i5-4590 sufficient?

Wed Jul 01, 2020 1:45 am

Hey all. I'm looking at upgrading from GTX 970 SLI to a RTX 2070 Super. I'm running a i5-4590 in this system currently. Do you all think the CPU would become a critical bottle neck after this upgrade? Mostly gaming at 1080p while streaming and 1440p ultrawide when I'm not streaming.

Core i5-4590 is pretty long in the tooth these days, but at 1440p resolution, your graphics card is the bigger bottleneck.

I'm trying to wait until the 4th quarter of this year to upgrade my graphics card. We'll be getting new GPU generations from both suppliers. AMD will offer us their first ray-tracing GPUs (Navi 2x) and NVidia will offer us their first GPUs built on a modern EUV fabrication process (Ampere). Both should offer significant improvements over currently-available GPUs and drive down the high prices that NVidia has demanded for their current GeForce RTX20x0 (Turing) GPUs.

On the CPU front, AMD's current Ryzen 3000 series (Zen2 Matisse) processors are excellent. I wouldn't feel bad about building a new gaming PC on a B550 or X570 motherboard today. Ryzen 9 3900XT's 24 threads would make short work of your video streaming. However, Ryzen 4000 (Zen3 Vermeer) CPUs are also due at the end of this year and should offer a slight performance boost.

The other drawback to building right now is that there are significant shortages of motherboards, power supplies, etc., and some vendors have jacked their prices up by large margins.

I'll second JAE's recommendations. If you can soldier on until late year the entire GPU and CPU market will change with new product launches. That should let you either get a 2070 Super for cheaper than you can today or get a next gen card from either NVidia or AMD for similar money to the current 2070 Super pricing.

A 4590 will bottleneck a high graphics card, but as JAE said that's a pretty old CPU at this point. Even something inexpensive like an R3 3300X will run rings around it.

Quick take: If you want a quick kick for your gaming but aren't planning to start running high resolutions, buy the new GPU now and keep using the CPU you've got. If you're not in a hurry or you want to start gaming at high resolutions, hang on a little longer and see what it would take to rebuild the entire system once the next round of hardware releases is available to compare.

Thank you very much for the input guys. I've decided I'll buy the 2070 super. I do want a "quick fix" now and the inflated prices of the RTX supers are not an issue for me. If the 4590 holds up okay, I'll delay a new system build until later this year based on your recommendations.

Got the 2070 Super installed and I'm very satisfied. The rest of the system is holding up fine. We'll see how things look at the end of the year. Thanks again for the advice.
