Photography topics

In conjunction with the forum reorg, which has been in the planning stages for awhile now, Alex and I were having a discussion the other day about where to put photography and camera threads. So I've created this poll to get some input from everyone since there are multiple forums that such threads could go into.

I'm leaning towards creating a new forum since all the threads could be in the same place. Thoughts?

I think its a good idea to have its separate forum instead of the mobile one..just a bit less confusion i would think.

5 to 0 to 0... Looks like a landslide! "Unanimous gerbil outpouring for a photography forum" could be the headline

I suppose I should have added an "other" option. So if anyone has other ideas, I'd love to hear them.

I dont know what to say on this topic . There isnt alot of interest in photography on the forums now . having a forum just for all things photography might generate some interest or it might be dead like the matrox forum used to be all the time .

We do seem to have a fair number of "what digital camera should I buy?" questions. Plus there is the long running photography thread. I know we have quite a few people in the forums that have photography as a hobby.

I just had a thought on this: we could make the forum include all forums of image editing plus graphic design questions. I know pete_roth has had a few questions of that type lately. Perhaps it would attract more such topics.

i think if you include all things do to do with images . image editing , graphic design , film and digital photography like you said it would see a fair amount of traffic . if its digital photography only i think its to narrow of topic .

Could we make it a sub-forum? not a forum on the main forum page, but a subforum of the back porch?

Yeah, give digital photography its own forum. There's an awful lot of discussion that can go on in reference to this bit of the market, and it'd be easiest for us, and for the newcomers, if it were all in one neat, tidy forum.

We already have (or will have) an HTPC forum to cater to that hobby, so we may as well cater to us photography buffs as well.

Unfortunately, phpBB doesn't do sub-forums. At least not in the default install.

I don't like subforums. They got lost and people miss them. At least I do.

Thumbs up for that one. Even Ars that see a much heavier traffic with regards to photography doesnt have its own forum for it, and like the matrox forum here a pure photoggraphy forum would probably be underused. But something like the audio/visual fora that has all audio video would be good.

I think it's a photo forum is a good thing.

I do have some reservations over images post size and forum load speed though. I say this because I never visited the old photo related thread much as it had so many 60K files of sunsets that hadta load (and this in spite of a request to keep sizes down).

I'm wondering if TR has the resources to store large, <100k, uploaded files in one area then link, complete with thumbnail, to the forums post.

With that system in place the thumb loads for viewing when you click on the forum yet you can click on the link if you'd like to see more detail.

Sounds like the photography forum is morphing into a Digital Visual Arts forum. Come to think of it, fora for the DIY crowd in music, photography, and art (photoshop) would be a splendid idea.

Ooh! That's even better. An A/V forum would probably see enough traffic to be worthwhile. My only concern is how much stuff would we steal from the existing "Echo Vale"?

I suppose there could be some rules in place, however, I think large images would be a worthwhile price to pay. From my experiences with phpBB, the rest of the page loads first, followed by the images, so one could still read the thread as the images load.

You'd have to talk to Damage about that, however, I don't think it's really feasible at this time.

Damage would probably do it, provided we move the photo forum into the contributor forum

I'm all for the photo forum, photography of all sorts! :)

I think we should have guidelines for actual posting just in this forum for images and stuff. Such as, since it is a photo forum, larger file sizes (provided you host them yourself) are okay, larger image sizes (dimensionally) are ok etc etc...

I think there should be some limitations on image sizes in the photo forum, as overwidth pages in phpBB look really ugly and they destroy the margins for the entire page.

According to this poll (which is kinda old) most people use 1280x1024 seconded my 1024x768.

Maybe we should just put up a poll in the new photo forum and come up with a consensus as to the most comfortable maximum image width based on what resolution most people use to browse.

I think that an A/V wouldn't be as good as a "digital media arts", in the sense that I agree that it might steal some stuff from echo vale. If we could just use it for photography, graphics, and the ocassional video option, that would probably be best.

Also, with regard to image size, I have personally found 800x600 to be the best when posting. On my laptop, which is 1280x800, I always have Trillian open, docked on the right side of the screen, so it's more like 1024 pixels wide, and when you add in the left frame with the user's information, 800pixels is just about right for filling up the rest of the available window.

I have been into several boards and I observed photography forums always generate traffic...that at least is my experience. I'd been a photo enthusiast myself eversince I bought a digicam.

Having a photo forum here would be great however you call it—digital visual arts, digital media arts, photography, audio/visual fora etc...

(please excuse my poor use of English language, I'm from Asian region and it is not my mothertongue)

A multimedia forum would also serve well in the futute. There's a reason that Adobe paid three and a half billion dollars for Macromedia...dynamic images coupled with sound and interactivity is where it's all going.

I'd really like to see a new forum for photography, maybe a kind of multimedia one which could encompass Macromedia/Adobe stuff (and others) and photography stuff. Although would that include Flash / Dreamweaver etc.. as well?

Seconded! If it's digital media arts, then we can drop all movie/picture shooting there without touching X-fi's at all.

What will happen to all those funny videos back at the back porch i wonder though. The TR videos tread seems to be a failure in the end...

EDIT: Or it could be called "Digital imaging"

You could restrict image hosting to contributors. I wouldn't mind contributing financially to a respectable website to post images rather than go to a free site and register my email address. (Spam anyone?)

If file sizes are limited to 100K or less, I don't think bandwidth would be too much of an issue on the user end. How much bandwidth can TR handle anyway? Also, I think most people that peruse the forums here are fairly intelligent and will know that a photography forum will have image heavy threads.

I really don't think images should be larger than 400x600 if they're posted within the thread, if there is a pop-out though when you click on the image, it could be as large as necessary, or something.

Just my two cents.

There will allways be threads that contain images, but I bet most of them will be concerning 'best camera' choices, technical questions about CF, MMC, batteries, lens focal distances, f stops, fringing, vignetting and so on. So far these questions linked to examples outside TR.

I guess thread with images means alot as someone says a single image worth a million words....

Love the idea of an A/V forum :P

Love the idea of limiting image size to something reasonable - 1024*768, and linking to a larger image if necessary. Having to scroll to see an image is totally stupid.

I'm really glad this topic came up too :P
