build info

Sat Aug 08, 2020 10:33 am

10 years ago i used the system builder info on here to build my first and only computer. it ha served me well. i spent 3200 and up until recently has served my needs. i find that i need to upgrade and am disappointed that updated guides no longer exist. im looking to build another one using my current cosmos case. its a big one so im sure it will all fit. everything else though will have to go.
my current system is a i7 [email protected] 12GB ram and a radeon 5800 GPU
id like to upgrade to a i9. one of the biggest concerns i have is getting correct info or non bias info.
currently im looking at a core i9-10900x, g.skill trident rgb 32g ddr4, and a corsair rmx RM850x 80 plus gold. Im having trouble choosing a mother board and a video card.
id like to have the main drive be the ones that go into the pic slots to make it as fast as possible and a GPU thats 5-800$
my main goal here is to play 2 games at once and the same game with 2 instances on 2 screens. Specifically world of tanks and EVE, star citizen

im also at a loss for screens. id llike to get 2 screens. currently i have 2 HP 2711x screens. im looking at getting either 2 ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q 27" or a curved xtra wide main screen and a ROG swift Second. I don't know a lot about the curved screens. to they offer the same quality or would i be better just getting to ROG swift screens?

any help or guidance to guides is much appreciated.

If you've waited this long, would you wait another two or three months? We're due to get Zen3 "Vermeer" desktop CPUs (e.g.: Ryzen 9 4900X) and Navi 2x GPUs from AMD and Ampere GPUs from NVidia before the end of the year. Zen3 in October will be an incremental improvement over the already very good Zen2 "Matisse" CPUs, but the hope is that Navi 2x will be a game changer when it arrives in November. Even if AMD's first GPU with hardware ray-tracing doesn't best NVidia's top-of-the-line Ampere due in September, it is expected to provide competition to get NVidia to cut their painfully-high GPU prices.

For gaming monitors, the sweet spot is still at 2560x1440, especially if you aren't planning to spend more than $1400 on a graphics card. You definitely want 100+ Hz refresh and FreeSync/VESA-standard variable refresh rate with LFC. I'm very happy with the Dell S3220DGF. The 27" version is the S2721DGF. On AMD's list of monitors, any with the "FreeSync Premium" label include 120+ Hz refresh and LFC. "FreeSync Premium Pro" adds support for HDR. Since NVidia finally quit blocking VESA-standard variable refresh in their drivers in January of 2019, you want a FreeSync Premium monitor even for use with an NVidia GPU.

P.S.: Use PCPartpicker to help make your build list, but check at B&H, Newegg and Amazon yourself - pcpp doesn't always have the latest pricing or availability. You can see from my wishlist how pricing for NVidia's graphics cards has gotten completely out of hand:

May I ask why you were looking at Intel in the OP? If you are simply not familiar with what AMD had been up to the past few years in making so much noise (their stock are at an all time high and per share price actually is higher than Intel), it is probably time to read up on the Ryzen's.

And luckily, if you want to keep yourself updated on what AMD has to offer, you needn't look further than ... The Tech Report!

Thanks for the reply. No I have not really been keeping up.
It used to be AMD was the little guy that couldn’t quite keep up. I’m sure my impressions are wrong it’s been 10 years since I was into it.
My current rig is fading fast so I’m looking for a holdover that’s around 1k suggestions are great fully appreciated

If you're looking for something that you could order today for ≈$1000, how about these parts?
PCPartPicker Part List
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-core 16-thread CPU with Wraith Prism cooler ($283½ @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Asus PRIME X570-P ATX AM4 Motherboard ($150 @ B&H)
Memory: G.Skill Aegis 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory ($103 @ Newegg)
Storage: ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME SSD ($140 @ Adorama)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 8 GB WINDFORCE 2X Video Card ($400 @ Newegg)
Total: $1076.51

Are you near a Micro Center store? They offer attractive in-store CPU+motherboard bundles.

If your needs change later, you could drop a 16-core 32-thread Ryzen 9 CPU into that motherboard without a problem.

The power supply that you have now might be sufficient for starters.

Unfortunately, PSUs are currently in short supply and their prices have doubled or tripled since the pandemic hit. The good news is that Ryzen 3000-series processors are built on TSMC's 7 nm process node, so they use less than half as much power as similarly-performing CPUs from Intel's 14 nm process do. You could easily power the system listed above with a quality 600-watt power supply. Here's a list of PSUs to consider:
https://pcpartpicker.com/products/power ... ice&page=1

If they were available at their usual $100-$140 price during frequent Newegg deals, I would choose a SeaSonic Focus PX or Prime PX platinum unit in the 650 to 750 watt range, but a GX or SGX gold unit is still fine.
SeaSonic Focus GX-750:
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/64cMnQ ... -ssr-750fx
SeaSonic Focus PX-650:
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/yc38TW ... -ssr-650px
Silverstone Strider Platinum 650:
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/psL7YJ ... ly-st65fpt

If we need to trim some cost out of the budget, the same components would work on a cheaper motherboard with the B550 chipset (with fewer PCIe lanes) or the B450 chipset (with only PCIe 3.0 vs. 4.0 in the B550 and X570). However, both the SSD and the NVidia graphics card that I picked are PCIe 3.0 devices, anyway.

Is that the HD 58xx that you were referring to? In that case that is also a 10 year old GPU that definitely is falling behind with modern games. Perhaps you could just get a new card to hold you over, but then Ampere is also coming. How painful is it? Is the rig literally dying now?

JAE's build above is definitely an "if you have to build something now, this is what you will get". Stay around that and research now on good monitor upgrades. The world has changed and it's not just "not TN" anymore. There is VRR, LFC, HDR and all that.

OTOH, since this is so close to Zen3 I wonder if you may "get by" with an R5 (<$200) and a B550/X570 board, and then upgrade when Zen3 (go for the $300-500 range) is out. Anyway, today's bang for buck is either the R5 3600X or the R7 3700X.

If you're talking about a cheap CPU to tide the OP over until Zen3, even an R3 3100 (IF you can find it in stock...) or a Zen+ chip like a 2600 would be much more capable than the old 960 and cheaper than a 3600.

I appreciate all the info on here you guys are great.
I’ve decided that I’m going to do the 3700 build try to keep me around 1500
I can’t imagine next year when the new stuff comes out it will be cheap. The run on it would be ridiculous.
When I go big in a year or two I’ll give this system to my brother.

I do have a question about cases
I’ve got this big cosmos case and all my old computer parts
I’ll gut the case and keep the power supply
Is the case still usable?

Sure, the ATX case standard hasn’t changed. Newer cases bring obnoxious programmable RGB LED bling, tempered glass panels, etc aesthetically. Functionally, many new cases have done away with both 3.5” and 5.25” external bays, may include USB3 ports and are more likely to be configured for large radiator installation.

Just a quick double check: what's your current power supply? If it is a good 500+ unit from the reputable brands, then it should be fine. PSU prices are totally out of whack at the moment so you should hold onto your existing one if you can. I imagine since you have used it for 10 years I have confidence in it.

My power supply is a good one 750w I think
I generally don’t buy anything that isn’t solid. Might not be the best but it’s important to me to be reliable
