Re: Best RAM for my build

Welcome to TR!
What CPU? I would consider 3000mhz almost a minimum in today's age. You can run it at that speed without overclocking the rest of the system.

Ryzen 5 3600 and Core i5 9400 are more up to the task of feeding 2080Ti at 1440. Just get a decent pair 8GiB of DDR4-3000/3200 DIMMs and are you golden. Spending more on faster memory yields diminishing returns unless you intend on doing hard-core overclocking. Fortunately, DDR4 prices have finally fallen down to a historical low.

FYI, my brother's 8700K@stock plus DDR4-3200 units have no trouble driving his 2080Ti. The Ryzen 5 3600 and Core i5 9400 aren't that far behind the 8700K.

Ivy Bridge 3570K, 2x4GiB of G.Skill RIPSAW DDR3-1600, Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H, Corsair CX-750M V2, and PC-7B

Re: Best RAM for my build

Hey guys,
I'm putting together a new PC build around the new Nvidia 2080 Ti. Obviously a lot of money went into the GPU, but I want to make sure all other components are up to spec, to get the best results out of it. The intended use is a high-end gaming pc, running my monitor's 2560×1440 resolution at up to 144Hz.
I have some questions regarding RAM, and its speed. The kit recommended to me by the shop is included in the parts list below and has 2400MHz. However, I've been told I could benefit from a higher frequency RAM, such as 2666MHZ or even 3000+. Furthermore, I am not looking to overclock anything, hence the non-K CPU (I feel like I lack the knowledge required to mess with such stuff).

$140 2x16 GiB PC4-28800 G.Skill F4-3600C19S-16GVRB (DDR4-3600, 19-20-20-40, 1.35V)
$136 2x16 GiB PC4-25600 Crucial BLS16G4D32AESE (DDR4-3200, 16-18-18-?, 1.35V) <- Good RAM for your build

At minimum something like this. Even absent the resolution and refresh rate, 3200C16 is dirt cheap in a build where a 2080 Ti is on the table, and is worth every penny. Past 3200C16 it gets less clear.

With a 1440p144 monitor and a 2080 Ti, you could easily be very CPU-bound depending on the games you're playing and settings you're using. What's your actual framerate goal? If it's true 144 (for ULMB for instance), RAM at more like 3600 could be good, and I would highly recommend a K-variant CPU (probably 9700K) for the stock clock bump (larger power budget) even if you don't plan on overclocking. If seeing 100 fps often would be alright, a 2080 Ti for 1440p is probably very overkill, but the CPU-side requirements (including RAM) are a lot more relaxed.
