Everything look kosher with this build?

Mon Sep 18, 2017 9:24 am

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/NZJYsJ

I've fallen on some extra cash flow and my credit score is back to where it was a year ago (I did some irresponsible spending early in the year) so I'm probably gonna pull the trigger on a new build within the month as long as nothing stupid happens (like another dang hurricane). I already have a keyboard, mouse, speakers, headphones, 2TB HDD, and a 1080p Freesync monitor which is the only reason why I'd buy an overpriced 4GB RX 580. Main uses are home studio audio production work and gaming, and I mostly play Overwatch and PUBG. I would like to get back into manual overclocking since my last experience with it was back in high school with my frankenstein Pentium 4 build, which is why I went with the 1600 instead of the 1600X. Think the 212 EVO is enough of a step up from the stock Wraith Spire cooler or should I spring for something beefier? I'm also wondering if the 2400-rated memory would be a hindrance to overclocking the CPU.

Thanks in advance, gerbils.

I've been very impressed with the Cryorig H7 cooler. It's worth a look.

Ryzen benefits greatly from increased memory frequency. Upping the ram to a 3200 MHz kit like this should provide a decent performance boost.

I would also recommend getting the fastest RAM you can afford and which is supported by the motherboard.

Also, remember to get a rabbi to bless your rig once you build it.

Main rig: Ryzen 3600X, R9 290@1100MHz, 16GB@2933MHz, 1080-1440-1080 Ultrasharps.

If you look into 3200MHz RAM, make sure you're getting Samsung B-Die chips. AFAIK, that's the only way to get to 3200MHz on Ryzen.

Ugh, full ATX......

I'll definitely get some faster memory then. I was just reading some stories from people who have gotten up to 4.1 GHz on the stock Wraith Spire cooler. Can anyone personally confirm this?

I went with a full ATX mostly because of the room that an ATX tower affords. My last build was a mini-ITX affair inside a Silverstone RVZ01 and it was a giant pain not just to build but to clean. Since I have a laptop and this build will remain under my desk, I don't mind the size. Plus having the extra PCI slots is nice, even if I never use them. Might want to add a sound card down the road with a good headphone amp.

Little side question, is it possible to buy a PCI card with Thunderbolt 3 capability? It seems that Thunderbolt is becoming the new standard in audio interfaces and I'd like to keep up with the times. All the interfaces at my school are UA Apollo Twins with Thunderbolt 3, and I'd love to be able to get one of those beasts at some point.

I do the System Guides around here, and I find no fault with that built, save for telling you to look at the GeForce GTX 1060 6GB instead of the RX 580 4GB you have there.

You can get a GTX 1060 6GB for $280 right now.

That's a better deal, except he stated he had a freesync monitor.

Trust me, I know it's the better card and if it weren't for the fact that A: G-Sync monitors carry a hefty premium over Freesync ones and B: I already have a Freesync monitor, I'd be all over a 1060.

On the flip side, do you think it would be worth waiting to see what Volta does not just on its own but to the market as a whole? Also, are there plans in the near future for AMD to release mid-range RX Vega parts? I really hate having to play PUBG on very low at 1600x900 just to get decent framerates so waiting isn't ideal, but if it's going to net me a much better deal or a much better card I can rough it out for now.

Oh, I missed the remark about the monitor. Carry on, then. I do have a different tip: Radeons seem to be starting to get back in stock. If you have the option, I'd wait a couple weeks to see if you can get the 8GB version of the RX 580 for a reasonable price.

On the flip side, do you think it would be worth waiting to see what Volta does not just on its own but to the market as a whole?

There have been zero rumors about Volta being released anytime soon. Your guess is as good as mine, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Not that I've heard of, and I'd like to point you to the absurd pricing of the RX Vega 56/64 cards. Even if you had mid-range Vega cards right now... you can't even get the better Radeons for a decent price to begin with :)

8 gb version for a small premium over the 4 gb you have linked:

..still not a great deal, but considering current pricing it's not horrible.

That's actually pretty good (in the current climate) for a triple-fan model. I'd take it.

I'm finding it very easy to clean the magnetically-attached nylon filter screens on the outside of the FTZ01S. Does the similarly-configured RVZ01 lack them or are the side panels not ferromagnetic? The filters can be purchased for $8 each.

I suggest micro-ATX as the best overall form factor. Consider the $92 -10MIR Gigabyte GA-AB350M-Gaming 3 motherboard and a mid-tower micro-ATX case with good filters and room for quiet coolers and/or radiators.

I've put together about two dozen Ryzen builds, 3 of which have not been work-related and I ordered 3200MHz DDR4 for those. One of the Ryzen 1600 builds and an 1800X build maxed out the memory controller at 2933MHz, but those were with four DIMMs. The other one was 2x8GB config and that ran at 3200 no problems.

The only R5 1600 I overclocked was the last one, using the Wraith Spire, and it wouldn't do 4GHz at 1.4V. I'm sure you could go higher with more voltage but I didn't want this thing to be noisy and [email protected] was probably at the stablility and noise limit, so I sent it off with my seal of approval at 3.8GHz/1.4V - it's not silent, but it's still pretty quiet even with the Wraith cooler.

Prices just went up a tad to make the difference even smaller for an 8GB card, so yeah I'll go with one. I saw a Gigabyte model going for $314, and the cheapest 4GB model right now is at $298.

