Upgrade 6570 to ?

Sun Nov 13, 2016 9:38 pm

It may be time to upgrade a graphics card from a 6570 to something equivalent to a 7850.

Here's the system I built in 2011 to run Roller Coaster Tycoon; Link, and it has been working fine. Thanks to your help.

There is a new game, Planet Coaster, available on steam. It is a bit laggy on this system and the CPU usage does not appear to be an issue. The recommended specs are:
CPU i5-2300
Radeon 7850
8 G ram (satisfied)

What card would you recommend? I am hesitant to purchase a used card. With the recommendation, will I need a new power supply? Currently running an Antec 380W.

Thanks.

For the best driver support I'd snag a 460 or 1050 and call it a day.

7850 >> 6570, but is also rather old hat. It's the minimum card for that game too, so it would be sensible to look for a higher-performing one.

7850 is a $250, 130 W, 4.75 y.o. card (6570 is a $80, 60 W, 5.75 y.o. card.) so if you don't want used you will have to look for a newer equivalent.

The recommended card for that game is the (last-gen) R9 380, so that might be a good option (though it is 190 W), and its smaller sibling the R7 370 is basically a rebadged 7850 and so should be okay for the game. Getting the 2 GB version is not a very good idea, though.

Of the current generation, I think the RX 470 would be a good fit; the RX 460 looks a bit skinny on memory bandwidth versus the minimum spec 7850, so would be something of a risk.

As to power, 380 W isn't great but might still be okay, but I don't know what you have running off it. Do you have a meter you can plug into, to see where you are with your 60 W GPU and show what headroom you have?

Wow, based on the screenshots I've seen of that game, it looks like the graphical requirements are due to poor game optimization rather than actual high GPU demand, or that the developers mis-use the phrase "minimum requirements" like I've seen so many do on Steam. The 7850 runs Sim City 5 without flinching, which has much more complex graphics.

I vote RX 470, that card fits very well for your requirement.

The recommended graphics card for that game is a Radeon R9-380.  The Radeon RX-470 that Jigar recommended would be better than that.

More or less agree with Kretschmer - I would be concerned about how much longer a 7850 will be supported with driver updates. Something a little more modern would get you a little future-proofing.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

I would go for an RX470 if you can afford it. A GTX1050 if you cant.
Main rig: Ryzen 3600X, R9 290@1100MHz, 16GB@2933MHz, 1080-1440-1080 Ultrasharps.

I don't have the game so I can't confirm for sure but a lot of people on Steam discussion are saying the game is very CPU demanding (I know probably not what you want to hear).  It doesn't make good use of multiple cores though, so that is likely why you are seeing low CPU usage.  It just seems to need some really fast cores bases on what I am seeing.

You may also be GPU limited with a card that old however.
