Newegg shopping spree! I haz new goodies coming!

Sat Apr 22, 2017 6:19 pm

I'm bouncing off of the walls waiting for my parts order to arrive on Tuesday, am going a bit nuts tracking every movement of Fedex. I've been on the same i7 2600K/GTX 680 combo for nearly 6 years and am ready for a new machine. I really looked into Ryzen as an option, but couldn't bring myself to justify it as a potential long term, stable platform in case I'm unable to upgrade again for a long time. Once I narrowed the choice to Intel, then the choice was more cores, less clock, or more clock and less cores, basically. My spree budget allowed for a total of 3500, so the choice came down to 7700K/Z270 versus 6900K/X99+take a hit on the ram amount. I couldn't justify X99 this late in it's life with X299 so close and waiting isn't an option, so Z270+7700K it is. The rest of the choices should be pretty self explanatory.

Intel Core i7 7700K, retail
Asus Z270 TUF Mark I
Corsair Vengeance LED 32Gb (4x8Gb) DDR4 3200
Corsair H80i cooler
Corsair HX850i psu
Corsair 400C case
Corsair Gaming K70 LUX mechanical keyboard, Cherry MX keys
Corsair Gaming M65 PRO RGB mouse, 12000dpi
Samsung M2 960 Pro 512Gb SSD
Toshiba X300 6Tb HDD
Gigabyte Aorus Geforce GTX 1080Ti
ViewSonic XG2703-GS 27" 2560x1440 165Hz IPS G-Sync
Windows 10 Pro Retail (USB Edition)
2x WD 2TB Elements Portable Hard Drive USB 3.0 (for backup drives)

Basically a complete build from the ground up. Obviously of note is the lack of optical drive as the case does not support one, nor is one needed. Am in 2 day count down mode till Xmas in April! :p

Nice system you will be building. I probably will be doing another build in about three years.

Barring any issues, it should be one of the easiest builds I've ever done as well. The build it is replacing set a very high bar in both setup and longevity for this new build to meet, so we shall see :D

Kaby Lake has two memory channels. You would be better off with 2x16 GiB than with 4x8 GiB. PC4-25600 like G.Skill F4-3200C14D-32GVR would provide excellent performance, but you could save $92 if you gave up just a bit of speed to settle for PC4-24000 like F4-3000C15S-16GVR.

There will be no build changes. This is purchased and inbound already, and no, 2x16Gb would not have served my needs or wants better or I would have bought that. I bought exactly what I both wanted and needed there.

Let me add to the above, any SERIOUS errors I may have made in selection, please point out! Anything incompatible or known to be problematic, I will have to RMA anyway, so best to know ahead of time. However, let me please ask that people not suggest different parts for an already purchased machine that is literally 2 days away from my doorstep already, unless such errors are spotted in my choices. Heading off problems is appreciated, but short of that, I will not be made to regret my purchasing choices.

I was preparing to do the "internet forum" thing and post a predictable comment on how you obviously did everything wrong and chose all the wrong hardware.

The problem is, I can't really find a fault with your list, short of questionable taste in picking peripherals with lights on them :P

What JAE is saying is that 2 DIMMs may be easier on your processor's memory controller than 4 DIMMs, allowing you a bit more stability at higher XMP clocks.

Regardless, nice build.

If these were 3600mhz or faster DIMMs, I'd start sweating it, but as it is we're barely pushing DDR4 speeds at 3200mhz. I've never heard of that low a speed being an issue for 4 DIMMs unless you're just using crappy ram. Neither the motherboard nor the ram are low enough quality that THIS low of a speed should be a problem.

Before I scrolled far enough to see morphine's comment, I was thinking, "Wow, hell of a system. The only tiniest of nitpicks would be kb/mouse, which are of course highly personal."

moshpit, mostly cans for audio? Oh yeah, and congrats!
Be careful on inserting this (or any G34 chip) into the socket. Once you pull that restraining lever, it is either a good install or a piece of silicon jewelry.

That's going to be a sweet machine, and I think you made the right choice with the 7700k. I've been trying to remind myself I don't have any use for a 1080Ti, at least not with a 60hz display, but that just makes me want to replace that also. :)

I've been looking at a bunch of 1440p monitors like the one you bought. Please post your impressions about gaming experience on that Viewsonic when you get it all together, I'm looking forward to it. Hope the build goes smooth!

I recommend 2 sticks to start only because it's inevitable that more RAM will be added later in life. But hey, move 2x8GB sticks to another machine and toss in a 2x16GB kit when needed (maybe we'll have 32GB sticks by then, who knows). No harm, no foul.

Anyway, yeah. Nice system.
