phpBB 3

Sat Jan 19, 2008 1:02 pm

Subject to the results of some final testing today we are tentatively planning on upgrading these forums to phpBB 3 tomorrow afternoon. The forums will be unavailable for 3-4 hours while the data conversion takes place and we verify everything comes over in one piece.

I'll post an update when we have a finalized time.

3-4 hours of down time, eh? I should be able to manage the withdrawal symptoms for that long.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Here's hoping it comes with a blue theme. That tan thing is an abomination.

Is there a list of what will be different (if anything)?

Quite a bit of different stuff especially what the moderators can do. It should help cut down on spam. If you have smoky back room access go take a look there. If not your just going to have to wait.

The thread merge feature will make me very happy. It'll take some time to get a good handle on all the new mod controls; phpBB3 actually logs the use of mod controls so I can undo what I've done if I goof.

The biggest thing I like is all mods can move threads. That will make dealing with spam pretty easy. I dont see much point in the friend foe thing but some people will probably use it. The new look is different better or not i havent decided yet.

The thread merge thing will be nice on the porch as many duplicate threads as get posted there.

Not everything that's new will be enabled, but that list breaks down pretty much everything that's different.

Well it looks like there's more template/theme customization available. And subforums.

Purely from a user's perspective, lot of features look useful/nice -- post drafts, better query options -- but what's with no HTML in posts? How are we going to post those URLs that have parens or other characters the [URL] BBCode tag barfs on? Or has that problem been fixed?

Wait, don't do it! No HTML in posts! If that's true, I'll have to edit a lot of posts.

Testing was delayed to today. It's looking like the data conversion takes more like 4.5 hours.

I'll be starting the upgrade at 4PM eastern. I expect data conversion will take until 8:30PM eastern and if everything goes well the forums will be available again between 9 and 10.

I shall sacrifice a PSU to appease the computer gods to make sure the upgrade goes flawlessly.

Well, looks like we are back up and running, the look could use some work, although the full widescreen effect is better.

If you're reading this, then the forum upgrade has been completed. A few notes while we get used to all the new features:

Blue Theme: There will be a blue/blue theme coming.

Report Posts: You are now able to report posts that are flagged for the moderators to look at. Please do NOT over use this feature. I'll be adding some new reasons for reporting posts in the next few days.

Please use this thread for all comments and suggestions for the new forums.

Enjoy! And let's hope it holds off the spammers for awhile.

Gah, I keep clicking the save button instead of submit. That darker black outline draws me to it.

Re: phpBB 3

gah, i have to delete a PM to receive new ones if my box is full? the old forums just nudged old ones out...

edit: OK, I can create a folder and set certain rules, but I can't set a rule on a folder to move to another folder; just if a folder is full to move old messages to a specific folder.

So if I have my Inbox and I have a folder called "old" I can move stuff from the inbox (or any other full folder) to a folder called "old" but I can't set a separate rule, that I can see, to move stuff from a folder called "old" to a folder called "older", and from "older" to "oldest" and then set the auto-delete on the "oldest" folder. Not a huge deal...I'll just let it work like it did the old way, thanks to Hoser pointing me to teh right place.
