System Guide query on "The Hybrid"

Thu Jun 11, 2020 9:44 pm

OK, short intro: had my 3770K system crap out on me after a torture test, so primary desktop dead. Triage imminent but, success or failure...don't really care.

You served well and I thank you. Live again as an awesome media box, or die well as a range target.

Anywho, I'm prepped for either and just may build another system no matter the fates choice.

My question mainly starts with the Corsair H115i Pro RGB (or its ilk):
Close system essentially, correct?
The big one, if anyone can confirm to some degree: can I put this in the ceiling of a Corsair 750D w/o issue? The two 140mm fans (or 3 version) would rock
that I-9 in the build config.

I'm good either way.

My plan is to get 32Gb of mem, I've got spare 1 and 2TB SSDs, and a 2080 Super waiting to go back in that box (Bobby Duck ref).

Just that stuff alone will only hit the 1.5K range. EVGA 750W PSU might need an upgrade and I'm fine with that as one of the things to not skimp on.

Quick verify that 2 Fan cooler stays out of the 5.25 by, and 3 fan version encroaches...only got a DVD/BluRay drive...so, no big deal either way.

thanks, y'all.

I'd stick with the 280. That should fit in the top of the 750D. It can support 3x120 in the top but not 3x140, and a 280mm rad should be fine for a 3770K.

Good to know, thanks.

Radiator is if I go with Hybrid's I-9 choice...Got the "Gaia" tower w/ two 120mm for the 3770K..does it quite well. Got that muddled a bit.

No worries, and yeah if the CPU is the only thing in the loop, then a 280mm rad would be good for the i9 9900K also. If you've already got 120mm fans and you want to go the AIO route, then I'd be tempted to look for something with a 240 or 360mm radiator just so you can use them. Either of those would fit in the 750D.

What's your primary use case? The Ryzen 7 3700X is about half the cost of the i9 9900K with the same number of cores, but tops out at 4.4GHz instead of the 5GHz for the i9 9900K.

Cool. I figured it'd work as I've already got 140mm at the back, 2 x 140mm at the front and 3 x 140mm on the top. Closer look and there is space above the 5.25 bay for a fan. :D

Right now it is casual/when I feel like it gaming (Batman Origins, GTA V, AC Black Flag), done a ton of Folding@home on that box (prolly explains the kaputness) and just whatever
else I need to do, like the 3 8TB arrays (bigger PSU might be on the menu, also).

Had this box's guts for 8 or 9 years. Got CPU from the fora for a song...so that'll give you an idea, as I bought $999.96 (according to 'egg) worth of parts to build around the CPU. Heh.

That 3.5 has been a rock solid 4.2 all this time, and as much as I've switched teams (GPU and CPU) I've found that I still love building systems, I don't want to futz with them too much.

Plus with the O/T I've done, and award and bonus for doing good things and outstanding EOY reveiw...I can spend a little extra and get a little more.

If the 3770K comes back to life, then I can take my time and play musical cases. :D

One thing for the OP to consider regarding the system guide -- it was written in January 2019. A lot has happened in ~18 months, so a system that made sense then isn't necessarily the best thing to get today.
Main System: i7-8700K, ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-E, 16 GB DDR4 3200 RAM, ASUS 6800XT, 1 TB WD_Black SN750, Corsair 550D

Was thinking more of "Round and Round" and "Here I go again" most likely.

Report: all went well w/ install, power, fans spinning...could not get video out of any outputs on the board, nor the 970's Displayport nor HDMI...Fiddlesticks, and other F-words.

Sent back, now on to the links see if I can get what I need. Last check the 3 x 140mm radiators were all out of stock on 'egg and 'zon. :|

We shall see what it is like this week.

Serious Business' Fractal Design Celsius S36 is 1151 compatible (if I read it right) and will have no issues with the Intel Core i9-9900K I plan to mount it to (correct?)
Aside: are there any 3 x 140mm versions of this or other? I keep looking a bit, but only find 120mm versions. Curious as newegg's filter tops out at 120mm x 3)

On that note, I still have Arctic Silver 5 and wonder if that will suffice for the build, or should I consider something else?

