I think my last 2-3 builds have had the RAM costing close to (if not more than) the CPU. But then, given my use case I tend to value RAM size over raw CPU horsepower, and I also tend to buy ECC RAM if the system supports it. So it does not seem at all odd to me to spend a lot on the RAM.

Same here. 4 sticks of 16 gig unbuffered ECC RAM (..for multiple VM's). Almost 3 1/2 times the price of my CPU. :o

I remember when you could get the unbuffered ECC RAM in 16 gig sticks for as low as $81 around mid 2016.

LOL, it is $200 more. Granted a more able CPU but not worth the price e premium over the 1600X. If you can get a 1600x with motherboard and 16 gb 3200 for under the cost of that Intel combo then they are doing something wrong. Granted, it doesn't help that their availability sparked a price gouge sitting around the $399 mark.

If Ryzen 2 really is around Feb I think I'll wait. It gives me time to recover from taxes, holidays and other expenses. Hoping that Ryzen 2 will increase clock speeds without eating into manual OC territory. Would also like to see the base/turbo differential widen. When you see a 3.6 base and 4.0 turbo it doesn't seem impressive compared to Intel's 1.1ghz gain in turbo clock. Memory support/stability would be another nice thing to see from Ryzen 2.

I think it's just the Ryzen APUs, so more like Ryzen 1.5? 2 is supposed to be later in the year.

But hell, 1.5 might be awesome. I don't know.
Meow.

Ryzen APUs will be amazing because I can finally start to build basic office machines again with AMD and not worry about needing a discrete GPU. Raven Ridge isn't going to be useful for my own system though.

I went searching and the Jan timeframe for Raven and supposedly Feb for Ryzen "2" on that Samsung LP (12nm?). I'd think Raven would just be on 14 as they already have it being produced or planned for it soon. It would obviously be better on 12 LP for power savings and thermals since it's likely to end up in laptops.

Then again, I've done very little Raven Ridge research in the past few months. If you know better, by all means let me know.

I have a feeling that if you want a quad-core CPU with SMT, Raven Ridge will be nice if only to avoid cross-CCX talk. An unlocked APU chip that can hit 1700X clocks for ~$140 would be super interesting, and probably faster than the similarly-priced Ryzen 5 1400 since the Ryzen chip has to play ring-around-the-rosie.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.