I was looking at that board, but it lacks the Killer NIC of the K3. Call me a sucker but my internet is kinda bad so any help I can get to make it less bad I'll take. Ignoring that, the Gaming 3 has a Realtek networking chip. ew. My board from my i5-4670S build had a Realtek chip that constantly gave me problems, and when I upgraded to an H270/i7-7700 with an Intel chip all those problems went away. I haven't looked at ALL of them, but all the micro-ATX AM4 boards I've seen have a Realtek chip and I highly doubt any AM4 boards have an Intel one. So point me towards one with a quality networking chip and I'll make the switch. As for the RVZ01, yes the filters were convenient but my graphics card was still accumulating dust and it was a pain to get to. Had to basically take the whole case apart. I really didn't like that, for cleaning purposes or not.

3.8 is no joke, I'd be happy with that but maybe I'll win the silicon lottery and get a chip with more than typical headroom :) if not I can always add a big beefy cooler later.

Yeah, idk why I included the OS in there. I know better, I've gotten a legit Win10 key for $30 before and I've seen people get them for far less with some digging.

Other than the Gigabyte GA-AB350M-Gaming 3 mentioned above, the other micro-ATX socket-AM4 motherboard that appeals to me is the Asus TUF B350M-Plus Gaming, but I haven't spotted it for sale at my usual e-tailers.

My experience with Realtek NICs in recent times has been more satisfactory than my experience with Killer NICs. If the choice of network interface is the most important criterion for you, then consider one of these three ATX boards from Gigabyte, which all feature an Intel NIC:

Man, every time I look at my build the market for RX 580's has changed. The card I had selected either goes up in price or disappears from stock. Daily market fluctuations FTW. Right now there's an Asus Dual RX 580 8GB going for $295 on Newegg. I kinda wish I could pull the trigger right now because that seems to be as good as it gets, but maybe the market will do something more favorable by the end of the month (which is when I can confidently purchase).

Well it's hard to deny the judgement of a veteran gerbil like yourself. I guess for the sake of saving space, I'll give Realtek another shot. It has been several generations since my last build with a Realtek chip so maybe I should let go of my grudge. I guess it could have just been a buggy chip, or a bad year for them. In that case (see what I did there?), I'll go with the Fractal Design Mini C tower. I do have somewhat limited space in my bedroom and my desk is kinda small so I guess it's a good idea to shrink the build a little.

On that note, I'm going with the Define C line because of the noise reduction aspects since I work with microphones and whatnot. Would going with the tempered glass version give me a noticeably lower noise floor? I know glass is pretty good at noise dampening, but would it be better at that then the standard panel? I'm not really concerned with looking at my build since it's going to be sitting under a desk, so the question is purely noise related.

Keep in mind the TG version doesn't have the internal foam padding. I can't really tell you which one will be quieter, but my guess is probably "no difference."

So here's the latest build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bcv6JV

I seriously have to swap out the graphics card every few hours to keep up with changing stock and prices. Would it be wise to get some quality thermal paste or does it really matter when using the stock cooler? Or does the processor come with decent paste anyway? And if the answer is get some paste, is Silver 5 still the one to get or is that old news?

On MSI cards, if the Gaming X version is the same price at time of purchase, definitely go with that.

IMO, thermal paste selection is more of a consistency preference. AS5 may not be the "best" product out there anymore, but I do like it's work-ability. It's been a while since I've researched TIM.

See, that's exactly what I mean. That card was like $20 more just an hour ago. I thought the market instability from the mining craze was supposed to be over, what on earth is happening?

and yeah, I've always liked how easy it is to apply. I've used it on almost all of my builds and it's harder to get that nasty glue-like substance off of a stock Intel cooler than it is to apply some Silver 5.

So I did a little research and it seems that Noctua's NT-H1 is among the best all-around products. Silver 5 is still just as popular as it ever was though.

Of course I could always go with Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra. Looks like it's a PITA to apply but performance is off the charts. Doesn't work with aluminum though.

The SeaSonic G series has their S2FC fan control, which runs the power supply's fan at nearly-silent (22 dB) low speed at less than roughly one-half load. The SeaSonic Focus Plus series has S3FC fan control, which can be toggled to switch the power supply's fan completely off for totally silent operation at less than roughly one-third load.

The only other change that I would recommend for your build would be to get a higher-performing PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD like the Samsung 960Evo for your OS instead of the SATA M.2 SSD that you have on your current list.

If you're going for quiet, I'd suggest you pony up for a Corsair RMx series (RM650x or RM750x). I don't own stock in Corsair, I just have an RM750x and it barely ever fires up its fan. It's quite absurd.

That's a really cool feature and it's not that much more for the 550W Focus Plus. I'm sold. As for the SSD, I am considering going with the 250GB 960 EVO for about $30 cheaper. I have a 256GB Samsung NVMe drive in my laptop and the speed is crazy, even compared to my previous build which booted from a Crucial M500. I'm just at a crossroads in my mind of whether I want that boost in speed or the extra space for games. I also will need to get Pro Tools 12 pretty soon for school and as anyone who has used that hot mess of a DAW knows, it takes an EXCRUCIATINGLY long time to load. So I'm thinking a speedy NVMe drive could help mitigate that, and then I can just have my plugins on my HDD since I don't really use anything with crazy big samples or anything like that.

Seasonic G Series are pretty dated as far as hybrid fan operation is concerned (don't get me wrong, they're still high quality PSUs). Even the Seasonic XP series had full-off fan control (S3FC) back in 2012. That's something I looked for when I bought my EVGA 550 G2 which could actually operate fanless through a wider range of load than Seasonic. Seasonic has widened their fanless range to match in the Focus+ series. Some will say that if the fan is quiet it's not a big deal to have it running, for those people, most/all PSUs with hybrid fan modes will have a switch to turn off "fanless" mode. For me, it's nice gaming on my rig (in signature) without the PSU fan running, one less source of noise.

I'm pretty happy to see that the "Sweet Spot" sample build in the new system guide is almost a mirror of my planned build :) can't wait for purchase day.

EDIT: except for the graphics card selection of course.
