So to recap, the takeaways are:

  • You need to have a GPU installed to get video out
  • You need to update your BIOS to a version that supports 3000 series chips
  • And to do that, you'll need to either get a loaner 2000 series chip or RMA the motherboard for one with the updated BIOS pre-installed
Main System: i7-8700K, ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-E, 16 GB DDR4 3200 RAM, MSI GTX 1080 TI, 1 TB CRUCIAL MX500, Corsair 550D

HTPC: I5-4460, ASUS H97M-E, 8 GB RAM, GTX 970, CRUCIAL 256GB MX100, SILVERSTONE GD09B

As an aside, I was just noticing that all of Microcenter's Ryzen 3000 bundles include an X570 motherboard. Looks like they're trying to sidestep this issue by steering people away from boards that might have an incompatible BIOS.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

How do I go about returning and getting a different motherboard as a replacement from Newegg? I have never done it before with them.

I believe that I might rather deal with AMD than with Newegg, but at the top right of the Newegg page, select "Customer Service" and "Return an Item" on the drop-down.

It would be easier to work with AMD than NewEgg? I am interested in what ever solution is the least complicate.

Okay, I just found this page on AMD's site regarding this issue. https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/pa-100

That was the link that I provided on page two. At least two of our forum members used the AMD loaner offer when Ryzen 2000 CPUs came out. Dealing with outdated BIOS versions is a drawback of supporting the same CPU socket for so many processor generations.

Darn it, I missed that link somehow. Thank you for all the help. I will review those options and get back to you when I am done working with support.