Memory: Looking at https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-64gb-288 ... 6820232092 (64G total) of DDR4-3200...should I go higher?
Is there a sweet spot for the board/cpu for overclocking. I ask because I've not had to futz w/it for almost 9yrs (and I hit the big five oh, blah).
2666 seems to be the "floor" and 4266 the "ceiling"...which way to I go? low/mid/high/highest?
(And, under the "Oh, God help me" I want load/activity lights on the modules and maybe start with 2 x 32Gb in case I need/want more, but the 64Gb and )

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Ultra out of stock (still), but the PRO WIFI edition seems to match in newegg's compare almost point for point and slight shielding diff.

All my brain can handle right now...got everything but the memory, but the rest is not set in stone.

rad/sync https://www.newegg.com/fractal-design-l ... 6835352030
PSU https://www.newegg.com/evga-supernova-2 ... MW3BC51007
(PSU 3 RAID arrays w/hot spares x 3, of course...dunno if that EVGA 750G2 many need upping too.)

I agree.

Just right now I'm at the point this *might* hit that curve where things are at their cheapest/optimal cost.

W/O memory, I sit at $1,196...damned if that's OK w/me.

Huge case, 1TB and 2TB unused SSDs, PSU that could muddle thru, so it is on the list of upgrades and lacking memory and looking at, I hope, under 400bucks.
I'm good with spending 400bucks more than my last major upgrade from almost 9 years ago. :D

If a new Guide comes out...I'd imagine it'd be fairly close, but would like an AMD/Intel back and forth, or the alternative or two (or 3).
Too much good hardware out there not to have options. Cripes, the 3 major categories could have 2 to 4 alternatives themselves (econo, mid, God box of old).

Whelp, all the parts arrived a day early, so "Yea!".

But, I just got a kick in the nuts with similar issues on the new board, memory and all that jazz, so on a whim I grabbed an old 650W Antec Earthwatts.

Fiddled around, plugged it in and WALLAH: Video!!! Fans Spinning!!! Memory's lights lighting up!!! (well, they did it before, but still) and then a BIOS menu!!!!

SON OF A BITCH!!!! EVGA PSU bit the dust it seems. Wow, just wow.

So, I fished the old board outta the trash and we'll see what happens when my 1K+ Watt PSU arrives (Sadly, another EVGA).

Ouch! That's an expensive way to find out you had a PSU die.

I'm sure the new one will serve you well, though.

Heh, yeah you're not wrong.

Gotta put the old one back together. New one is up and running, but don't think the 650W can handle all that and still
waiting on the 1.2KW PSU.

Got Win10 back and running, and did the install CD/DVD to get all the goodies. Pretty neat so far.

I think it also has Win7 drivers...might do a reinstall for grins and giggles if I can rebuild and update and keep it as a backup.

Wow, thing is pretty sweet so far, gonna redo steam and other stuff when I can get all the drives back up and running.

Not sure why you think you need a 1200W PSU. The 650W should be fine.

Normally a fair point, JBI, and you're right, but quick scrolling I seem to have forgotten some of the important bits w/power consumption:
I have 3 x 8TB arrays w/ hot spares (12disk in all), 3770K was 3.5Ghz @ 4.2..and two or 3 SSDs (piddly power consumption, yeah).

I'd upgraded from a 970 to a 2080Super. PSU was upgraded to the 750 G2...uhhh, about mid 2016 from what the 'egg tells me and
they had a faulty molex connector that prevented the system from starting up. 2egg review on that one I can't edit, but deleted.
Only had the Super since mid January...and last two months there've been minor issues that ramped up (progs quitting, access errors, occasional freeze).

I recall a power consumption calculator posted here or at ARS that I figure with the mix of SCSI (3?), SATA (2) and IDE (1 to 5...cheap IDE raid) and 4000 Series ATI
card, I needed a minimum 38Amps on the 12V rail. That 650 has 42, IIRC, and all that other stuff...prolly pretty high which is why the old 750 failed gracefully
(THANK GOD) but gave me heartburn.

