Being bored I was playing around with pcpartpicker.com and came up with this build:

What do you guys think, priced about right? I'm thinking that a build around this price should have a quad core CPU, 16Gb of memory, and an SSD and HDD. Correct?

Hate to come in with all negatives-BUT-That green SSD is absolute rubbish and PSU choice is not much better.
Try Crucial BX300 or even MX300.
PSU IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART ON ANY BUILD (Not the place you cut corners the most)
Corsair sells some great PSU's-BUT NOT their cheapies (Trick question-How many quality components can you get in a $25 PSU?)
Recommend the Seasonic in the system guide...............................

I also came to mention the WD Green SSD,, and ask why not for a few dollars more, an MX300 or 850 EVO? I suppose the BX300 is alright if you gotta save every dollar.

My view on "BUILD" is it needs to be balanced and some research done to obtain a good quality/value within budget.

See your revision gets you a much better boot drive(cheaper) and a PSU that'll probably last a couple of builds............

People do tend to ask me for advice every now and then. Although lately I'm been pointing them to good refurbished prebuilts.

Anyway, it is kind of a waste of time if there is no budget and intended usage. OP since you have posted these random builds so often, I suggest you should title your threads better. Since you want to gather opinions to prepare for when friends/families ask you the question (I field questions like that myself every now and then), I suggest you name your build threads like "Midrange home use non-gaming build with the occasional Photoshop". That should make your threads more focused and people can more easily comment on things with the proper context.

Doing research on individual components before posting should provide many hours cure for boredom.....................
Just imagine if you'd recommended that green drive to a friend-
Planar TLC and ram-less,it don't get much lower than that.................

Well thank you for mentioning that to me. I think I would stick with MLC SSDs since TLC hasn't out long enough to be well tested.

That is damn close to what I'm running now- decisions that I made differently, for non-critical discussion:

I went with the H115i. I can't say that it's better or worse, really, but if the enclosure supports a 280mm radiator, why not, right? It's not significantly more expensive, and when you crank that 8700k's six cores, getting rid of heat as quickly as possible is useful for sustained loads.

I also went with an ASRock motherboard this time- and that's after having used ASUS, in part due to your (JAE) insistence. Not really a big deal as the motherboard doesn't do a whole lot these days, though I will say that I wish the board I picked up, the Killer SLI/ac, had more fan headers and USB ports. But I'll get by. When I purchased, the ASUS boards had some pretty horrific reviews on Newegg too for some reason.

On RAM, I reused a 2x16GB DDR4-3000C15 kit that I'd picked up for less than 2x8GB kits of the same stuff go for today, and if I had to buy more RAM today, I'd probably go with something like this G.Skill 2x8GB DDR4-3000C15 kit. Especially for an Intel build, as they're not as nearly as sensitive as Ryzen builds have been and you really just need to get in the ballpark in terms of bandwidth and latency.

For the SSD, I understand getting something large enough and fast, but man the M.2 NVMe prices hurt over the already inflated SATA drive prices. I did pick up a 256GB WB Black M.2 NVMe, and while it's not Samsung 960 Pro fast, you'll be hard pressed to notice the difference between a cabled drive and NVMe for system usage, let alone the difference between two NVMe drives.

I also picked up a 3TB Toshiba 7200RPM spinner for mass storage, which is where my downloads for OS go and where game managers default to, and I can't say anything bad about it. Everything moderately important gets backed up to an external 4TB drive, and anything really important is also copied to a cloud service.

Overall, fairly painless. My GPU is an MSI 1080Ti Seahawk, which is the Corsair AIO version that I picked up on a TR Shortbread tip for base 1080Ti MSRP, and I love it. Dead silent under heavy load while running at ~2050MHz solid on the core and with a significant VRAM overclock.

Oh, and I went with the white windowed R5 because I wanted something white (got a bug up my arse) and wanted to be able to put the 280mm rad in the 140mm positions closest to the front, and put the GPU rad on the single rear fan position. I've removed the external bay cage and the middle drive cage, leaving the bottom cage for three 3.5" spinners, with one SSD on back of the motherboard plate.

System is quiet under load, and I was able to get all white lighting inside, which is also nice. Maybe I'll take a picture!
