Looking for new TR System Guide

Tue Dec 11, 2018 9:32 am

The current System Guide is now over 6 months old. In PC hardware terms, that's about 11 years. My current PC, which was built a fairly long time ago based roughly on a TR system guide configuration, needs to be replaced. Can anyone confirm if there's a new System Guide in the works? If so, when will it be posted? Very much looking forward to it, and thanks to everyone who contributes to it.

Use the product reviews and make your own system. Takes a few hours.

I also lament the missing System Guide for the holiday upgrade cycle. What do you want to do with your new PC? Are you replacing your monitor, or what is the native resolution of the display that you want to re-use? Are there any other components that you want to re-use? Finally—What is the total budget for this project?

I do miss the more regular System Guides. Maybe someone who frequents SBA could do a makeshift Gerbil version...
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. Tis a silly place.

Waiting for Zen 2/Ryzen 3.

That's when things will get interesting, especially since Cannon Lake will be another 14 nm part.

You? or TR? If the latter, that's likely wrong.

I have no interest in building a system right now, but I like reading them and hope they'll be back before the end of the year.

Ryzen-based Zen2 will not be hitting retail/etailer shelves until late Q1 2019 into beginning of Q2 2019. I doubt it'll change the enthusiast landscape by that much either. Zen2-based Epyc and Threadripper are going to be much more interesting.

TR. We already know where Coffee-Lake Refresh stands - fast, hot, and expensive, and Cannon Lake will likely be the same deal, only moreso. What will be worth seeing in 1H19 is whether Zen 2 redefines AMD's absolute performance position, and if so, where and at what cost. Their APUs being 8-core parts next gen will probably be revolutionary in the budget and midrange space no matter if Zen 2's IPC improvements pan out.

Given Intel and Nvidia's impending bankruptcies within the next month prior to CES, it's prudent for TR to hold off on recommendations. This lets AMD launch its full 7nm product lineup with widespread availability at CES so the next guide can be all-AMD.

I just took advantage of the 1950x sale to replace my living room computer. Why would I do that? I honestly have no answer for that question other than "because I could." Gonna toss a couple of Vega 56 cards I have from the mining craze.

I'm as surprised to have an all AMD machine as... I don't know, insert surprised meme here. My main rig is still intel/nvidia, 7900x and Titan Pascal, but I guess you could make the argument that in some situations the TR system is faster.

Every time I look at that massive case (still configuring it) it makes me laugh, such a silly thing to do.

If you can wait for the Ryzen 2 3000 series to come out next month or so. If you can't wait try looking at Youtube videos, PCPartPicker.com and the TR guide for general direction and info. Look for deals at any MicroCenter or Frys Electronics near you also. Using reviews on Newegg and Amazon helps with product quality investigation.

It's a bit difficult to make recommendations without knowing what you intend to do with the PC and how much you are wanting to spend on it.

I too miss the system guide.

I'd also like to see a laptop build guide, but I'm kind of nuts about this stuff.

Oh, I'm willing to wait for the laptop form factor 2080 TI to become available in Q1, so you all can have Christmas off. This time.

Click-bait much? AMD to go bankrupt by 2020.

I love the TR system guide, even if I am not going to actively be building that cycle. But they have gotten a bit stale, you can pretty much guess how they rank components based off of their reviews. I just wish they'd break in to the SFF. They once did a 'dorm-box' that was awesome!

There was a time a few years ago when there were a lot of weird builds, like SFF and such. It’s be nice to see those again since there isn’t me out there in the way of guidance on these builds.

What would be equally interesting is to have maybe a couple times a year a summary of hardware, with a category for best performance, best value, and least-expensive-but-still-reliable. Not just for desktop hardware but for laptops, too. It takes a ton of research to find which laptops have screens with acceptable color accuracy, and THEN even more time to try and find which ones of those have good keyboards, and so on down the spec list. Laptop review websites are so terribly sponsored that it’s tough to glean any unbiased and useful info from anywhere.

It's pretty straightforward, and already public knowledge, but here's a reminder. The system guides have historically been sponsored by NewEgg, even though what was put in them was 100% up to the TR staff. This was the last one of that nature. No sponsorship = fewer updates. It's just that simple.

FWIW, I'm in the same boat as the rest of you, I'd love to have an updated one to share with the growing number of coworkers and their kids that are suddenly becoming interested in PC gaming/building.

Well, there wasn't exactly fanfare, it was just a matter of not mentioning the sponsorship anymore after it was over.

If TR would invest half a day in writing an updated System Guide every three or four months, then each of us wouldn't have to spend that time every time someone asks the question. We could simply point to the article and make a few comments.