Future-proofed, but not good enuf, so I got a 1200W, 90% efficient PSU and *HOPE* I don't have to worry!

Should not as it has 16 SATA connectors...I thought "yeah, that might do it". Good specs, but hoping for no *burns* getting another EVGA PSU.

:D

Cheers,

You must have at least an extra SAS/SATA controller with that many drives? A good controller for so many drives should support staggered startup, which would solve peak power draw from drive spinups. Some HDD datasheets give you the stead state and startup power draws. If anything, HDDs also use the 5V and 3.3V rails so you don't want a unit that pushes everything to the 12V.

Ahh, OK... yeah, that's a lot of spinning rust!

As Flying Fox says, if you can enable staggered spinup you should be able to relax your PSU requirements. The steady-state power usage is going to be way lower than what it needs to initially get all those platters spinning if they're all starting up at once.

"Spinning Rust"...I like that. :D

The Aorous board either hides the 3ware 9650's BIOS/start up, or just boots and brings it along...got everything going and still have one molex, and 4 6/8pin VGA cables.

Thinking of throwing the 970 in there for some folding with the 2080super. IF they can coexist, that is.

I did the stagger for an old 4X pcie RocketRaid 230X...plenty of power, but drive 0 kept dropping out when woken from sleep and alarming. Fixed now.

Now just gotta clone the hackintosh drive to SSD and life will be good. :D

Maybe see if the new board can do it. Was jealous some HP series lappys could boot from the disk and install w/ kexts being added. (Scooby "huruuuhh?")

If you figure for 10 watts per HDD you're overdoing it and well on the side of safety.

Just sayin'.

If it is the 9650se then it purportedly has staggered spinup. And Alt+3 seems to be the magic combo to get into the BIOS setup.

Well, so far, so good.

One issue I've needed to search: Sleeping system manually, it seems to resume directly to the BIOS.

I did the pwrconfig -h off to disable hibernation, no changes to sleep mode I'm aware of, but if that's wrong...someone tell me.

Also, searching my ass off for the best backup restore for Windows 10 Pro...I *DON'T WANNA* have to rebuild this SOB again.

I had the freebie ACRONIS from *way* back, but damned if I could find the download/activation I did over email, plus it is more of a Win7, but will work if Win 7 is the boot drive.
That is no longer an option, sadly. I could try, but I'm thinking z77 to z390 is going to be a kick in the nuts.

Recommendation on backup/restore w/least amount of pain are welcome.

How big is your system drive and how much stuff on it? The simplest is probably a full "baremetal" image backup. Apps like Acronis has that, or you can use the older style Windows Backup. You may be asked to create "rescue disk/disc" to let you boot into preboot environments for restoration, but I'm a bit hazy with details there.

However, I would say System Restore has come a long way, and saved me on a few occasions ever since Windows 7.

Win10, pretty new w/only 200G on the 1TB SSD. (Still not put office 2016 on it yet)

Thinking Acronis, too. Might do a quick attempt at using the Image app on the G703 as it made a nice USB boot/rescue and 5 .ISOs on the Synology Diskstation w/o pissing
and moaning like windows backup does (and fails, no less). See if I can install it. If not, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Couple of PM's and dang good suggestions.

Got a cheap as heck Acroins 2020 for a year...just need to get a rescue disk and net backup (both Synology's support, so YEA!!)

Many thanks for the alternative!

Windows 10/7 failed in miserable fasion...rescue disk was ok, backup to 10 and 50TB diskstations...blargh, (throwup noise)....WTH???

Dunno, but, yeah just going to try another route and see.

Well, found out PSU on the old system was the issue.
She is back up and functioning very well so far w/o issue on a 650W PSU, no RAID for now.

Bit the bullet and went with the Asus aorus z390, G36 waterblock, I9, and everything the old system had w/1200W PSU.

So far, so good since last update.
