In-place upgrade from WinXP64Pro to Win7Pro: Possible?

Wed Sep 16, 2015 10:16 am

As the title says; is it possible (after making a full system backup for safety) for me to in-place-upgrade my WinXP64Pro to Win7Pro? Hardware is as follows...
CPU AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition
MOTHERBOARD Gigabyte ga-990fxa-ud3 am3+
RAM 4x2GB DDR3 1600
STORAGE 2xIntel X25-M G2, Samsung 830 & 850 Pros
GRAPHICS XFX Radeon HD 7870
PSU SeaSonic SS-660XP 80+ Pt

I really don't want Win10Pro at the moment and I really want to avoid having to reinstall all my software, which, I do legally own and have all the disks. But really, I don't want to do all that over again.

We highly recommend that you print this tutorial. Your PC will restart during the Windows 7 installation process, so having a printed copy will help you follow the steps if you're unable to return to this webpage.

How...how do you print the video? :D

I think you need to go via Vista Business x64, then. I've done this on 32b versions and it does work, and the upgrade advisors are good enough.

Well, you don't have much choice in the matter. It's most of what kept me from upgrading until this past March.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Thanks, I thought this was the case and its why I've been dragging my feet since this spring.

There it is on page 6: "You'll need to reinstall your programs by hand after Windows 7 Installation is complete."

But I'm getting mighty tired of not being able to simply open Firefox without having to try several times and then open it in safe mode ever since I swapped in the new CPU. I thought I might fix that with this new motherboard and that just made it worse. Now it takes several minutes to boot up. There is some sort of driver or hardware issue that I just can't resolve without nuking the whole thing.

I'm sure not going to trust Windows Easy Transfer. But I don't really have to... I don't keep anything important on my boot drive, not even most of my programs. I have \Program Files and \Program Files (x86) on every other drive for my photography and office apps and games.

If you're asking about hardware compatibility, you're fine.

You have 4 SSDs? That's a lot of drives. What are their capacities? I'd take this opportunity to remove the X25s since they're probably pretty small/insignificant capacity. Reinstalling Windows and programs sucks (about 4 hours for me with Windows updates and such) but it's a lot easier/faster these days when you can install the OS with a USB stick, and your big data (movies/pics/docs/etc) are likely not on the OS drive. You skip all that copy time we used to have back in the day when single drive machines were the norm. Besides, I think it's good to reformat every few years just to clean out all the residual junk that gets tucked away in the corners and slows down the system.

512GB 850 Pro: OS is on this one just put in in place of an 80GB Intel when I upgraded the CPU and motherboard.
128GB 840 Pro: WOW, MS Office, Lightroom, some XP apps for my Respironics ASV (why I've kept XP for so long) and photos
2x 80GB Intels: mostly photos
Yeah, I actually have another 80GB Intel sitting around because only 4 of the 6 SATA ports can be used. The other two only support DVD devices. I guess I could repurpose the Intels to a couple of older systems and get a couple of spinning platters for my photography. Guess I can install VirtualXP to run the XP apps. That works OK on my laptop.
