Re: Ryzen to the occasion

Tue Mar 28, 2017 9:23 pm

Has anyone else built a new Ryzen system with 64GB? Just interested to see what kind of memory speeds everyone is getting...
I bought my memory 1st a week or so before the Ryzen release since memory prices had already started creeping up...

2x G.SKILL TridentZ Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000
(PC4 24000) Desktop Memory Model F4-3000C14D-32GTZ $439.98 ($219.99 ea)
Now Newegg.com is charging a whopping $100 additional for each pair.

Also, you don't need to be buying those 4x groupings... (which was selling for close to $600 when I bought mine) Buying 2 separate identical pairs at the same time got me 4 memory modules with consecutive Serial#s; which means they probably all came from the same batch of memory.

Back to my point: running 1 set of these 2 x 16GB for 32 GB total I was able to get run them at 2667 with v1.35 (set automatically when I selected XMP profile, but I had to bump speed from 2933 down to 2667 to get it to boot). Luckily, my Asrock Fatal1ty X370 Pro Gaming can run all four for a total of 64GB at 2667 @ v1.35 with 14-14-14-34 T1 memory settings. Curious if anyone has gotten 32GB or 64GB on a Ryzen system running at 3000Mhz or higher and if so how loose are the memory settings... If I have to loosen them much more than 15-15-15 or 16-16-16 I don't see much point in trying to push them higher, you start "robbing Peter to pay Paul" as they say...

For reference, the system I built last weekend:
Ryzen 1700 @ 4.0Ghz v1.392
Corsair H100i AIO(original version; been sitting in a surplus pile waiting to get used; bought for $89 on special 2 yrs ago)
ASRock Fatal1ty X370 Pro Gaming (Shed load of features, but my favorite is 16 power phases/60A; hopefully will beneficially with Ryzen v2 or v3)
240GB Sandisk Ultra SSD (boot drive)
Samsung evo 960 500GB (soon to be new boot drive)
5TB Toshiba X300
Cosair AX 1200
Powercolor R290 x 2
Rosewell Thor Case

You should do the opposite - keep stock clocks and undervolt. The difficulty and bragging rights are about the same.

I prefer to have my cake and eat it too! :)

I have my Ryzen 1700 OCed to 4.0Ghz with max v1.392 set in Asrock Bios.

I also have Performance plan turned on, but then set MIN Processor state to 50% or less (currently 30%)
so when the CPU isn't stressed: AMD Ryzen Master software shows it clocks as low as 1550/1600 and CPU v1.05 even at this voltage, with my browser and some other stuff running in the background Ryzen Master software is showing one core mostly sitting at 4.0Ghz

I WANT BOTH BOSS!!! Remember this one?

I'm still digging but there is a table somewhere that shows how max supported speeds keep going down the more memory you have. Dual-channel, dual-rank, quad-DIMM (which is what you need for 64GB right now) was going to officially top out at like 1866 or 2133 I thought, although overclocking is always an option. Getting 2667 with that much memory is quite a feat, from what I recall.

Best speeds I've gotten with a pair of 16GB DDR4-3000 DIMMs is 2933, which is close enough. :D

I still don't get why they haven't made Ryzen Master capable of installing on a fresh win10 install. o.o

I think the Creators update will fix that, along with the firmware update coming soon that was mentioned on the front page. Of course, you'll have to wait for a BIOS update from the board maker, but it'll get there.

Well, the creators update is basically here in Release Preview. Still no go. I don't know why it hasn't been fixed, but it seems pretty lame of AMD to release a tool that doesn't even work on its' intended platform.

It sounded like the firmware update was going to be required along with software. Just going to have to hang tight a week or so.

Well, I got the F4 build for my board installed. Funnily enough Gigabytes Windows updater failed every time and their UEFI updater apparently doesn't understand NTFS (which is funny, it being 2017 and all.) So even this simple thing was more of an adventure than you'd expect.

And of course I had to reset all the board settings for the processors built in TPM, SecureBoot, OS choice and everything.

I know it sounds like whining, but I'm really just amused. Hopefully this ends the 'beta' feel of things in general, cause yeah...even I'm feelin it.

Oh, and Ryzen Master still requires a signed driver it doesn't have. Maybe they will fix that later today, but honestly? Not expecting much.

I installed the F4 BIOS via QFlash and a USB thumb drive. 'Tis normally better to do it that way anyhow.

AGESA 1.004a allowed me to OC my RAM from 2400 to 2666 without a lethal amount of voltage (on stock voltage, actually) and it seems that in addition to having HPET disabled, I score better in the Passmark single thread test at the stock clocks than I do at 3.92 with the previous BIOS:

3.92GHz w/ F2 BIOS, DDR4-2400 and HPET on:

3.7GHz /w F4 BIOS (AGESA 1.0.0.4a), DDR4-2666 and HPET off:

Almost a 100 point difference in single threaded score while clocked lower.

Well hey they did fix Ryzen Master now.

Excellent. Not planning on eating any hats, but I'll take it.

You guys are having to do WAY WAY too much work to get things working how you want. I just could not put up with this crap. I sincerely hope you guys are happy with your purchases because I know I wouldn't be if I were you.

The real point is, nobody buying from this point on would have to put up with it. There's nothing left to put up with.

(Though I can't guarantee the UEFI settings won't get reset again.)

Sometimes it's fun to fiddle around with hardware configs and BIOS settings to find that perfect balance. However I had similar issues with Skylake/Z170 when that too was bleeding edge therefore it just takes some time for wrinkles to get ironed out.

Still, I feel sorry for anyone on Bulldozer especially if they built a Bulldozer rig within a few month of Ryzen.

I still find the UEFI conrols for SecureBoot on my board bonkers. I mean it's cool that it's customizable but I just want to click and say 'yep, it's on' instead of the confusion there, even if it's not terribly important.

On another note, Arkham Knight is actually smooth now that I have it redownloaded. Rock on.

The whole SecureBoot implementation was a cluster to begin with. Several years on, many UEFI implementations are still a train wreck.

My FM2 boards were pretty much set it and forget it with SecureBoot.

So I don't know why this is how it is but I hope I never have to set it up again.

(Even if it is just a minor annoyance.)

It's been an exercise in frustration. I'm not particularly happy and I am hopeful that my experience serves as a warning.

I'm extremely disappointed that basically every review on the internet has avoided this topic. It's been left to the end user to figure out and the tech press has largely failed its readers.
