Talk me out of it!

Thu Oct 19, 2017 12:32 am

The Wednesday deal. MAN that is a cheap way to get into a "premium" Ryzen. I wanted the 1600x anyhow, they pretty much are giving you the motherboard for free.... Talk me out of it...

I mean the motherboard has quite a few bad reviews, I'm just curious how many of them are people who like to complain. Hell people complained about other Ryzen boards I've used for customer builds and all of those have been solid.

Never welch on a deal.

-sorry, couldn't resist.

If you want the Ryzen 1600x anyway, why the hell not? (..and that's the only thing I'd question here.)

I know, epic fail at your request..

These are all the reasons why I didn't post in this thread.

The Brick of Doom style non-heatsinks are such bad form. So there, that's a reason.

Sorry dude, that's all I got.

It looks like people are saying RAM training gets stuck failing more often than typical, even at 2133 etc, and ASRock is recommending CMOS clears. This could also be responsible for some of the unknown-cause failures in those reviews. I had something possibly similar happen on my ASRock AB350 Gaming-ITX/ac once; pushing RAM settings way too far just for the hell of it, it somehow lost its ability to POST at anything over 2133 despite having been working great at 3066 a couple boots back. A CMOS clear fixed it right up. *If* it's a similar problem, it's probably no big worry.

To talk you out of it, I'd need to know what you want to use it for. In the absence of any use-case mismatch or already having a system that does what you want, that does look like a pretty good buy.

The specific board is not on the cheap end. This is one of the best Asrock boards. I would be pretty careful about the memory.

In my experience, you can improve system stability by tuning all the latencies and timings in the AGESA 1.0.0.6 bios to optimal values based on XMP. The people most people have is that the process is not as "plug and play" as they have learned to expect, at least for non-JEDEC (ie 2667+) frequencies.

Best I can come up with is "it's not saving you money if you weren't planning to get a new system soon."

Other than that, if the specs are good and the price is good and you're looking at getting a new system anyway... why not?

You may want to check Microcenter to see if they have similar deals. They do a lot of nice CPU/mobo bundles. Back in the AM3+ days I basically got a free mobo with my FX-8350.

Man, I would jump on that 7800X + X299 combo even though it's $200 more than the Ryzen...

Too bad I don't need to upgrade yet (de-lidded 4790K @ 4.6 GHz).

/sigh... Like going to a crack house hoping to get clean :P

You know, the cost of RAM is enough to make me shy away from this deal obviously not the deals fault... but to get 16GB of RAM running at the desired 3200 is insane. Cheapest kit is $150 and I'd have to make sure it is compatible and a decent latency/quality.

If only I could just use my 16GB of DDR3 :P

This.

A major factor keeping me on my trusty FX-8350 is the fact that anything newer will require all new RAM, and I'd want 32 GB for anything that replaces my primary rig.

(I *am* putting together a secondary gaming box... literally my first Intel desktop in over 2 decades. And yes, paying for 16 GB of DDR4 was painful.)

Yeah, realistically I wanted 32GB. I didn't think it was a need, but when I've just been playing certain games my system RAM usage has peaked 12GB. I plan to start doing a lot more with my system, to include a YouTube type channel, streaming, video editing, ect. Soooooooo, 16GB could get used quite quick.

I figured $100 for 16GB is fair considering I believe I paid $110 for my 16GB DDR3 1600 Vengeance back in 2011. Hard to pay near $200 for decent 3200 kit that is also 16GB. Perhaps I am out of touch but RAM should never be close to the same cost as the CPU!

I muck around with VMs semi-regularly. Depending on what you're running in the VMs, that can chew through 16 GB in a hurry, hence my 32 GB requirement.

I think my last 2-3 builds have had the RAM costing close to (if not more than) the CPU. But then, given my use case I tend to value RAM size over raw CPU horsepower, and I also tend to buy ECC RAM if the system supports it. So it does not seem at all odd to me to spend a lot on the RAM.

True... I haven't really dabbled in VMs in a long time due to my lack of CPU power (i5-2500k). Not that I couldn't run them, I just wouldn't on a regular basis and would only be used for environment/OS testing. That would be another good reason for me to keep 32GB as part of my next build. I keep telling myself I can get another year out of this and wait for Ryzen 2, hoping its a perfectly refined version with good clock bumps as well as RAM comparability improving drastically.

ECC support not being common even with Ryzen because of motherboards was sort of a let down. I was willing to pay the premium for the ECC on my rig knowing I'd take a small hit in performance for stability. That sort of went out the window thanks to most boards I liked not being available with ECC support.

If I am seeing this correctly, the ASRock board in that deal actually supports ECC and Non-ECC up to 2933 for Ryzen and 7th Gen APUs...............?

I can understand Welch's opinion, ram was much more affordable in the last couple years. Then we had the never ending rise that started in the 4th quarter of last year.

My brother purchased this for 130-135.

Yeah, the ECC issue with Ryzen has been kind of screwy. It's not officially supported by AMD, but the silicon for it is there in the IMC, the extra memory bus signals are part of the AM4 socket spec, and it "should work" if the motherboard includes the extra traces and the BIOS enables it. It's like a weird, half-hearted/half-assed attempt at product segmentation. WTF, AMD?

I guess maybe they wanted to let enthusiasts use it unofficially, while encouraging power/enterprise users with deeper pockets to shell out for Threadripper or Epyc?

And you thought it was a good idea to come to it first!

Best I got for you is that 12nm Zen is due in Feb 2018. Maybe there will be some minor fixes, optimizations, and IMC improvements in the die shrink, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a little bit of each given Zen was a gen 1 design.

This morning, I couldn't even talk myself out of buying a high-end Z270 board on sale; I'm not sure why you expect us to be able to talk you out of it. :P

Seriously, DDR4 is extremely marked-up right now. Getting a 2x4 GB 2000MHz kit is going to cost me $125. I could have gotten 16 GB of DDR3, for that price, 2 years ago.

I cheaped out and 'only' got 32GB of DDR4 for an X99 build about a year ago with the idea that I'd upgrade when the process was more mature and use the old memory for something else, but now I'm wondering if I should have just taken the hit and bought it all upfront since the price has roughly doubled. DRAM prices have been steadily going up for three or four years now.

Yup. I've probably got at least 48 GB of DDR2 and DDR3 sitting around unused (bought when memory was cheap and/or pulled from systems that have been retired), but it's useless for building anything modern. Pretty sure I could build at least one each of a Socket AM2+ and Socket AM3+ system just from spare parts. OK, I might need to buy a PSU or two...
